Liverpool V Sunderland Season Opener pre-match thread 13/08/11

today's game can be anaylsed in detail with regards to the good things we did in the first have and the bad things we did in the second. lessons need to be learned and quickly because we will almost certainly be trailing the top teams and our very next game is a team we haven't beaten away in 10 years.

There's nothing positive happening. We sign poor players and play like a shit football.

You're a fucking shit football

It's hard to pinpoint the problem with the second half. But it's clear the team is still a work in progress and will take time to gel. And with all the frustrations on the pitch, the team was calling out for someone to step in and just push everyone on. I didn't see that. There was a moment where I sensed there was frustration in Reina when he had to step in to take a free kick near the corner because there were three red bodies around but they didn't seem to sense the urgency of the situation.

HAHAHAHAHA

We need another striker, we saw today the issue of having only one real attacking player with genuine pace and craft, when Suarez isn't there or he's out of sorts we look flat and predictable.

also don't let suarez take another penalty, seriously what the FUCK was that all about?!
Give it a rest Spidey. He did *win* the peno after all, and he's a world class striker. It's not THAT odd to let him take it.
doesn't matter who won it, only we score it. we have an expert penalty taker on the pitch, it's pretty fucking stupid and you can bet kenny is going to have a word.

not going to happen this transfer window, mark

Fuck it. I think what that shows more than anything is our mental fragility. As soon as we conceded, the whole team stopped playing with any tempo or confidence and we started looking nervous. Even at the end, when we should have been battering Sunderland, we just didn't look like we believed we could do it.
Yeah this is a major issue that has hung over us (the players , fans , everyone) for a long time now . I guess only by winning can we install a level of confidence like United or others have , where they just always feel they can win no matter what . Problem is it's hard to take that first giant leap and become winners (of a major trophy)

Agreed. Adam should have taken it, it cost us the points.

And the 1st dropped points sees the arrival of Sven the Cunt. Welcome back you shite excuse for a Liverpool fan.

I'm not saying he should have taken it, and I hope Adam does take them in future. But you've posted the same thing about four times as though it's the most counter-intuitive thing since quantum theory.

I doubt he is a better penalty taker than adam.
okay, wont mention the pen again 🙂

I think Downing will be very good for us, but I generally agree that another super-duper Suarezy sort of player would help us a lot.

Can we get Gerrard fit?

He did score a high pressure 'shoot out' one during the Copa America but yeah i would have expected adam to take it . But we scored very quickly after so it didn't impact much on the final score . Getting the second was the big issue , such a pity Downing's great effort didn't go in .

This is the performance of a midtable team I am afraid. Very poor stuff. We desperately need a goal.
First knee jerk posting goes to iseered
Indeed. Fucking moronic stuff.
I am not saying we are a midtable team, but that performance was very poor. I am sure you agree. I think we will play a lot better as the season progresses.
2nd half performance was poor.
Yes. So we played some good stuff, and some dreadful stuff, and it ended 1-1. Hardly going overboard and being 'moronic' when I say that is a poor performance overall and a poor result. 2 points dropped.
Like I said I think we will improve, but now the pressure is on and we go to the Emirates next.
The moronic stuff was from Wilko which I don't really agree with. Your initial posting was a kneejerk reaction to the poor performance in the second half. You didn't say it was top-of-the-table stuff from the first half performance, did ya?

2 points dropped is a little harsh comment. I reckon it was a fair scoreline considering our performance over the 2 halves. Not what we really want but at least we have shown signs that we can play better and it's a case of learning to sustain our first half performance through the 90 minutes.

fuck off....

This is exactly what i worried about with regards to playing flanno and robbo to much this season. you ca't protect them from pea-brained fuckers ruining their confidence. It happened with Insua, it will happen with these two as well, if we are not careful.

I'm happy we bought a full-back from that point of view...

today wasn't about mental strength, it was about fatigue, plain and simple. we should have made our sub earlier especially for the players who looked knacked after 50 mins

Very poor second half, couldnt hold the ball misplacing simple passes, Enrique didnt look to attack once. Shocking decision to play meriles on the left and move downing central/right. Meireles isn't good on the right and Kenny plays him left, absolute waste. Still very short of quality on the wings.Downing only real winger in the squad.

if I were going to take positives;
johnson will be fit soon
gerrard will be fit soon
henderson will get stronger
the team will get fitter

I really don't think today was about a lack of quality, not after the first half showing

perhaps ....but still , did you ever once feel we could go on and win it after they got the equalizer ? And it's been that way for years ...it's just frustrating .

Get Maxi on the bench next time. I know loads of people don't rate him, but he does have a bit of creativity in his locker.

and they didn't look half as tired as us so why are we so wrecked ?

I think we put too much emphasis on fitness and train the players too hard, it's the same every single season, we look knackered untill the turn of the year and then we look fresh as a daisy in the closing months.

I just disagree. Why would the two youngest players be the least fit? Flanagan looked like he was going to cry after leaving Larsson unmarked for the equaliser, and after that he was *never* in the right position and *all* his passes went to a blue shirt. Fatigue doesn't do that - shattered confidence does.
