It's an odd signing ... Di Canio is either going to look like a genius (b/c of Borini if anything) or going to be the most hated figure in Sunderland.

[article]Andrea Dossena’s agent explains why he passed a Sunderland medical days after failing one for Torino. “He left Napoli without a real reason.”

The full-back completed a deadline day loan move to Sunderland, which will see him through to the end of his contract on June 30 2014.

“He left Napoli without a real reason, but these things happen in football. It was a mutual decision,” Roberto La Florio told Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli.

“He was the first real signing of the Riccardo Bigon era, as the director came to Liverpool to get him. Napoli weren’t the only option at the time, as Zenit also made an offer, but he chose Napoli.

“This marriage started very well, but then things changed. There is no problem with the Azzurri, though.”

The move to Sunderland was also a surprise because only days earlier Dossena had failed a medical with Torino.

“In good faith during the medical he said that he felt pain and the club doctors looked deeper, finding a 1cm lesion in the quadricep. At that point they took a step back, because he wouldn’t be ready for three to four weeks and Torino needed someone straight away.

“We found the Sunderland option, had a meeting and they said the lesion will take four to five weeks to recover from, so they decided to sign him anyway.”[/article]

I haven't seen him since he left, but by all accounts Insua is much improved since he moved on. I always thought he was one we gave up on too soon.

I thought he had potential, and maybe he's fulfilling it now, but it was an understandable decision at the time TBF.

Deary me:

The former Liverpool defender completed his deadline day season-long loan move from Napoli yesterday, after being told he did not figure in Rafa Benitez's plans for the new campaign.

However according to the agent of the 31-year-old, Sunderland went ahead with the signing despite an injury that is set to keep him sidelined for the next month.

"In good faith during the medical he said that he felt pain and the club doctors looked deeper, finding a 1cm lesion in the quadricep," Roberto La Florio confirmed on Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli

Manager Paolo Di Canio will be desperate to get the former Udinese man back to full fitness as soon as possible after a disappointing start to the season.

Dossena, who joined fellow Italian Fabio Borini in signing for the Black Cats, returns to the Premier League after a three years in his native homeland.

LOL, Rafa sold him twice.

Not quite accurate, is it?

Hasn't he:
Bought him once
Sold him once and
Loaned him out once.

Seems like Rafa is just experimenting with him to see what he's good at.

He reminds me of this ancient game - move the iron filings around to give a baldy man a head of hair or a bushy beard.

Now his Italian manager and coaching staff have left before he's fit to play a minute. Great signing!

Maybe Sunderland will go after Aquilani next?
