Not another Rafa thread

I also know that Rafa had a policy of identifying and signing players as early as possible which probably would have meant that there would have been more activity in June/July.
He also signed bosman players as well, something we haven't pursued this summer.

I'm going out on limb here but I do somehow feel that most fans would be more mellow if Rafa was in charge.

I am not going to slag Benitez off here, but I don't think what you have said here is totally true, or fair.

Yes a lot of his dealings (not all) were done earlier than this, but not in his first season, when the deals were done towards the end of August. In subsequent seasons he - like any manager - would be able to see how his team were performing throughout the year, would be able to identify possible signings and enquire about them early. Not that easy for a manager in his first summer.

Similar story for Bosmans really - a lot of the time the deal is done before the summer. Although frankly I am not sure why you are using this as a reason as to why we should have gone for Benitez, given that the Bosman signings he made ranged from average to fucking awful, and were always on big money and long contracts.

You're right about most of it. But Rafa seemed to have evaluated the team and identified his targets before he joined.
I seem to remember that Alonso, Garcia and Josemi's transfers were somewhat painless. The only thing he didn't expect was Owen leaving.

Maybe he did, maybe he didn't. Who knows?

We do know though that he didn't sign Alonso or Garcia until later in August. Maybe he knew he wanted them earlier but needed to wait for funding or maybe he looked at the squad when he arrived and thought about who he needed to bring in. You could speculate either way, but we can't really be sure, just as we can't be sure what the situation with the club regarding transfers is now.

Josemi's transfer was very painful indeed, though not, I suspect, in the way that you mean!

Lol at Peter of the Hague.

Aye, Brendan who'll spend nowhere near this Summer should only get until January before we can turn on him, appaz.

Surprised he's not getting a shit load of cash, 5 years and beyond, I thought that was the benchmark.

If we're in the bottom 3 in January with a real prospect of being drawn into a relegation scrap, would you want his position reviewed?

Nope, but if we're not looking like we've got a chance of the top 4 at that point, I'll wager he'll have people calling for his head.

If we have a bad opening 5 games there'll be people calling for his head. Fans are pathetically impatient these days.

I'd feel a lot less concerned about prospects for the upcoming season with Benitez in charge rather than Rodgers.

I'm hoping my calm is restored early.
