Shaw should be in the squad but Hodgson likes his "oldies" and his Fulham boy Smalling apparently.

Can't blame him if he takes Cole though. By all accounts I've read, Cole did well yesterday (I didn't watch the game), so he seems to still be able to perform at this level. And as long as he does that, his experience will give him an edge. It's easy to say play the youngsters, but facing a crunch elimination game, would fans really feel comfortable with an 18-year-old leftback in his first major tournament in a cauldron of fire? As long as the "oldie" is still capable of playing at a very good level, he'd be as good a pick as a fresher youngster, if not better, because of his experience.

I agree. I actually rate Cole more than Baines but I just think it's unfortunate that Shaw, who is good enough, is surplus to requirements. But his time will come soon enough.

But the point is, Cole is over 30, Baines is 30 later in the year. In order for England to improve at international level we need to blood young players earlier at tournaments. We won't win this so why not ditch one of Baines or Cole (I'd prefer he ditched Cole) and take Shaw as his replacement and get him valuable tournament experience.

Its a no brainer to me. Why keep on bringing people to a tournament we won't win and who won't be here for the next one. Its totally backwards.

Well it depends, from that perspective it does sound more logical to bring Shaw but Cole and Baines were a part of the team who helped England qualify so it would be pretty unfair to leave them out.
Also Shaw is only 18 years old, he's got all the time in the world.
I mean he could mind as well be playing for the u19s.

Blooding young players is a risky business when the team overall isn't doing that well. Obv.it has to be done at some point, but straight into a World Cup? I'm not so sure that'll pay off either for England or for the player himself.

Wilshere out for 6 weeks, lol Agger.
The funny thing is that it wasn't even a foul, they both went for a 50/50 and Agger came out better, Wilshire fell to the ground like a little girl. Hodgson dismissing it as just a bruise shows how unimpressed even he was. Christ Wilshire is a proper fucking girl.

LOL at the videoclip heading ... Hard tackle? It was a coming together of feet. If you and Agger kick each other, and you end up more broken than him, something's wrong with the calcium content in your bones.

But Wilshere being an Arsenal player, I suppose that's not a surprise.

What a fucking fanny

Looking at that clip again if anything Wilshere bottled it at the last second, tbh i can understand why he would do that in a friendly with his injury record but its backfired for him there.

Cool it with the soft vagina shit.

His Foot has a fracture. Do you think he faked that?
It might not be a foul but their two feet still collided with great force. It could just as easily be Agger who got injured. Lucky for us it wasn't.

You make it sound like he should have just got up on his broken foot and play on manfully...

I broke my metatarsal properly in a challenge not dissimilar to that, I had to hobble about for 10 mins because we used all our subs, drove home, went into burger king on the way. It's obviously not a play on injury but imo lying on the ground in agony is a bit much. Imo he's a fanny.

Its the best time to do it because its win win. The expectation is low, so we can blood them without an expectant nation and media. They do better than expected and confidence is boosted and they have experience. If they don't do as well, then they've still got the big tournament experience.

@Modo sticking with the players who got us there is all well and good but that means sticking with Andros Townsend over Sterling. There is a difference between the qualifying finishing and the tournament beginning of about 6-8 months so form can change, there can be injuries etc.

Plus the tournament and qualifying are two different animals in terms of quality of opponents and time between games. We don't need Baines and Cole because only one can play, so pick one and then pick a younger back up. I'm not saying pick Shaw as first choice.

Most Arsenal fans I know think he's a big fanny. All bark and no bite.

Now that you mention it, I do recall breaking my clavicle once. and my forearm before that.
It's true that you don't really feel the pain till some time later. you may not even know it's broke at first.

Still, there is some comfort in lying on the ground for a while. I think the close up camera shots make it look a lot more dramatic than it is.

Yea fair enough it's probably the most dramatic picture they could find. It's amazing how many injuries come from a player not controlling the ball properly and going after it, in this case Agger and like you said we're lucky it wasn't him.

Still going with fanny though, I think it's in some footballers to really ridiculously exaggerate any pain felt on the pitch

I get your point but there are 23 places in the squad and they can afford to have Sterling and Townsend in it but not 3 left backs.
Sure, my previous statement would also mean that Cleverly would get picked ahead of Hendo so of course it a bit flawed but you have to have some level of loyalty towards the players as well.
Also Sterling has been in and around the squad during the campaign, this was Shaw's first cap.

It's 'loyalty' that's fucked England up time and time again over the years with managers playing the 'favourites' game. Pick your best, in form, players, end of. The FA should instruct Hodge to pick a number of younger players that will likely be key components of the team in the Euros and next WC, because any England manager will be simply trying to protect their position as long as they can and to hell with the future.
