Parcel bomb sent to Celtic boss Neil Lennon

By Rob Hastings

Wednesday, 20 April 2011

A parcel bomb sent to the Celtic manager Neil Lennon has been intercepted by police and the Royal Mail.

The device, described as "viable" and "designed to cause harm", was one of three sent to people linked to the Glasgow-based football club. £

Police said bombs were also sent to Paul McBride QC, Mr Lennon's lawyer, and Labour MSP Trish Godman.

The bomb sent to Mr Lennon was addressed to Celtic's training ground near Glasgow and was intercepted at a Royal Mail sorting office in Kirkintilloch on 26 March.

A second device was delivered to the constituency office of West Renfrewshire MSP Ms Godman two days later, but police were alerted.

The authorities were contacted about the third package on Friday after it was found in a letter box addressed to Mr McBride at law offices in Edinburgh.

The first two were initially thought to be merely hoaxes, but analysis later found that they were capable of causing harm.

Mr Lennon, a 39-year-old Catholic, from Lurgan, Co Armagh, stopped playing for Northern Ireland in 2002 after receiving a death threat, one of several since he joined Celtic as a player in 2000.

In January, a package containing bullets addressed to him was intercepted.

SNP leader and First Minister Alex Salmond said: "There is a major police investigation under way to ensure that the individual or individuals concerned are identified and apprehended and then brought to book with the full force of the law."?

Whatever about Glasgow, but from experience of witnessing it with people here in Ireland, most of the self proclaimed hardcore Celtic and Rangers fans i've come across wouldnt have been in a church since their Confirmation or even be practising their faith. Most of them just use it as an excuse to take things to a higher level.

It doesn't appear to be linked to any known sectarian group, rather a lone Rebel23-type, nutbag.

Yeah as always that often appears to be the case, slug.

Scottish football had had a mare of a 6 months.

Refs, managers, head of refs, players, fans.

From top to bottom, it's a mess.

The nutjob who sent it didnt even take into consideration the post office workers that could have been maimed

Disgraceful indeed.

Neil Lennon though would have to be one of the most antagonistic people in football. I'm not saying he deserved a parcel bomb in the post or anything so calm the fuck down, but if I was a Ranger fan and not the celtic one I am, I'd fucking loathe Neil Lennon with every pore in my body.

My guess is that Neil Lennon is to Rangers fans to what a threesome of El Hadji Diouf, Gary Neville and Kelvin McKenzie would be to ours.

Whilst I agree with Ryan about Lennon being antagonistic, the fact remains that no-one is sending parcel bombs to Fergie. The Old Firm, and Rangers in particular, need to reinvent themselves without the sectarian cultural dressing. And perhaps Lennon, just as he was the catalyst for changing Northern Ireland football fans into setting aside sectarian chants and behaviour, can unwittingly do the same for Rangers. I really hope so. I have a big soft spot for Rangers, but I won't be back in Ibrox until the attitude changes. I find the whole thing cringeworthy.

Oh absolutely, no doubt about it.

Scottish football and the Old Firm in particular is a horrible archaic backwater. Two teams that have disintegrated from any importance on a European scale bickering and fighting over who's the less shit out of each other; egged on by fans with roots in the 19th century screaming blue murder when someone has the temerity to celebrate a goal or take a fucking throw in in front of each other.

You make a good point re Lennon's moment at Windsor Park being the catalyst for change in N.I. footballing culture, cos that night 10 odd years ago (a game I was at incidentally) is exactly where most of the old firm fans are still at.

Pitiful.

With all due respect Ryan, thats the greatest load of shite you've written for a very long time

The incident occurred outside Celtic's Lennoxtown training ground
Seven people have been arrested over an alleged firearms incident outside Celtic's training ground at Lennoxtown.

Armed police were called to the complex in East Dunbartonshire on Sunday night following reports that someone had been spotted with a gun.

It is also believed that flags were draped across the gates of the ground.

Five women, one aged 19 and four aged 21, and two men, aged 17 and 19, were detained. They are expected to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court
