It's 'loyalty' that's fucked England up time and time again over the years with managers playing the 'favourites' game. Pick your best, in form, players, end of. The FA should instruct Hodge to pick a number of younger players that will likely be key components of the team in the Euros and next WC, because any England manager will be simply trying to protect their position as long as they can and to hell with the future.

Exactly! Greg Dyke laid down an ambitious plan to win the World Cup in 2022. No matter how laughable that may seem to many, including myself, it's still a plan and a target. You don't wait until 2020 and the qualifying campaign to implement it, you start now. Building a foundation and a football philosophy, just like the French did in the mid 90s and the Spainish have been doing for a number of years.

That means we start now. It's amazing how many people think we have no chance of winning the World Cup but still want us to use the same tired formula for failure we've been using for 30 odd years.

We need to find a system and get a squad that plays best to the system. Not find a squad and make them play a system that allows favourites to do what they want and get away with it. The likes of Beckham and Rooney have treated England as their own sideshow in recent years and as long as that continues then we will fail.

It's not always about the best XI, it's often about the most cohesive XI. Playing to strengths, not allowing people like Rooney to do what they want, when they want regardless of form or fitness.

I get your point but there are 23 places in the squad and they can afford to have Sterling and Townsend in it but not 3 left backs.
Sure, my previous statement would also mean that Cleverly would get picked ahead of Hendo so of course it a bit flawed but you have to have some level of loyalty towards the players as well.
Also Sterling has been in and around the squad during the campaign, this was Shaw's first cap.

How many caps had Michael Owen won before France 98? I don't care how many caps Shaw has won, if he's the form player and he fits well into the system we are looking to play then take him. Better that than an older less hungry player who's also likely to be more injury prone.

But who did Owen replace? If I remember it correctly it Shearer and Sheringham who lead the line, right?

I'm not sure but Shaw's situation is a bit different imo. First off, I don't think he'll be that much of an upgrade to Cole and Baines.
Second, Cole played well yesterday and so did Shaw.

I get that you're looking to the future and that he's on form but I don't think he'll make that much of a difference.

It will for the future! And that's the point! Owen was replacing one of shearer or sheringham. Shaw replaces one of Cole or Baines. It's actually less risky considering how vital Shearer and Sheringham were to England at that time.

Yes of course but Owen didn't really replace Sheringham before the World cup in 98?
He did it during the tournament.

Why do I even bother with this thread? Take whoever you want to the world cup.
COME ON SWEDEN!

Might be better not to spoil the youngsters by keeping them out of Hodgson's influence.
Like sending your well behaved kids to stay with their grandparents over the summer holidays then visiting them to find out they've been turned into fat, spoiled bastards?

Some of the quality responses from that Agger ban petition...

I would say at least 70-80% of the people who legitimately want Agger to get some sort of retribution are Norweigan. Too funny.
