Post Match thoughts - Manure

It's good to see us getting our "can't beat a team in the top six" hoodoo off our backs so early in the season.

And beating Villa and Utd was nice too.

"A host of European Cup-winning former players from both sides were to be seen in the directors’ box at Anfield, but the man who signed the most autographs before the game was James Corden, he of Gavin and Stacey fame. The actor was a guest of Liverpool chairman Tom Werner."

Oi! Werner! NO!!

Well well well, dare we believe?

3 games in, 3 wins when we weren't at our best, 3 superb defensive displays from the team as a unit, defeat of Utd for the 1st time for a Rodgers team and top of the table to boot.

We have a relatively easy run of fixtures until Nov 2nd when we are away to Arsenal and could have 7, 8 or even 9 wins out of 9 by then. (Can I dream for the next 2 weeks at least?)

Swansea away next is massive now, beat them and we really put the fear in every team we play.

As for the Utd game itself

Ming 7 - His best game so far, came from crosses, put his name on it, solid hands for comfortable shots and strong fists for Nani's finger breaker.

GlenJo 7 - A non entity going forward again for me but he was faultless at the back and his 'fuck you' tackle on Evra was a joy to behold. Hopefully he isn't out for more than 10 days as I really believe if we kept everyone fit we are in for a superb season.

Skrtel 8 - Played like the Skrtel of 2 seasons ago which is no mean effort cnosdiering he was up against the speed of Wellback and skill of RVP. Our best defender and considering it was his first game of the season a close 2nd for MOTM.

Agger 7 - Superb....... up until he did his usually trick of losing his man in a dangerous area to give the opposition a chance. It was Benteke last week and RVP this week. Apart from that moment where he switched off he was excellant and set up the all imortant goal which gave us a platform to defend from.

Jose 7 - I really don't get why any Liverpool fan would not love him as we did Riise. For some of his obvious faults (to many touchs, positions, and passing at times) he is a very good left back and gives our left side a real threat. He was rarely beaten today and got between his man and the ball on numerous occasions. The fact he held off Valencia on more than 1 occasion when Valencia had been brushing others aside with ease showed the incredible strength he has on the ball. Offered an outlook to the conjected midfield and pressured attackers with their back to goal on countless occasions.

Lucas - 6 As you would expect against Utd, he worked hard never stopped running, kept it simple with the ball at his feet and made some good tackles. The bad news is he offered no rest bite to our defence in the last 30 mins when they were screaming for an outlet to hold onto the ball and this is when you need him (and gerrard the most to show the composure you expect from your CM's) His clumsy needless foul on Cleverly could easily have led to a heartbreaking equaliser and he needs to pull his socks up pronto if he wants to stay in the side.

Henderson - 7 If everyone had his engine I would nail us on for the title now. His pressing and chasing is 2nd to none and makes its very difficult for his opponent to make a dangerous pass. He was all over the pitch and made Carrick and Cleverly look distinctly average. Fastly becoming my favourite CM.

Gerrard - 8 Captain fantastic. Defensively he read the game as good as anyone and always seems to know where to run to to cut out the dangerous ball or track the free man. I reckon his legs will be in bits this morning as he sprinted back to cover our back 4 over a dozen times. Made some great tackles and always showed for the ball even at the end when his legs were gone.

Aspas - 5 Worked extremely hard but we all knew we would get that before he arrived. I still think we have a real player on our hands but he needs to bulk up badly and a goal wil do his confidence the world of good. I think the occasion got to him al ittle and his want to impress boiled over into some needless rash clumsy tackles. I expect him to be dropped for Moses.

Coutinho - 6 ran for the whole game til his sub which was good to see as he normally dies around the 60 min mark. Tried some extravagent balls where they weren't needed but always showed for the ball and stood up to the physical challenges thrown at him. I think its easy to forget how hard it is to do what he does on the ball.

Sturridge - 9 An incredibly mature performance from someone with many doubters before he arrived. I said when we were interesting that he could be a great signing but Christ nobody could have predicted he would be this good. On current form he is the best striker in the league and overshadowed RVP easily. Not only did he get a goal, he constantly showed for the ball, never hit even a 70/30 ball to a team mate when under pressure but instead, rode the tackle, held the ball, gave his team a break and found a teammate in space. As good a CF display as you will ever see. The fact he was defending on his own 18 yard line in stoppage time says it all. LFC legend already for me.

Sterling - 7 Didn't back down from Valencia even after getting dumped on his ass (who wouldn't Valencia is a beast) tracked the Utd right brilliantly and almost capped his cameo with a superb goal.

Alberto - Wasn't on long enough.

Rodgers - 9 What can you say, he's learnt from the mistakes of alst year where we were to open and ripped apart to often on the counter. Made the correct changes at the right times. 4 games 4 wins 3 clean sheets and some sexy football. And all with no Suarez.

Top of the F*cking league boys come on.

3 down 35 wins to go.

I have to say, it does seems like we're approaching each league game like its a cup final.
We're not playing as well as we should be but we're grinding out the results.

This international break couldn't have come at a better time. Looking at our usual starters, most of them won't be leaving.
Johnson (injured), Enrique, Touré, Lucas, Henderson, Coutinho, Aspas will all stay behind and prepare for the up coming league fixture.
I really hope Sturridge drops out as well.

Generous for Sterling
Valencia was causing all sorts of problems and I thought we needed Sterling on to at least have someone run with him which is what he did from the minute he came on. He also gave us an out ball on a number of occasions when our midfield had disappeared.
Perhaps a bit generous but I thought he did exactly what was asked of him.

Did not manage to watch the Match. No time for moaning Minnies. We won against our biggest rival. Yes. Yes. Yes. YWNA. Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Thoughts:

- Best seat I've ever had at a game. Jamo would have been proud of me.
- Got a reading to do at this wedding today and I've lost my voice. Ha.
- Cheers to Jon, Pete, Pete's young girlfriend, The Irish lads wearing green just in case anyone forgot, and mostly Woland for being a super sound cunt for getting me ticket with directions print ed out for it. Straight outta Ikea.
- But mostly cheers to Pete's parents for driving like mentalists to get me back to my car in time. Legends.
- Oh, and fuck what a win. Henderson, Lucas, Sturridge and Skrtel immense.
- Sterling needs to hit the fucking gym.
- Later.

Yes, it's a very encouraging start. Even though we were a bit scrappy yesterday, there were still some really good passing movements. They're signs that we can really progress.

I don't think that's over-generous. The lad did what we needed him to do at that stage.

My thoughts are that this league is gonna be tight this year.

Man U are shit. They're losing RvP away from coming 7th
Arsenal are 2 injuries away from coming 7th
Despite having 956 players Spurs have lost Bale and are worse than last year
Maureen has got Chelski playing anti football again
Man City look gash as the minute.

It's there for the taking innit.

Also, I'm not nearly as worried about the defence following Skrtel's performance and the fact we're buying these other kids.
Lucas had a dead good game.
If anyone claims that Gerrard isn't the best player we've ever had just watch that first twenty odd minutes again where everyone else on the pitch looked like a kid and he looked like a superhero.
We have been complete shit in the second half of all games this season. As Fleming said, Once is happenstance. Twice is coincidence. Three times, it's enemy action.... so what gives? Needs sorting.
Coutinho has been crap in his two biggest games since signing... Chelsea and Man U. Seriously, if he's a flat track bully, the kind of player that destroys small teams but won't get given the time on the ball against the big teams, drop him. Bring him on after an hour when everyone else is knackered.
Sturridge is fucking brilliant. Not just the goal.. in the second half when we couldn't keep the ball the only player in the team that seemed to know what he was doing was Sturridge... he needed his Countinho, Aspas, Sterling, whoever was on to get with the program, I'm sure they will.

Overall.. was a weird game, a strange performance... From 45 to 70 mins I was crapping myself becuase Manure had all the ball... but after a while it became all fart and no arse. They never looked like scoring or even creating much. So I guess BR got it just right.

Interesting post as per. A couple of thoughts in response:

1. I absolutely claim Stevie isn't the greatest player we've ever had. The true holder of that title, the King, stood out just as much but did so in a tremendous side which was sweeping all before it. Stevie's close, though, and definitely plays in CM for the All-Time XI alongside Souey. What a feckin nightmare that combo would have been to play against.

2. For years we were a side which often beat the top teams but lost it against lesser opposition. Last season we seemed to flip that on its head. Truth is we need to get the two things in balance and beat ALL these teams. Coutinho is a special talent IMO and I've no doubt he'll help us do that.

The last time we won the league, the first three games read win, draw, draw.
Drooling right now.
Suarez coming back in, and hopefully Moses doing the business will make us better and better.
Fortunately we don't have a mental manager who thinks we'd be better without Gerrard and Suarez due to some stupid stats.

Yeah I'm old enough to remember seeing that too...and I know I'm a hyperbolist (new word that) but when he made that tackle and got up and turned round yesterday, that sealed it. 33 years old and still fucking awesome. It was 13 seasons ago that he twatted that screamer in against them when we won 3-0.

13 seasons ago! He was the boss then and he's still the boss now. It's just mental.

I appreciate the subjective nature of my claim and will make no further argument!
