Liverpool vs Southampton Post Match Thoughts..

I was livid when I saw that back four just before KO. Why 4 CBs when we need width and attacking FBs ? The only answer to that question that I could come up with was that Sakho was brought in to counter Lambert at set pieces, however he ended up marking Osvaldo. I still can not get my head around it. Our back four have been damn good until today, no matter who played. Toure in for the injured Johnson I can give him, Toure was our best player in the 2nd half and did at least try to push forward, but Moses had no help and our right side was non-existent until Sterling came on.

As for blame then being put on other players, in my mind it all comes back to 4 CBs and moving Aspas inside with Sturridge wide right, when he's looked the bomb in the centre, it must have shocked the players too and the result was there was no fluency in our game since we were always short of a man or two across the middle and when attacking. This defeat goes back to the back 4 selection and that horrendous first half.

and the keeper over playing it around at the back , it's driving me insane ...we did it so many times last season and nearly got ourselves in trouble and again today we were fucking about . rodgers must insist on it because that's 2 keepers doing it now but it's a load of crap .

Only caught last 30 minutes ................... Sterling was very poor. Sturridge was both selfish and off the pace. Subs had no impact.

Sterling made more impact driving us forward than the rest of the team had for 45 mins. You should be glad you missed the first 45. Yes, agree with the Sturridge comment.

but aren't retaining possession and pressing hard two of rodgers's core footballing beliefs ? i wonder what rodgers is trying as we don't look to be concentrating on them , well certainly the retaining possession part , like we did last season . Is he trying to change the style again ? perhaps not but one things for sure , we haven't looked a "footballing" team so far this season at all.

Quite right! Southampton played exactly to Rogers's template. And with a team of young english talent, thought Lallana was great today. Shame we can't swap managers!

I just talked to my mom - whose casually watched football for a grand total of 18 months- on the way to the store and we had the following conversation.

Mom: "How did they finish?"

Me: "They were awful."

Mom: "They really were! That other team was so much more aggressive."

Well, you win nothing is you avoid making basic but tough decisions. 4 centre-halves smacks of hopeless indecision.

I'm a bit worried tbh. Now we really need a win against Sunderland or the start to the season is quickly turning into meh.

Mignolet - 6 (would be an 8 but his dribbling and distribution just crush that).
Sakho - 5 (as FB) and 7 (as CB). Not his fault he was put there but killed us in an attacking sense.
Agger - 6 - expected better Danny.
Skrtel - 6 - expected better baldy.
Toure - 7 - didn't put a foot wrong as far as I can remember (even conceding the corner from Skrtel's stupid mistake). Looked much better when it seems Rodgers allowed him to go forward.
Lucas - 6.5 - played really well in the 1st half but it all went to pot in the 2nd.
Gerrard - 6 - a couple of excellent passes or driving us forward or the well taken FKS, is then followed by losing possession a couple of times in a row or over-hitting his passes, a very frustrating performance.
Henderson - 5 - his worst game of the season. Should have scored.
Moses - 7 - great in possession, not so much when not. Needs to learn to time his release of the ball better.
Aspas - 5 - some nice passages of play were then followed up by utter mediocrity, frustratingly inconsistent. Squad player SVP.
Sturridge - 5 - looked unfit. Damn stupid to destroy two of our best moves by being offside when it was so easy to have gotten onside. Just too greedy at times. His 'header' came off his shoulder, poor for a top striker.

Sterling - 7 - made a difference in that he worked back, took players on and indeed pushed Southampton into a more defensive formation than they had been all game.
Alberto - no time to assess but looked competent on the ball
Enrique - a couple of poor passes and a couple of sublime passes, but his inclusion helped us into a more attacking frame of mind and formation. Should have started.

Referee - 3 - utter wank. What If (re. penalty appeal).

Rodgers - 0 - fuck off ! This really was an absolutely horrendous team selection. There was absolutely no need to fiddle so much. Can't wait for his explanation as to how he came to engineer this defeat with that ridiculous team selection.

I have this theory that when results are going well, you're sitting top of the league, certain Managers get twitchy and suddenly decide they need to put all those coaching courses and badges to good use and show they know something we all don't, this mainly results in over thinking their selection/tactics and focusing too much on the opposition strengths. Result being, a team that EVERYONE who looks at it thinks, what the fuck is that all about?

We simply never got going today, not one period where we built up a head of steam with our play. A disjointed, insipid mess.

I think Sakho did pretty well overall today, one of the few players who can claim any credit from this game. Even at LB, just his sheer size and athleticism scared opponents and he did his best to support Moses, even though the lack of natural full-backs of course hurt our overall game immensely. As a CB he was good, not diving in as much but lots of Saints' attacking moves ended as soon as they got near him.

Yep, he was good today. Should play on wednesday aswell to improve his match fitness

I don't know how you can criticize Sakho's performance at LB considering how poor Enrique's passing was there. Sakho might have lacked the directness of Enrique, but his passing was miles better, and he did an excellent job on the ball while allowing Moses to create space.

Definitely better at LB than Agger at CB, or Gerrard at CM

Anyone who thinks we don't need Suarez will now understand that he will create 1-5 chances by himself every game that will help us become a bit more dangerous, and naturally give room to Sturridge etc ... Our first four games were average - at best - and we got 10 points. The 5th gave was average too, and our luck ran out. Shit happens, Suarez is back now - keep Sturridge away from the Manure tie - and let's fucking pound Sunderland and get the season back on track.

Sakho will hopefully prove a good buy but was it really worth it to spunk that much money on a CB now that we kept Skrtel and he has started well and got Toure too?

I mean Aspas, Alberto and Ilori was all more or less back-up or development players wasn't they, why we were yet to actually add players for the starting XI. And then we buy a CB. So we now have five or six or seven even.

Today our lack of options in midfield showed as blatant as ever.

Am I the only one missing Suso btw?

I thought Agger and Skrtel were shite today tbh. Skrtels mistake led to the goal aswell.

Enrique had been out with a knee injury so I guess Rodgers was a bit forced to play Sakho at lb.
Our injury list is a long read at the moment.

Why even play a semi-crocked Agger in the first place? Everyone knows he's fragile as few so why risk it?

He had 4 other CBs to chose from. I am baffled.

no coincidence they both looked shite when neither of them had a sufficient outlet. It just added unnecessary pressure because they'd play it wide and the fullbacks wouldn't know what the fuck to do and just play it back, Gerrard was equally guilty of coming deep to get the ball and then fucking around for too long and inviting pressure. Poor set up and a worrying lack of guile. Only Henderson and Toure did themselves justice.

These games are starting to resemble Arsenal V Bolton. It looked like men v boys out there today at times, physically and methodically.
