Liverpool related transfer speculation

The drawback to Kane for me isn't anything to do with cost or salary, it is that he is past his peak and we'd need to replace him in 1 or 2 seasons time. That might be ok if we are investing properly elsewhere (given we are linked to defenders, this feels like we are) then that might be a wise 'safe bet' but the reason his level looks to have 'maintained' is that he's going into a piss easy league.

Slot would want him pressing from the front a lot, and I don't know if that is still part of his game.
 
I don't see the point of all these signings if we lose Mo, Virg, Trent, Konate and anyone who is valuable and is going to be out of contract soon.

If the club has a problem with paying the big salaries, then we are just going to be going around in circles I'm afraid.

I don’t think the club has a problem with it as such - the target number is 70% of our turnover and within that there’s a level of risk around CL income, which is significant.

I assume we mitigate that risk somewhat by basic salary and then incentivised increases for those involved in the squad based in income for qualifying and progressing.

It’s then really just doing to numbers and counting and nothing to do with the club management at all.

Unless we want to be the financial cheating cunts we accuse City of being.

We have the second or third highest wage bill in the PL. I bet for non state sponsored clubs who spend only what they make, we may have close to the highest wage bill in Europe. Not sure, how we can be accused of not paying the big salaries.
 
Given Bradley's injury record, can we really gamble on a kid with 18 appearances under his belt in Portugal?

I'd need some convincing.
 
Gosh, I want Connor Bradley to be a starting option to but the levels of rating on here especially Trent has confirmed practically almost what we know has gone new levels.
I just want us to sign someone whom is able to RB to a decent level and to be fit and available for next season.

Depends on how old and whether they expect to be first choice.

We don’t tend to sign players over the age of 27 very often.

If we signed a “in his prime” RB, would you be at all surprised if Bradley stalled on signing a contract and considered his options?

Bradders turns 22 in the summer. I wouldn't mind someone between 25-27 with more experience if we're looking for a first choice RB.

He's in no position to demand a first choice spot considering his injury history.
He'll just have to fight for his place like the majority of the players in the squad currently are.

His current contract expires in 2027. No chance he won't sign a new contract.

Just re-think that a little bit.

He’s 22, so this is the point in his career when he’d want to be nailing down a starting position - not being a backup.

If we sign someone in their prime, they’d better be good and capable of holding down a starting position in a top tier team - otherwise why bother - it’ll be another Tsimikas scenario were we spend all the time complaining he’s not good enough and should be sold.

If we do sign someone in their prime, what’s the incentive for Bradley to sign another contract, because if he’s not playing regularly from here on, that’s no good for him and he’d be as well thinking hard about whether his future lies elsewhere.

It’s almost similar to Kelleher and it would be the same if Trent did re-sign.

You’d only have to look at Neco Williams to see how it’s be potentially better to walk away than stay.

The other side of it is, if we are going to re-sign him, what sort of contract do you think he’d be looking for - you reckon he’s not going to ask for money in the £100k range?

No clue on the detail of our wage bill but that doesn't mean we are paying the big salaries as the reality is showing. Perhaps we have been overpaying squad players who are not worth their weight inflating the entire bill? Perhaps as a big club we should be trying to attract players on a free and in their prime like Real is, albeit a slightly lower tier of players who are willing to come?

The point I am trying to make is, something is wrong with our wage structure, we let players run down their contract likely due to us not paying them the wages they can get elsewhere. Trent leaves, with Konate potentially leaving, are we confident of keeping Grav, Macca, Cody, Szobo when the time comes? Until we find that balance of being a big club and paying the correct wages with a forward looking process, anyone we bring in will likely leave for bigger money after they become successful because we are not willing or unable to pay.

What I like about someone like Aina is that Aina is a lot more defensive minded, Bradley a lot more attacking. Bradley can't / won't / shouldn't be looked at to suddenly play 50 games a season as his body would break. Having someone in a different style would work well as we can tailor it by opponent.

The challenge to expecting Bradley to become out first choice is whether he is up to that challenge physically yet. I hope he is, but if he needs another year or so to work up to that level then we need a second choice who is reliable and good quality.

I think it’s pretty clear where the issue is - the ball was dropped the minute Ward left the club until the appointment of Hughes - as we know he’s been involved in contract discussions with Trent, Mo, Virgil, Konate & Bradley at least.

It’s also worth noting that Klopp told FSG of his decision to leave in Nov 2023.

Everything seems to have ground to a hault - with no-one having responsibility to get new contracts done around that period.

I can’t help but think we have yet to hear the full story of why Ward left so soon after replacing Edwards, why it took so long to replace him and ultimately why Klopp decided to go early.

I see Bradley in the Curtis Jones bracket. He's decent and maybe has another level to climb but we can't afford to bank on it not in the least due to perceived injury proneness. In midfield, we signed Gravy, Macca and Szobo. Jones is still here. If Bradley wants to leave, it is what it is... we've got to do what's right for the team first and foremost and that is signing as good a player as we can.

Hopefully Hughes is thinking along similar lines.

Neco is a bad example, he wasn't good enough and we had Gomez and maybe even Milner covering that position at the time.

Also what's the incentive to sign anyone then?
We should have 11 senior players and 11 youth players then.

I don't see why Bradley would leave if we sign Aina for instance.
 
I would say there is zero chance Bradley wants to leave. He managed to impress on majority of his appearances when an understudy to a guy who for 2 - 3 seasons was the best RB in the world. He scored his superb goal against Chelsea which made us all take note. He absolutely pocketed Mbappe and he's going to get a PL winners medal this year.

If he has a true elite sportsman mentality, he will absolutely be out to demonstrate that he is the successor to Trent whether someone else comes in or not. He can't be dumb enough to think that we would lose a RB and not add anyone else, given Gomez is still a crock.

I have faith in the Bradders long term, but I do think he might be a bit rotated next year to manage his ability to play consistently across so many games.

We did, but that 2-3 years ago. We didn't know how good Bradley would become.
