A nice touch from Rodgers (no double entendre!):
Brendan Rodgers has revealed that he sent Rickie Lambert a congratulatory fax after the Southampton forward scored on his England debut and accepted that the player’s late development suggests Liverpool may have acted too hastily by releasing him as a teenager.
Lambert, who returns to Anfield with Southampton today, was let go by Liverpool at the age of 15, having been one of hundreds who join the club’s academy every year in the hope of making the grade.
Although he subsequently struggled to establish himself in the lower divisions and was also released by Blackpool, the 31-year-old has blossomed late in his career and gone on to win full international honours with England.
Rodgers is not in a position to outline why, 16 years ago, Lambert was released, but the Liverpool manager did offer potential mitigating circumstances for the decision, suggesting it could be a symptom of a problem that he feels continues to affect British football — a tendency to judge young players too early.
“He is a terrific player,” Rodgers said. “People look back now and say it is a mistake, but there may have been something at the time that was a factor. Rickie may not have been interested in football at the time or there may have been something else in his life.
“He might not have been ready for what Liverpool was at that time, but within development it cannot just be about what the player is now. With young talent you always have to look at what they could be.
“You see so many young British players thrown to the garbage because maybe they are not strong or they are not quick at 12 years of age when they are going through growth spurts. Yet when they grow up they are as tall as anyone.
“The emphasis at the younger age should be technique and I am sure that at whatever age he left here Rickie Lambert would have been technically very good because he has those qualities now. If you are an academy and have a young player, it is not just what he can do now, it is what they can do later on.”
Lambert, who has a Liver bird tattooed on his shoulder, is assured of a warm welcome at Anfield, particularly after Rodgers strengthened Liverpool’s bond with the former Macclesfield Town player by congratulating him on winning international honours with England.
“I have been a big admirer of him and I sent him a message, a fax, when he made his England debut because I know he is a big Red as well,” Rodgers said. “I sent it on behalf of the club and all Kopites. He is a Kirkby boy and I was wishing him well and saying we were all proud of him playing for England.
Hopefully, now he won’t score against us.”
Rodgers is set to hand Victor Moses his home debut after the winger, who is on loan from Chelsea, scored on his first appearance for Liverpool in their 2-2 draw away to Swansea City on Monday night.
“Victor scored an excellent goal and I think the supporters will be excited by him,” Rodgers said. “Once he gets up to speed he will be a big hit. Given all the interest he had he only wanted to come here. That told me that he is type of player I want here.”
