Liverpool vs fulham post match thread

Sturridge was very quiet but still caused problems. Fulham were putting two men on him allowing Suarez and Coutinho the space to attack. Johnson was really good, Lucas also (he even won loads of tackles without giving away a foul which has been my biggest criticism).

BERBATOV OUT SPRINTED HIM!!!!

The good thing about having two extremely dangerous strikers is that they're always going to create something (even last week, we should have got 1-2 goals from one of them). If our defense plays at a good level (see I told you wankers, Agger plays and clean sheet! 😛), and we can sort out our midfield balance, we can make a push at this. The league is weak this year ... and no better time to take advantage of this than now.

How fucking unreal is Suarez?

[article]8 - Luis Suárez is now joint top scorer in the Premier League, having only played six games. Agüero have played 10, Sturridge 11.[/article]

BERBATOV OUT SPRINTED HIM!!!!

I can imagine them both being excited at the possibility of actually winning a race for once, Berbatov getting in the lead, is just about to raise his arms as he's about to be reach the ball, and then the unthinkable happens... Henderson who started his run from the other end of the pitch goes past the both of them with ease and is first to the ball and passes it sideways.

Mignolet - 5 - not much to do but continues to exhibit enough dallying on the ball to give me palpitations.
Cisshoko - 4 - He was irrelevant. Hardly touched the ball and when he did he did virtually nothing until subbed off (bar one decent tackle near the HW line).
Agger - 7 - what we have now come to expect from our CBs, how refreshing.
Skrtel - 8 - an extra point for the fine goal, which with his head could just have easily have ended up at the corner flag too !
Johnson - 8 - what a difference a man makes. Width, holds the ball up well and wins tackles in the opponent's half.
Lucas - 7.5 - very good game from the much-maligned.
Gerrard - 9 - superb passing all over the pitch, won his tackles and showed energy too. Give this man too much space and this is what he'll do to you.
Henderson - 8 - excellent performance, fantastic closing down, some lovely well picked out passes. He still needs to add goals which he could easily do if he'd just have a calmer head instead of blasting everything.
Coutinho - 7.5 - great to have him back. The most noticeable aspect of how our game changes, when he is on the pitch, is how it speeds up. Instead of 15 passes to go 10 yards, when he has the ball he'll drift past 2 midfielders/defenders and now the full team is in all out attack-mode. He's like our Turbo-charger.
Sturridge - 7 - had a lot of attention but I felt he also made the wrong decisions a few times today, love his skills on the ball and how he can retain possession under extreme pressure though.
Suarez - 9 - he absolutely terrorised them. Come on Ref, give him the deflection too - he deserved a hatterick !
Enrique - 6 - good to get him on and some pitch minutes under his belt.
Allen - 6.5 - some good signs there, he looked a lot more confdent and played some nice forward passes, but Fulham were dead & buried by this time.

Rodgers - 9 - right team, right subs, right tactics.

I don't know if this was a practiced setpiece routine, but look at Sturridge and Suarez moving in opposite directions, dragging their markers with them and opening up the space for Skrtel to run into and finish with authority.

If it was rehearsed, that was an excellent bit of work.

Great game for us, hard to read too much into it as Fulham really didnt have any fight in them once the first goal went in, they provided very little resistence. But you can only beat whats in front of you and we tore into them like a team with a point to prove.

The pluses
- Agger and Skrtel are still our first choice centre backs when fit for me, competition from Sahko and Toure will do them the world of good
- Johnson came back and instantly reminded us what a gulf in class there is between him and every other right back option we have. Not everything he tried came off, but by god he tried everything possible
- 4 at the back, we have a better balance with a flat back four
- Coutinho, hes still not quite there and his 'killer' pass was sorely lacking but he sees options very few other players do and his play to stretch the opposition defences is absolutely top class. I think it will take a few games for him to get back to full speed
- The work rate was excellent all over the pitch was great, we kept the tempo high pressed them back and forced the mistakes
- Good to see Allen and Enrique back

the minuses
- Cissohko, I just dont get it, what is he supposed to be good at. Never closes down his man when in a position to cross, lacks any adventure going forward. Makes schoolboy mistakes a couple of times per game, the only plus is we didnt buy him, Id get rid as soon as possible because he just isnt up to the job
- Sturridge looks tired, against Arsenal last week and again this week he just didnt look like he was operating at 100%, possibly carrying a knock.

I know it was Fulham but they weren't as bad as some are suggesting. Technically very good but they were out-run, out-worked and out-thought.

Most complete performance from us this season.

First point: from the first moment Gerrard was further forward than he's been in months. It wasn't a reaction to the game - he played more behind the front two than anything. His switching with Coutinho was fantastic and while the little Brazilian was a constant threat it was the captain who consistently made them pay with three assists.

Second: Johnson - how we missed him. To Hansern - he's not under-rated by some of us. He'd have made a real difference against Arsenal and today his running was tremendous, his defending very solid and he gave others space.

Third: Different formation but Martin didn't miss a beat. Dominant at the back and scored up front. He was tremendous.

Four: Lucas was very good. Stopped everything and kept the ball moving quickly and, invariably, into space.

Five: Complete performance - if anything it was up front that let us down. Daniel could have had a couple, Suarez a hat-trick and Coutinho should have buried that one near the end. Pressing was great, passing very good, movement was excellent and possession unbelievable.

Six: We need to target 16 points from the next 18. Spurs away will be extremely tough but it's doable and would give us a great base for the second half of the season.

Seven: Let's see what Arsenal can do when they come to Anfield.

16 from 18 would be title winning form and I dont think thats realistic even if the fixture list is kind, remember we have dropped points to Swansea Southampton and Newcastle already. Id say 13 points is a good target and would still put us in a fantastic position to finish top 4.

The next 6 games are more than kind. 4 of them should pose no issue. Everton will need composure but Spurs are the only team there that I'd fear.

I know it took a massive deflection, but I thought if the shot was on target before the deflection it wasn't classed as an OG?

Can we begin to end the myth that Gerrard's corners are still shit?

They used to be, but they're not now. They've been improving consistently over the last 18 months and we got two goals from them today.

One thing I particularly liked about Allen when he came on is how he is prepared to keep possession and go forward rather than just laying it back for the easy/obvious pass

sadly there are haters out there. Johnson provides so much, tis true,

After Everton at home our pre-Xmas fixtures are going to decide if we are really in for a top 4 finish

1st Hull (a)
4th Norwich (H)
7th West Ham (H)
15th Tottenham (A)
21st Cardiff (H)

If we do well with these six, 13-15 points, then Xmas will decide if we are in with a shout of the big one; City and Che$ki away

The good new are that it's Norwich at home.
The bad new are that it's away to City.
And the not-good-nor-bad news is that it's only 5 games there.

So - edit your post...

😉

I've gotta say I don't actually fear any match now, home or away, in fact it's excitement that courses through my veins !

Six games - you didn't read it just counted the list ;-)

Citeh AND Chel$ki away is even worse 🙁((( My Xmas temper may be even more Bah Humbug than usual

Ooops! I did read it. Just didn't count the Everton game...

Anyway, 13-15 looks tough but doable. Hope we can do even better than that which will put us in a really strong position before the christmas games.
