Not looking forward to this one, a home game might have been a timely chance to get back to winning ways, but this is a tough tie to be having on the back of the derby defeat.

--------------Reina---------------
-Kelly--Carra--Skrtel--Aurelio
--------Lucas-Shelvey----------
-Pacheco--Cole-----Jovanovic
------------N'Gog----------------

Lucas will play, no doubt, I can't see Shelvey getting near the first team though 🙁

If we field that team we'll loose with a margin.
we'll lose to a Dossena hat trick

I think we all need to get over this magical idea shelvey will start. Roy clearly has no intention to drop either of the cunt twins for genuine talent or a player who can actually make a decent pass forwards

We will lose.

Roy Hodgson will resign this weekend, after an unbearable two or three days in the media spotlight.

That's what i think will happen.

Awesome to note that in Shelvey we have someone to replace the Aquilani of '09, the Insua of '08, the Mark Gonzalez of '07, and the Sinama Pongolle of '06... I.e. 'should be in the team ahead of X, creative attacking talent stunted by our overly cautious manager yaddie yaddie yaaa'.

Then he plays and he's fucking muck.

42 actually.

I can't really be arsed about this game. Play the reserves/kids for all that I care. Shelvey at least looks like he cares.

I'd rather stand a chance of winning the game on sunday, although that is probably unlikely aswell...

It has to be the first team,Mark.

We need a win, doesn't matter how it comes, we just need a win, if we play the first team and Torres bags a goal or two then even better.

Same team that started yesterday for me, throw Pacheco and shelvey on for some of the second half if the going's good but we really can't afford to be cavalier over any match.

Poulsen will be back unfortunately and will probably partner Lucas in midfield in an attempt to win a point.

to be honest I couldn't give a fuck about what happens in europe, it's what's happening in the league that should be the primary concern. that said winning the uefa cup is probably the only way liverpool will qualify for europe next season.

The reason people are clamoring for him is that he has given the impression that he has the ability to pass to a red shirt ahead of him - a quality sorely lacking in our players now.

Don't get me wrong I've got high hopes indeed for Shelvey and probably even higher than I normal would've because of these bleak desperate times, but after having seen him play a few times at Reserve-level there's nothing to me that suggets that he'd go straight in and improve us at this point in time even though especially Lucas and Poulsen has failed to deliver.

Poulsen for all his critics has after all played at highest level for 12-years and has even played well for quite a few Seasons. I'd be absolutely mystified if he at least doesn't improve himself in our coming games.

That said I wouldn't mind one of the youngster beeing moved closer to the starting XI either but whether it should be Shelvey or perhaps the few year older Irwin I don't know. I don't think Lucas deserves many more chances in our famous red-shirt and I wouldn't mind see him beeing replaced on the bench by a hungry younger player.

There's little or no comparison between the players you've listed and Shelvey. Aquilani was a sicknote and completely unsuited for this league, Insua was fat, shit and slow from day 1 and anyone with half a clue about football could see this, Gonzalez came from obscurity and was hardly seen as a saviour. The only decent comparison is Pongolle, who like Shelvey, was a highly touted youngster and IMO wasn't that bad in a red shirt anyway.

Shelvey might not turn out to be a world beater. But I'd happy to take anyone on a bet that he won't be 'muck'. The signs shown so far just don't add up to that:

i) Highly touted English youngster (you know like Milner, Lennon, Rodwell, Bale - the kind we always complained of never snapping up)
ii) Recommended by Dalglish
iii) England u-19 captain
iv) 40+ first team games for Charlton at the age 17
v) Very impressive pre-season showings including a MOTM performance against a full strength Bundesliga side in a game that included the likes of Gerrard and Cole
vi) Strong, well-built fucker with a smart technique and nice passing (and before you ask how many times I've seen him play, I've seen him in some 4 games already and you don't need to see a player 100 times before you can judge technique and passing)

He might not be the next Gerrard but barring injury, it's very difficult to see him being anything other than a solid Premiership midfielder (at the very least). And when his only competition in midfield includes two of the worst players to have for Liverpool in recent memory, you can understand why people are perplexed that the manager doesn't play him.

We'll grind out a 0-0 draw and Roy will be ecstatic.

More like we'll grind out a 1-0 defeat and Roy will be ecstatic of the performance.

Well said. Let's hope so!

I'm looking forward to watch Cavani, he's been excellent for Napoli since he joined them on loan

Nothing new there... we've been digging holes for quite some time now...

Well hopefully he's shit or we'll be looking at yet another defeat.

Is anyone going to this match?
I know Crump was talking about going.
Dunno if he actually is or not.

Yea, there's definitely a bit of the "new hope" about Shelvey, but aren't people really complaining that we haven't even attempted to see whether he'd do something, when we've absolutely nothing to lose? And that's a fair point.
