This has been reported in the transfer clockwatch on Sky

Football Editor: According to reports in France, Newcastle United are trying to sign AC Milan midfielder Mathieu Flamini

Could he be a replacement for Mascherano

He is 26 and has premiership experience

i thought he played very well at left back for arsenal the season cole was injured for ages

hows he done at milan?

Get him in at left back and Banega in for Mascherano. That would give us an unbelievably strong team.

The expectation is that Javier is on his way out! Roy may still pull a rabbit out of the hat!

He's a central midfielder. Why on earth would we sign him for left-back just because he filled in there for a period for Arsenal?

Mental.

Yep, the LB role was stopgap. He did alright there just like Masher did at RB for us but it shouldn't be regarded as a permanent fixture. Flamini is a decent defensive midfielder. Combative and pretty decent on the ball. Arsenal we're silly to let him walk.

i think he got a bit huffy about being played out of position too, is he on a free again?

Not saying he's not a decent player but aside from that one season alongside Fabregas in the middle, he's not really accomplished a whole lot, has he?

Milan was an awful move for him.

Isn't Flamini the guy who hung around at Arsenal basically doing two bits of fuck all, until he suddenly had a great season as a DM and then promptly left?

We could do far worse than him as a replacement for Mascherano but he always struck me as a bit of a cunt.

I always thought Flamini a criminally under-rated player. Arsenal lost it the following season after he and was it Viera left ? They have not had a midfield enforcer since. He gets forward too. Yes, I'd like to see him here. Is he only 26 ?

2007-2008 was not Wengers best season, transfer wise. He had Lass Diarra and Flamini. Wenger sold Diarra to Portsmouth in January for small money. Flamini left in the summer for free as Wenger was not willing to meet his wage demands.

Not too sure about Flamini though. In 2007-2008, he was brilliant - the perfect foil for Cesc. I dont think I have particularly noticed him before that.

as a replacement for Lucas I think he would be a great signing, as a replacement for Mascherano I would be a little concerned. However we still have no idea what personal/formation Hodgson has in mind for next season so its difficult to speculate what sort of players we will need, other than a left back and a striker which we have needed for about 12 months now

That's as accurate as it gets, yeah

That and similar comments in this thread surprise me. He may be no galactico, but the Arse have never replaced him and it's cost them IMO, plus - though it isn't his position - he filled in really well at LB for a while. We could do a lot worse as a replacement for Masher.

If we got Flamini and Ever Banega, we will be quite well equiped for the season.

I think we can get them both with some spare change left over for other positions with Mashcerano money.

Exactly my thinking. He aint getting no game time in central midfield or at left back with Milan. He is a more than decent option at left back. He is not going to get into our team as a central midfielder while Mascherano is still around. Should he leave, Roy is likely to replace hinm but with who is anyones guess.

Ever Banega is tipped but Roy is playing his cards close to his chest!

would be a good buy imo, some ac milan fans actually feel he should be ahead of gattuso at the moment, we could get him at a bargain price if milan don't come to their senses.

Somebody posted a rumour on here saying it's Gattuso we're actually after.

That would make for an interesting dressing-room if he knows what Stevie said about him in his book.

is a very good player, a real work horse, sell lucas for and buy him and we would still be in profit,

Does it match what I say on this website?

Past-it, overrated, beardy, useless cunt?

I don't think Gattuso is past it - he just can no longer be relied to stay healthy and play a full season. He's an important figure for them, and that's why he should be a spot starter (i guess Ambrosini's back up) only.

More or less, except for "past it", which suggests Gattuso reached a decent level once, something with which Stevie would disagree.

Stevie on the subject of Gattuso:

"I wasn't worried about Gennaro Gattuso before the game [Edit: Istanbul, of course], during the game or after. To me he's all mouth. He looks aggressive, but to me he's as scary as a kitten. I swear I wouldn't mind playing against Gattuso every week. He doesn't hurt you. I have never seen Gattuso play a killer ball. He won't nick a goal either. The type of midfielder I worry about is Juan Roman Riquelme, Kaka or Ronaldinho. They go: through pass - bang - goal. Gattuso just plays for the fans. Theatrical. Emotional. The Italian was also the one Milan player who had a smirk on his face leaving the pitch at half-time. I saw it. Fuck you."

Yep. And he gave the peno away by clipping Stevie's back leg as he ran through (contrary to the amazing insistence by far too many on here that it wasn't a penalty).
