Porto First Leg Post Match Thoughts

Well the correct decision in hindsight would be to go the week of the game. But that’s out the window now so I’ll be spending my birthday with a load of fat cunts who will ditch me at 5pm (US time) and I’ll sit in a bar on my own watching baseball for 5 hours and getting pissed. I’ve done it once before 4 years ago.

The only consolation is that the company pays for it all.
Birthdays are over-rated mate. Only high point is the 'gift' shag. Guess you're missing that then *cough*.

Karius looked more confident lately, but I think he needs someone to explain to him the difference between VVD's head and a football...

  • Liverpool registered the joint-biggest away Champions League knockout win, equalling Bayern Munich's 5-0 win at Sporting Lisbon in February 2009 and Real Madrid's at Schalke in February 2014.
  • This is Porto's heaviest home European defeat and the first time they have conceded more than three goals in a home European match.
  • Liverpool are the first English side to score five goals in an away Champions League knockout match.
Those are actually surprising stats.
I hope we don’t bother trying to break the two-leg all time record and just shut up shop with Salah doing his thing on the counter. Or maybe I do.

The ITV highlights are worth watching just to see Roy Keane squirming while obviously hating having to heap praise on us.

I think Andy Robertson deserves a special mention, complete workhorse. Let's pray we don't see Moreno back in the side this season.

Salah almost has Balon D'Or wrapped up by the end of Feb. All he needs to do is score one or two in the World Cup and he's nailed on for it. Great to see Mane get on the score sheet - i think the flood works will open now. A few have been saying it the past few months - even though he has looked 'off' and a bit reserved, his output was still on a par with last season. Looks like he will now pass that which is great when you think about how much he stood out last year.

How about some ratings? Hmmm? Oh, very well.

That was most enjoyable. Another clean sheet and another devastating display of fast, ruthless counter-attacking football.

Karius (7) Had almost nothing to do. Alert to what little threat there was, and kicked quickly and accurately for the most part.

TAA (7) I know everyone talks about Europe being a "big stage" and all that shit, but TAA has played better teams than this already, and faced better players. He had a slightly tentative start, then remembered that, and played accordingly. Solid, confident and safe, he had the pace and skill to deal with the Porto winger.

Lovren (8) Seems to enjoy having a dominant, alpha-male partner next to him. Won everything in the air and on the ground, and was aggressive throughout.

Virgil (8) A couple of nerve-jangling moments, but largely an oasis of calm authority. Seems to have added some kind of +5 defensive buff (one for the kids there) to the entire defence. Top dog.

Robertson (8) It's great to see a milky-white, gingery Scot playing so well in a Liverpool team. It's been a long time. He isn't perhaps the most silky, easy on the eye, Rolls-Royce player, but who cares. Just like someone who lives or works in the countryside won't buy a BMW X%, but instead knows the Subaru or Mitsubishi will be far better, and get the job done more reliably. He never stops moving, rarely wastes a pass, and doesn't do anything stupid. Class.

Milner (8) Another of Liverpool's more agricultural-looking players and how wonderful it was to watch. Never gave Porto a second to rest, and crashed into tackles all over the pitch. They must have felt like they were in John Carpenter's Halloween; every time they looked up he was there, expressionless, remorseless and killing any chance they had to survive the tie.

Henderson (7) Ran about chucking water over any fires they tried to start. Efficient, simple and alert.

Wijnaldum (7) With Henderson and Milner scaring up possession and shutting down attacks. Wijnaldum joined in happily, shuttling the ball around the pitch and driving play forward. Porto simply could not wrest any control from the three of them.

Salah (9) Another irrepressible display of pace, movement, amazing control and a dead-eyed accuracy. His goal was beautiful and arrogant and perfect.

Firmino (9) Non-stop and all-action. He rarely gives anything less, but what he has added to his game this season is a more consistent end product and goals. Clinical finish.

Mane (10) Wonderful to see him back to his exhilarating best, full of pace, menace and goals. Brilliant.

A little mention to Lovren for that block which deflected a goal bound shot over the bar. It was 0-0 at the time and that could have changed the whole game.
I'm still hopeful he can become Henchoz to VVD's Hyppia.

Some beautiful prose in there

I didn't think Keane was that bad. He's not shy these days of giving credit where it's due, and he's always fairly complimentary towards us when we're at our attacking best. He's certainly alot more bitter about United and Mourinho, Arsenal and Chelsea.

He didn't squirm at all I thought, he was pretty respectful and honest. He might be a miserable fucker and deeply embittered, but he's fairly honest about football and doesn't seem to have much bias about him, he generally says it as it is. And that includes calling United out for being boring and Mourinho for being an utter twat.

Didn't he say earlier in the season that he wouldn't watch us if we were playing in his garden?

Incidentally he's a traitorous cunt!

I just want to say that Salah goal is just a thing of beauty.

It's like a goal from yesteryear. Flicks and touches. Joga Bonita

I've seen nothing like it for years.

Yeah he couldn't handle it.. Had to label us as embarrassing for our lack of trophies in the last 10 years, just so his head didn't explode.

Are you going over dave? I’m going Tuesday/Wednesday

I'm not Pete. I'm going to America in April so I left off Cheltenham again this year. Will take a few days off here and go to pub/bookies for the day.

Hmm Flicks & Tricks. Now where have I heard that recently, hmmm. OH YES! That´s right it was, that dickheads thread I locked out.

Your welcome.
It was my joint favorite goal along with Sadio Mane´s third though.

I think Mane har a very good 2nd half in the weekend. That volley had good direction... and he certainly built on it yesterday. What a game.

That's what I thought, too. You get the feeling that his negative aspect of his critique makes the headlines more than anything else.
