I can handle the lack of new signings last summer, but not the lack of them in January.
Add in the lack of progress in the talks with the three amigos.
Add in the feeling they are trying to win the league on a shoestring. I think it is a fair point that they bought something for $400M and it's now worth $4BN, and a little investment would be more acceptable than not.
Ah, Anelka was superb during his six months with us. If not for Gerard's otherwise splendid judgement of a player's ability and character being affected after cheating death in that operating room, Anelka would have played in Red for many years.

I don't know whether it's true but there were rumours that having to deal with Anelka's good-for-nothing brother/agent was the main reason why GH passed on the player. Also heard that even Patrice Bergues was amazed at the decision. Fully agree Anelka was mustard during that half-season or so - his performance in the Newcastle game at Anfield was one of the best individual LFC displays I can ever remember.

If felt at the time that Anelka had failed to settle at other clubs because of the team-mates he'd been alongside - basically prima donnas at Arsenal and Real. Then suddenly he's with a Liverpool squad that was mostly made up of good professionals and working class lads done good. He would've fit in with us.
And I'd rather have had to manage his brother / agent (a background figure) than deal with Diouf, who was a massive egotist and, let's face it, shit at putting the ball in the net.
