Next up is Newcastle at St. James Park.

An away win for Roy is long overdue so hopefully he'll enjoy one come Saturday.

With Torres available again and Gerrard getting back to fitness Roy could actually face a bit of a selection headache. Not something we've been that familiar with over the past 18 months.

Here's my preferred XI:

............................................REINA............................................

GLENJO..................GREEK...............SKRTEL............KONCHESKY

KUYT...................GERRARD...............RAUL..........................MAXI

..........................TORRES....................BABEL..............................

I actually believe Lucas in no way deserves to be dropped and same acctually goes with N'Gog.

That said I'm not convinced playing Gerrard off Torres in a 4-3-3 will work as well as a 4-4-2 formation under Roy's very direct tactics. At least untill now we've actually played the best football with two strikers on top hence I wouldn't change that for this fixture at least. (IF Gerrard plays I hope it's either as a CM or AM as I do not want to see him beeing wasted on the right).

Konchesky deserves another game as he was very good against Villa.

Gerrard for Lucas is not what I call a "selection headache".

Well, obviously not.

The question here for me, is whether the Raul and Gerrard-partnership is actually as good as defending as it undoubtably will be when going forward?

Lucas covers a lot of ground and does a lot of running to free another striker after all. I hope he tries Gerrard and Raul alongside eachother whilst still fielding two strikers but I'm not sure at all.

Maxi and Kuyt should be the other way around for your formation.

Cheers, edited!

Gerrard shouldbe on the bench, but there's no way we should risk him if he isn't 100%.

Lucas should start, and let's see if he can kep his good perfoamences up.

Anyone like this?

Reina
Johnson Skrtel Greek Konchesky
Lucas Meireles
Kuyt (or Maxi) Cole (I know, I know) Babel
Torres

Hmm, Lucas has been largely anonymous in away games for me. I'd say start with Gerrard and if we get ahead then Lucas can come on for him.

What about Babel on the right?

He seems to look a lot more dangerous when he's running the channels and cutting in on that side, perhaps he could make a go of it?

I dunno - I seem to remember him playing there one time and being not bad. Worth a try?

I'm hoping some of the Newcastle players will be down in the dumps over Hughton getting the sack and we take them to the cleaners. We've had a lot of joy over Newcastle in recent years and long may it continue.

Gerrard (if fit) and Torres back in the team.

I predict Babel (if he plays) having a stinker and all the 'i told you so' Babel haters sticking the knife in. Hopefully Babel (if he plays) and Lucas can carry forward their good performances against Villa.

So for me i'd play the same team as last week with Torres in for N'Gog and potentially Cole in for Kuyt with Maxi moving to RM..

Taylor, Gosling, Ben Arfa, and Coloccini are out either injured or suspended. Barton, Nolan and Guthrie all doubtful through injury.

Could be a good time to play them.

Pretty much agree then.

Probably wouldn't start Cole though Kuyt's been poor in his last games.

good they were piss last match, with Taylor and Guthrie out it could be worse - however they're much better at home

if theres a team to try gerrard and meireles against its probably newcastle with a weakened midfield

Yes. A bit hard on Maxi perhaps, but I doubt it would make much, if any, difference to him were he to play over on the left instead.

He's been more effective on the left so far this season, hasn't he? Seems to link well with the strikers there.

He does, but I actually think he's been more effective generally than last season, independently of the question of which side he plays on.

Take StevieG out of there. Hes injured

I think we should beat them.

They'll be a lot of uncertainty at the club at the moment and we have to use that to our advantage. We've got to go out there and play as we did against Spurs, but this time take our bloody chances.

Liverpool FC manager Roy Hodgson speaks ahead of Newcastle clash

"The good thing is that Raul Meireles is a very all round player. He's not got his feet nailed down to one position. Lucas is more a player who play centrally. Raul, I've used him wide before, it's gone well. It'll go well again if I chose to do that 😱, but also the same applies to Steven Gerrard, a player who's quite comfortable playing in a central two, he's also quite comfortable playing up front or behind the front player... ..."

Provisional squad: Reina, Johnson, Skrtel, Kyrgiakos, Konchesky, Lucas, Meireles, Kuyt, Rodriguez, Torres, Ngog, Jones, Aurelio, Kelly, Poulsen, Jovanovic, Cole, Babel, Shelvey

Roy is a clown is thinks of moving Meireles. Raul ran the show form the middle and was constantly on the ball. He is the closest thing we've found to a replacement for Xabi Alonso so I'll crack up to see him doing a 'job' on the right.
