post match - Sunderland

Also - kudos to Sunderland for putting up a strong resistance in the first half and a good fight in the second. Their remaining fixtures list is pretty brutal, with games against Spurs, Everton, Chelsea and both Manchester sides yet to come. Here's wishing them good luck and at least a draw in each of these games.

Arsenal in 01/02 to win the league. I think.

I know their 14 game run is the longest in PL history, but it might have extended a game into the next season. Wikipedia says it finished in August 02 anyways.
Ah yeah cheers remember that now.
Would be an astounding achievement.
It would be the cruelest blow in the history of sport if City still won it after doing that.

I'm not happy with how that game ended. Pretty pissed off at some of the players tbh.
Don't think Brendan is particularly happy with what he saw either.
If we turn up like that against Spurs our title bid is well and truly over.

I don't buy the "a win is a win" rhetoric.

What is it then? It's not played on paper. I'm faaaaaaaiiiiirly sure City and Chelsea will have scraped one or two on the way to where they end up.

Anyway, I thought our defence was super duper when Daniel Agger plays? That's four soft goals in two games against two relatively poor teams.

It was nervy watching. Spurs will be a different game altogether especially if they play their normal high line

It could have easily ended like that West Brom game, when we were cruising. Obviously you can't win every game convincingly but giving Sunderland that much possession and chances towards the end to me is fucking awful.

I take it that you're blaming Agger for their goal. Good for you.

Texted my Scum supporting brother during the game:

"Just noticed that your best defenders are playing for Sunderland, what went wrong?"

Paraphrasing...

"I don't like our chances against Spurs after that..."

"I don't buy that a win is a win..."

WTF is wrong with some of you?!?!?!?!?!?!

It's like you're determined to NOT enjoy what we're doing here... We fucking won a squeaky-bum game that this time last year, we'd have drawn or lost. FFS. We're second, with 7 games left, and at this time of year, winning IS all that matters. Cheer the fuck up, for Christ's sake.

Seven more of them, and we're champions

Well said.

That game was heart attack material but we won, thank fuck and good result, onwards and upwards.

If I recall correctly from the last time we were in the title race at this stage of the season, Man U managed to win a couple of matches that they didn't deserve to, in the run in and consequently won the title.
We should have been out of sight but instead had a nervy last twenty minutes, We still deserved the points.
No matter how convincing the title winners eventually are, they will have endured more than one nervy win in a season.
That is how champions are made. That is what champions are made of.
We are going to smash spurs.

It was Sunderland, third worst team in the league at HOME and we almost threw away a 2-0 lead when we should have been up by four at least.

To clarify, I'm not disappointed with the win, I'm a bit frustrated about how we played during the 2nd half and the fact that our title bid could have been ended by a team that most likely be playing in the Championship next season.

Also, why did most of the players look knackered in the 2nd half?

Missed the game and forgot to record it (I was playing my first game back after knee surgery). Can someone give a quick synopsis of the game rather than the moaning at posters not enjoying the win (otherwise I have to read the match thread)?

Ta.

True but I think they don't go100 kmh for the first 60 minutes?
The thing is, we didn't do that either imo.
Anyway, I can't be arsed with arguing about this anymore.
Just hope we do a lot better against Spurs.

I think there were two factors that stopped Liverpool recording a more convincing win. One was external, the other internal.

We tend to assume that in English football, referees aim to be fair and don't exhibit bias to one side or the other. I found Kevin Friend's display quite disturbing as he was clearly trying to help Sunderland. All through the game he was denying Liverpool free kicks for blatant fouls by Sunderland players, but when he had the opportunity he gave Sunderland free kicks for trifling offences.

The second factor was the club's own fault for the mindless pre-match watering of the pitch which always works against us rather than the opposition. In the first half, our forwards were constantly slipping. Even when they didn't actually fall over, their ball control was suffering because of the slippery surface.

Sunderland system kept us from playing penetrating through balls, and we were frustrated into passing it in front of their back line on the edge of their box. They sat deep, so we couldn't counter with pace, and we struggled to get close enough to really test their keeper. I hope they haven't shown some of the other bottom-half teams how to limit our clear chances, and frustrate our front line.

I think they do that to prevent injuries.

The explanation I heard was that the heavy watering makes the pitch slicker and faster, helping our passing style of play.

However, if that's correct, all the clubs think that it helps their style of play, because they all seem to deluge their home pitch with water before home games.
