Lucas - Silly fouls thread

Would just like to clarify that I criticised Carra's ball control and rightly so. Going forward? No, not really.
I expect a CB to be able to pass the ball and control it.
Dribbling or doing forward runs is a bonus but not a requirement.

His ball control and passing wasn't bad though was it? You exaggerated it, he worked on his play for years and it was never a significant issue. About once every blue moon he fucked up because he wasn't Maldini, but don't all defenders? Elegant defenders get away with murder.

They all do, but in all fairness some of the mistakes Carra's made are just silly.
Maybe Carra's unlucky that his mistakes tended to happen in important games, hence why I seem to remember most of them.
FA cup final vs West ham
Fa cup semi final vs Everton
Europa League knockout stage vs Zenit.

Cause the only thing bad I remember Hyypia doing is getting red carded against Man U after like 5 mins.
Agger lost the ball to Zaki against Wigan and they took the lead.

Maybe I do have an agenda against Carra or maybe his mistakes are just more memorable?

Like I've said before, between 2004-2009 Carra was one of the best CB's in the premiership.

I wince like the next person whenever he mistimes a challenge or clatters into someone giving away a foul in a dangerous position, but I genuinely think we'll see the best of Lucas (i.e. his pre-long layoff form) soon. One, he's getting stronger and regaining that form, bit by bit. Two, he's playing ahead of a better defence, more suited to the high-pressing game Rodgers wants. Three, him and Gerrard in a double pivot now reinforces their strengths (reading the game, tackling and effective distribution) and minimizes their collective weaknesses (lack of athleticism and legs).

Players with shite positioning need to tackle more often.
If you have shite positioning you don't get the chance to tackle the player then do you?

Anyway Lucas is a good distance ahead of nearly every other DM when it comes to positioning as can bee seen from the interception stats.

He's still shit and this thread isn't filled with agenda driven bollocks.

Well there aren't many decent out and out DM's about but the notion is we could have a more rounded midfielder/different style player there instead. I'm sure you can think of a few. Off the top of my head, Newcastle, Everton, Chelsea and Fulham all have players we could have feasibly gone for to play a deep role. I'm sure there's plenty of players beyond that too, here and abroad. It's not even about a lack goals or attacking involvement, it goes with the territory with DM's, it's the fact he doesn't really excel at anything, not when you consider the downside to his defensive game is giving away needless freekicks in dangerous territory.

He is above average for tackles and interceptions. Which is a vital part of being a defensive midfielder. The only problem is he is probably also above average for giving away fouls which is not too good for a defensive midfielder.

Who have Newcastle, Chelsea Everton and Fulham got who we could have gone for to play the deep role?

I'd guess tiote, mikel/romeu, Fellaini (they did anyway), and Fulham....pass

I'm not overly convinced by them myself

I have to say, it's very refreshing to come onto a site where the majority of posters are seemingly more grounded with their opinion of Lucas. Christ you go onto some sites and its like logging onto a parralell Universe where Lucas is the greatest of the greats and really can do no wrong. It's always baffled me.

You sure it's that different here?

Just seen the tackle on Cleverly again, 88th min.there's a very high possibility that Lucas cannot tell the difference between players foot and the football... must be a non-duality thing... 😉

[article=http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/blogs/pitchside-europe/much-liverpool-renaissance-attributable-lucas-091657074.html?]Liverpool have made 88 tackles in the league this season, which is eight more than any other team in the division. The fact that their closest competitors are Crystal Palace, Stoke, Sunderland and Aston Villa speaks wonders of the work rate of this Reds side, who, by nature, are under the cosh considerably less than their counterparts. It's clear that Rodgers has asked his side to pressurise the opposition, and there are few players as capable or willing to do so as Lucas Leiva.

The Brazilian took a little while to get back to his best following a lengthy spell on the sidelines but now fully fit he is one of this team's most important players. Given that the side as a whole has made the most tackles in the league it comes as no surprise that Lucas has made more than any other player in the division with 18.

His work in midfield isn't pretty, and therefore is often overlooked, but the 26-year old ticks play over nicely. Only ten players have completed more passes in the league this season (170), with Lucas' 86.7% accuracy indicative of his safety first approach, often feeding the plentiful creative players at the club having won the ball back for his side in midfield.

The Brazilian is not particularly tall, standing under 5'11", but his commitment in the challenge, be it on the ground or in the air usually sees him come out on top. He's won eight aerial duels already this season from 11 in total and after a nightmare spell with injuries he's back to his best, reinforcing the fact that he remains one of the league's strongest defensive midfielders.[/article]

The stat with Lucas in the team and not just highlights that we dont have a dm as back up.
Allen, Henderson or Gerrard - none of them are effective there. You could say Spearing was the closest we had and he wasnt good enough regardless.

Capoue would have been a brilliant signing for us. But Fernando Reges is out of contract next summer - sign him up. Sorted and he'd probably push Lucas out of the team pretty quickly.

It's a bit surprising that Lucas is apparently quite content in his role, because, as has been said, it's not pretty and is quite destructive, but he's never been limited to that it terms of potential. Coutinho was saying the other day that Lucas is superior to him in terms of technique, but rarely gets much chance to use much of it. I guess he's just happy to be in the team every week.

That stat calls yaya toure a dm?

Hes more productive than most AMs if that is the case..

Fantastic the way the main case for Lucas in this thread is a collection of stats from various sources, which of course is the most conclusive evidence one would need, against the views of the average football fan and what they can see with their eyes.

It's like the Suarez clinical efficiency point, while people post about how many chances he needs to score, the main crucial point that he has more chances than most due to his overall ability and he's scored bucket loads, is overlooked. Oh and the fact that you only have to watch the guy to know he's a fucking mercurial talent.

Lucas on the other hand.... he's a model pro, has the perfect attitude and is a solid player who's unspectacular and occasionally a bit of a non-entity. Didn't we establish that years ago? No amount of statistical guff is going to turn him into a World beater. He's not Wonderman, he's Clark Kent.

Never seen SG's winner against Olympiakos in '05, I presume..?
