PL Disappointments of the Season

Well, this is the opposite of the Frogfish's PL Team of the Season thread (http://sixcrazyminutes.com/index.php?threads/pl-team-of-the-season.82684/).

I'm having trouble filling out that front line because there are so many letdowns this season. For example, in choosing Depay, Benteke and Hazard, I've had to leave out: Sterling, Ibe and Borini, each a disappointment for different reasons (too little for much much, regressing, all ado about nothing). After his brilliant first season, Sanchez could possibly be classified a disappointment this season given his lowered production. Still, I think he's done better than his teammates Oxlaide-Chamberlain and Walcott.

Can't quite think of a left back right now. Moreno can't be a disappointment because we all know his flaws so didn't quite expect great things from him. For the other CB spot, I'm thinking Joleon Lescott, as he was probably expected to come in and help Villa but that hasn't happened. For CM, I think Jack Grealish could be one for the Villa fans, given the hopes they had for him and how he's self-destructed. Andy Johnson for Sunderland maybe, but I'm not sure they did expect much from him on the pitch.

Not too sure if this is the final team yet - pretty positive there will be some names that come into my mind at some point.

--------------------- Guzan -----------------------
Ivanovic --- ?????? --- Stones --- ????????
---------------------- Matic ------------------------
---------- Shelvey --------- Fabregas ----------
Depay ----------- Benteke ------------ Hazard

Manager: Roberto Martinez or Jose Mourinho

I'd find a way to fit Schneiderlin in there, because after being one of the most sort after defensive midfielders in the league, he's joined United and been completely anonymous.

Only considering players who are meant to be good here or have been raved about, or cost a fuckload

Butland
Ivanovic Kompany Lescott Baines
Schneiderlin Matic
Depay Hazard Sterling
Benteke

When starting this thread, my idea was along the lines of the performance of the player (a) relative to his cost to the club, taking into consideration their budget, and/or (b) the fans' expectations for an existing player, given the performances / promises from the prior season.

So, for example, someone like Borini, though costing only 8m, would've been a bust considering that they'd chased him for 2 seasons, had been rejected once, ended up paying 8m for him, and he's now not even a regular under Allardyce. Hazard and Fabregas are obvious choices on the other hand, not because of the costs, but because they'd just seemed to down tools this season, right after winning the title last season.

Another example is Ibe. Most of us had high hopes of this being the season he emerged and wowed us but we've been let down pretty badly.

Martial , I have no idea what his stats are like but after that performance against us back in sept , everyone thought he'd kick on , has he ? Either way he cost a fuck load

Yaya?

Mitrovic ?

Berahino?

Mignolet ?

Mignolet hasn't been disappointing. He's played to his ability

Sadly

Woah , did lasts nights diouf turns to fox their forward , not once (along with his own feet temporarily) but twice not shown you just how tekkers our keeper is?

I've actually defended mig a few times this season and quite like him

Pato was MOTM in the one game he's played.

I know, but he's been out for like forever (well since January), so he's still ultimately been a huge disappointment in entertainment terms. Brilliant for everyone who hates Chelsea though.

I was shocked when he came on and was pretty damn good. I was expecting him to be massively overweight and just not arsed at all. Bit odd he didn't get any time whatsoever before it.

I wouldn't say he's been a huge disappointment, but I was hoping for a bit more from Shaqiri after all the hype:

3 goals, 5 assists. That's less than a few of our attackers who get a regular shoeing.

I'm surprised it's that flat given the way he celebrates like he's the king of goals.

I've a strong feeling the guy that Klopp didn't want to buy because of his individualistic celebrations was this smug punk:

Sterling makes that team for me. Cost nearly £50M and didn't deliver anything to justifying that kind of outlay.

Van Gaal, Mourinho, Martinez and alas, Rodgers make up the managerial team of disappointments with Wenger arguably not far behind. The league was Arsenal's to win this season and yet they found a way to settle for top-4 yet again.

Schneiderlind shouldnt be there, he's been quite good for Utd and they've been much better with him in the team.

Schweinsteiger makes the list.

Hate to say it but I reckon Martial, despite the fee, has been a very good signing for them. Whether playing up front or on the left, he's often been the most effective attacking threat - sometimes the only one - in not a very good side, and at his age he should have a lot of improvement left in him yet.

I have to agree with JJ, unfortunately. Martial is going to be a star for them I think. True, he cost them a shitload for a 20-year-old, but I think there's potential for him to be the next Rooney / Ronaldo for them.

Interestingly enough, on a goals per minute basis, Origi actually has the better numbers across all competitions - a goal every 244 minutes versus Martial's 279. 😉

Courtois

Can we say Luke Shaw?
Mangala
Otamendi
Ivanovic

Schweinsteiger
Matic
Henderson
Ibe

Hazard
Sanchez

*I'm a massive fan of both of the Liverpool players in the above team

@SummerOnions bit tough on Kompany, City's record with and without him is night and day. With him they'd be challenging again. Also Baines, hasn't he been injured most of the season ?
