Lucas + Johnson - the axis of awful

Johnson might fulfill his potential one day, ditto Lucas. And I don't think Rosco was saying he wants to be a right back, so the Ally McBeal analogy doesn't really work.
.

I read that analogy differently.

Watching episodes of Ally McBeal and thinking you can practice law or watching a game of football and presuming you understand footballing tactics.

I presumed that was Ryan's point??

I'm just stirring and hope the two of them lock heads for a page of two, makes for good reading. 😉

Makelele had no problem finding a team mate. He may have been less interested hitting the longer passes but he was a quite fine footballer overall as well as midfield enforcer.

Makelele found a team mate in order to get rid of the ball. Lucas goes looking for the ball in order to pass it.

What's tactics got to do with Lucas? He's just shit at footy.

I'm not anti us having a DM or a sweeper or whatever. Just not a shit one. Is anyone going to say that Lucas is as good as or better than any of Masch, Hamman, Whelan, Molby, McMahon, Souness etc... Or can we all just agree he's the shittest fucking wankbag we've ever had in that position?

Johnson's biggest problem is that he is either very good or absolutely dross. He rarely finds the middle ground or any semblance of consistency.

He will play a blinder one week where he is one of our most creative players creating chance after chance after chance. The next week however he will offer nothing going forward and get done time and again on the defensive end.

Really frustrating.

Exactly

I'd prefer consistency rather than what he offers

But that's pessimism

Tactics has a lot to do with it. Mignolet will roll the ball out to Lucas, and he will look up to see if he can pass it to Gerrard, or Coutinho, or to Enrique. Then he will turn and pass it back to the defense. 3 seconds later he will get the ball back and do the exact same thing. And he'll keep doing it.

Lucas is basically like a lab rat that never learns no matter how many times you electrocute it. He's ideal, because the alternative is we get a cunt who hoofs it back to the other team and we all get shown up for how shit we are at footy.

Yeah Dantes. The only alternative is to buy a shit replacement who can't pass. Why didn't I see that?

We don't need to buy an alternative. The player in that position simply needs to submit to Rodgers, to be broken by him and follow his every instruction like a slave. If we buy someone it will take time to break them, and in that time we'll finish the season in 7th.

We'd be better off working on breaking Henderson or Rossiter.

We kept the ball away from Villa for an entire half, and on their own ground for fucks sake. That was either down to Lucas being a broken slave or a tactical genius. If doesn't matter which. All that matters is that there aren't any tactical geniuses who will come to this club, apart from Alonso perhaps.

If we replace him then we're back to competing against teams with better players than us, and we'll concede goals, and we'll lose games. It doesn't matter how monstrous or talented the DM is, the cunt will win the ball back, he can even have a 100% pass completion rate, but unless he plays like Lucas did on Saturday we'll just be conceding 10% more possession to the other team.

As poor as we have sometimes been in the last 2 games, we have kept clean sheets and won both. There's definately room for improvement.

Both positions need to be strenghtened if we are going to move forward. With all the changes we've done its okay not to do them this season but I fully expect us to buy a new rb and dm next season.

Johnson and Lucas are average. If we want to win something we need better players.

All the changes? What? We've got Aspas filling in while Suarez is banned... and we've got a new keeper... isn't that it?

Not me. I may not agree with Ross all the time, but at least he's not in the hyperbolic "Lucas is shite" camp of ignorance. There's a discussion to be had here.

I agree with Keni, it's the system that necessitates a Lucas type player, not the individuals.

Even if we kept the same 11, I think we'd function better by switching Henderson, Lucas and Johnson's positions.

Our current set up makes little sense

We started the season with 5 players in the first eleven that were bought in 2013.
3 of them this summer. I'm all for replacing them but we dont have the money to do it properly this summer.

Sorry I forgot about Kolo. It might seem unthinkable but after I've shagged them they go to the back of my mind.

You're sticking your neck out there dude.
