Lucas is staying

My choices for replacing Lucas this summer:

Gonalons
Schneiderlin
Witsel
Nainggolan
Sven Bender

Basically players who've had 3-4 years of top flight first team experience in that position. We should stay away from the likes of Carvalho and Imbula who're too raw at the moment. And we should certainly stay the fuck away from Delph.

It's a very important position, and I hope we spend some time thinking about it before spending.

Sven Bender and Nainggolan are closer to Henderson type, not really pure DMs. Like I was saying for years, I don't mind to replace Lucas with someone better, but 1) it's not the top priority by any stretch and 2) there are only a handful of players in Europe who would provide a clear, tangible improvement on him. If we have a chance to sign the next Mascherano or Vidal, do it, of course. If not, I say stick with Lucas. I had my share of frustrations with him, but currently the level he is playing at is very, very high.

I have to say, I've never said "I've taken your cheap shots at Charlie Adams for years" like some wounded petulant devotee to an individual. That would make me a lamentable twat.

The devotion is less to a particular individual than it is to the familiar. He finds it comforting to return again, and again, and again to the same two or three fixed ideas, which is why he takes it personally when they're criticised.

Guys - if this thread continues as is, it will get locked. Please try to keep out the personal jabs, WUM crap etc ... You know who you are.

There's something about Lucas and his ability to derail threads about him!

The "next Mascherano" could be Lewis Cook of Leeds. I hope the reports that we're genuinely interested in him are true because from what I've seen he has huge potential. I believe he had another great game last night as Leeds beat Bournemouth.

Good photoshop skills there. Putting Lucas' head on Mingolet's body. It obvious he isn't catching that ball, it's going to hit right in the gut.

I think you misunderstand the image. He's using extra sensory powers to levitate the ball. Wonderman.

Every season we have had Lucas as a regular starter for lack of better options, we have struggled to finish 4th. That is his level.

If you are telling me we would have had different results had Lucas started more of the games at the start of the season, i'd say you were delusional. What has been fixed in the later half of the season is how we move thw ball in the final third...this comes mainly from improvements from the new signings and the players who are playing in the final third. Our defence still get cut open far too easily. It's not all down to Lucas.

Im happy Lucas is being rewarded with a starting berth of late as he has performed more consistently than the other contenders...but ultimately we need better. If you put Matic in our team and Lucas in their team for example....we would have destroyed them and Mourinho would have shat himself and set his team up like he did last season

Nope. You're basically saying that Lucas wouldn't have made a difference.
If Gerrard had continued to play in Dm and we switched line up it wouldn't have mattered.
I'll present you with exhibit man U 3-0.

This is nonsense. The highlighted bit is the mirror opposite of what KJ is saying, and your so-called "exhibit" is totally hypothetical.

Arf. I wish.

My target is the sly suggestion that Lucas would have made a difference, one that he's trying to put forward as some kind of concrete factual evidence.

Or just like keep Wonderman and spend that money on a decent Goalie.

Wouldn't mind any of those, as long as we keep Lucas on too.

Yes, that'd fix the problem wouldn't it? Lock another thread instead of fixing the actual fucking problem.

How long are we going to have to put up with this really? Good threads, with worthwhile discussions like this one are continually getting fucking ruined. It's barely worth it anymore. Successions of the forum's respected posters who are fed up, and giving up.

You mods should do your fucking job, otherwise what's the point in you?

Ryan, I think people have tried to be fair that's all. The site has always had the scope to allow people to say what they want, within reason. If people act like dicks, posters will react accordingly and tell them.

I know I was bringing threads down retaliating, so, aside from today (briefly), I ignored him for the most part, stopped responding and let Modo get on with it. Other people got pissed off instead, he was warned and kept his head down. But we've been here a few times now, the snide comments and provocation starts up again until threads get ruined again, and we get the "why always me?" bollocks, again.

I don't want to see people get banned, especially when they do offer good elements to the site, but this personna is getting to be an almost cyclic routine that culminates in the same outcome. A few people sympathise when he clearly knows he's antagonising people.

Exactly. Lucas has only just turned 28, and as far as I'm concerned he's a plenty good enough in that role for a few more years now he seems to have recovered from his injuries.

It suits us because that would be almost perfect timing for young Rossiter to come into the team when he's around 20 or so.

Mark, I get the logic and the sensitivity, but he's ruining threads continuously. It's not a one-off, and it's not tolerable.

It's got to the stage where it's almost pointless discussing anything. So why should 1 person ruin the site for everyone else?

And please don't tell me to put on the 'ignore' function either.

Meh, I think the number of people who would defend him is dwindling. I know I'm off that. But, I do appreciate that you stopped following him around. That definitely DID help. Thank you for trying. Lets just put a vote to it.

A poll for 2 weeks. if its above 75% (or whatever number you want) he's out if its not he stays no arguing. Democracy.

Given your nickname, I would think you'd be a little kinder to ol' Lucas 🙂

I think there are currently 2 DMs in England who are definitely better than Lucas: Matic and Schneiderlin. Wanyama is physically more imposing, but Lucas is a better passer and has better positional sense. Not sure which one outweighs the other. Didn't see Song much this season, Fernandinho is not really a DM, so can't be compared to Lucas. Obi Mikel and Fernando are the top 2 teams' DMs and I prefer Lucas to both of them.

The name was given to me. I changed the Avatar not to be Leiva because I am not a diehard fan.

This is not to say I don't like Lucas. I love his attitude and I like his personality. And he was epic during his Wonderman phase. And he is looking a lot better now. I just think we need to find someone in that position with the same brain and a more impressive physical tool set. We're always going to need that steal.

I'm a logical guy, I'd probably let someone with proper football knowledge explain to me (with evidence) why he is better than I think or better than players I think are better than him.

I am relatively sure that Fernandinho is a DM and he was relatively vital for them last year. It allowed them to push Yaya up where he scored all those goals.

I think we've had the debate about Lucas, Skrtel, and Agger a hundred times on here. They've all been quite good for us at times, but on the whole have never been good enough to form part of a title winning core.

His current good form notwithstanding, I want an upgrade on him. That's been the case for about 5 years now.
