Mane's form, again

Glad Mane scored today...I feel like today sums up Mane and how he is viewed, Mane played well scored 2 and some ppl will be okay with that. He'll play exactly the same type of performance and some ppl will say he's shit and should be sold... Ppl saying he's been rubbish since the Covid season, you mean the same COVID season where everyone was terrible? I have watched him just as much as anyone and game for a game I feel Mane gets judged way harsher than the other players...

I wonder if Mane replacing Firmino is and always was the plan. He may not be as stylish but he is just as effective in his own way there. He'll be able to maintain a false 9 position even with diminishing pace for a few years yet. Hence buying players whose previous best position was LWF in Jota and Diaz. Wonder if we will re-sign him on reasonable terms with that in mind.

Jota has turned out to be equally proficient in both positions, can't imagine that was known beforehand.

Yeah he is a valuable player central or out wide. He's lost a bit of pace but some ppl going a little overboard about this.

When you look at Mane you can see he is quite quick mined and has a lots of tricks in his overall play and has never been a player to rely on his pace. So now as he losing a little bit of pace I think because of the natural flair he has that the overall drop off as he ages will be less steep.

Compare that with the likes of Traore or even Sterling who to me are more pace merchants when they age and lose their pace I'm not sure they will be able to offer as much.

Also the fact that Mane (and Salah) don't drink and live a clean lifestyles means that we should be able to get another 2 - 3 years or of these guys.

[article]"The situation with Sadio Mane, I am sick of it!" Klopp said.

"I just am sick of it that you take a player out of it and they could have done what they wanted, everything. They fouled him and he didn't get fouled. That was what I was talking about. It was nothing to do with the game. I have no idea.

"Maybe someone can explain to me why Sadio doesn't get free-kicks. Don't tell me he is a diver or whatever, he is not. I know him better than anyone else and he is not!

"Maybe if he has one, it is not a clear foul but it is always like this. Maybe there is a little contact and he goes down but then you see it in the situation. Or for the proper [fouls] he doesn't get them and that is what I don't like.

"Not enough protection? Whatever you want to make of it, just look at the situations and tell me that it is not always a foul."

Klopp continued: "And then you have Ben White over in the corner, Sadio pressed him and then he kicks the ball out more or less. There is no contact, but it is still a free-kick for Arsenal, so it is smart from Ben White.

"But if Sadio is doing that, the whole stadium is on their toes and the referee is [thinking] 'oh my god.' I am sick of it and that is why I was a bit angry [on the sidelines]."[/article]

Probably Sadio does get unfair treatment sometimes.
But it feels like his first touch is getting more and more inconsistent. In one moment, he will have those WC touches and moves, then suddenly he might miss on simplest of things. Not sure if he is tired of getting kicked around by opposition players.
I don't think it is a question of ability but just how he feels right now.

For perspective, he's tied as third highest scorer in the PL, with Cronaldo and Kane.

No! He MUST be the top scorer for those who look to criticize him to give him a break, and still even then...

Mane is learning a new role and to my eyes, he's doing a grand job. It can't be easy having to learn to play in a new role and still be 3rd top scorer. Yes he's lost a bit of pace but his work rate, desire and commitment are not in question for me. He's had to go off to AFCON and play a massive part in winning the tournament and then come back and slot back into a title charge.

I still don't understand those (hopefully minority) who already seem to be booking Manes Uber out of the club, but I say keep the man, he's playing a valuable role, he's still a massive threat. If anything Mane this summer will get a nice break, relax and recharge his batteries, I think a lot is due to tiredness, hopefully, Diaz and Firmnino can help offset that.

He is definitely off pace and that could be fatigue related. as he and Salah had no winter break. As much as we might laud their fitness they're still humans. The international schedules need to be reformatted so they are done in blocks where atleast 5-6 games are played over 3-4 weeks

Mane must have been fucking exhausted for the last two years now because give or take that's how long his "slump" has lasted.

I don't really get the need to get all defensive and champion him. You won't find anyone on here that doesn't love Mane. He's a Liverpool legend and an integral part of one of the (if not the according to some) best teams in Liverpool history.

He still has good games, he still has great games and he still scores goals. But the noticeably good / great games don't come around as often as they used to.

And having games or long periods in games where he struggles to hold onto the ball or find team-mates is nothing to do with learning new positions. That was happening when he was playing LF before Diaz came too.

We went through a similar rather slow process with Firmino and he's now most definitely a bench player.

As I said, everyone here is a Mane fan and everyone has been rooting for him to rediscover his best form but it's been a while and we're still waiting.

I don't think he's been as bad lately, he's at least been weighing in with some goals and his pace is always a problem for the opposition, even if he's frustratingly (for us) making poor decisions. But yesterday was a reminder of how bad he has been more often than not lately. We should be looking to replace him gradually, which I guess is where Diaz comes in, same Jota and Bobby. We're in a nice situation at the moment of still having a couple of ageing legends AND the players who are eventually going to replace them. And as Bobby showed yesterday, that experience can be crucial at different times.

Say what you want about Bobby and Mane, but even if their influence is fading, they have still scored crucial goals in the big comps this season, which will make the difference we didn't have in reserve a year or two ago. Same with what Minamino has done in the domestic cups.

Mane deservedly MotM. Has Klopp done it again ? Mane seems reinvented+reinvigorated through the centre.

What a warrior. Scored our reply against Madrid in '19. Sparked our comeback against Barca when he played in Hendo. Won the penalty in the CL final. And who could forget his part in that unbeaten run in the title winning season - that last minute winning goal against Villa with his head while taking a boot in his face. Yes his form has been poor, but he always always fights for us. He's a lion.
