It isn't, not in the sense that they're aware of, because they obviously aren't thinking even remotely logically by the virtue of the fact that they are depressed enough to be trying to end their lives.
Depression, PTSD (& stress to a lesser degree) stop your brain functioning in the same manner. Most people assume that just means the chemicals aren't created or are created at the wrong time, but it's deeper than that. The brain synapses remap or fire incorrectly.
In layman's terms that means your brain literally isn't working correctly. What is logical to most people, or to that same individual when depressed, isn't logical to a depressed person, empathy is often completely absent as that part of the brain doesn't work, the emotional cortex is used up or bypassed.
The brain mappings are interesting actually, when you map a toddlers brain & a teenagers brain they work the same way, which explains selfish behaviour, tantrums etc becoming prevalent in teenage years as they once were in those early years.
The brain mappings of PTSD & depression sufferers are extremely similar in manner ways.
So yeah, of course his family, & all those commuters who are stuck in an overcrowded sweaty train think he's selfish, but he would have had no idea himself at the time, or if he did would have had little or no ability to make sense or that.

Suicide is not a selfish act in any way shame or form, and the stigma behind is it was drives a lot of people to it tbh.
However there is a lot of studies in to suicide where they've discovered its meticulously planned. A suicide "on a whim" tends to be less common i think
