Liverpool related transfer speculation

I can handle the lack of new signings last summer, but not the lack of them in January.

Add in the lack of progress in the talks with the three amigos.

Add in the feeling they are trying to win the league on a shoestring. I think it is a fair point that they bought something for $400M and it's now worth $4BN, and a little investment would be more acceptable than not.

And I'm a fan of FSG

Ah, Anelka was superb during his six months with us. If not for Gerard's otherwise splendid judgement of a player's ability and character being affected after cheating death in that operating room, Anelka would have played in Red for many years.

I don't know whether it's true but there were rumours that having to deal with Anelka's good-for-nothing brother/agent was the main reason why GH passed on the player. Also heard that even Patrice Bergues was amazed at the decision. Fully agree Anelka was mustard during that half-season or so - his performance in the Newcastle game at Anfield was one of the best individual LFC displays I can ever remember.

Yes, good point re the brother/agent. That said, this would have been more than preferable compared to the abomination that was El Hadji Diouf.

If felt at the time that Anelka had failed to settle at other clubs because of the team-mates he'd been alongside - basically prima donnas at Arsenal and Real. Then suddenly he's with a Liverpool squad that was mostly made up of good professionals and working class lads done good. He would've fit in with us.
And I'd rather have had to manage his brother / agent (a background figure) than deal with Diouf, who was a massive egotist and, let's face it, shit at putting the ball in the net.

The complete lack of effort that went into scouting Diouf’s character and background always felt particularly damning. Even the very best managers or sporting directors occasionally misjudge a player’s ability, level, or fit for the system. However, there is never an excuse for failing to conduct thorough character checks and proper due diligence.

I bet Phil Thomson could have rang Dioufs own mother and she would have confirmed he was a cunt and apologised for spawning him.

Houllier was a stubborn and dumb mule at times.

Not one, but two !

Salif Diao and EH Diouf.

We've come a longggg way haven't we ?

Oh, summer of tinkering you say

Good thing this season's a write off and we've nothing to play for, otherwise acknowledging that mid season might show GROSS mismanagement

What's that...oh, we're competing on multiple fronts with a squad that people in the club admit isn't good enough?

Well

Ok then.

Shame January has already passed so we could try and sort some of our issues early, as we have in the past with the likes of Diaz and gakpo.

What's that?

It's the 18th of Jan?

Oh

100 motherfucking percent.
Honestly, I don't think the club is interested in winning, we'll it's not the main priority.
Only time we buy is when there's some kind of panic.
Another team wants a player on our list?
Our midfield suddenly dies?
We finish fifth?

- Fire up the jet, Johnson!

Can we fuck off with this not interested in winning bull shit?

Beamy has said that those in charge of running the club want to win.

It’s not a pop at you Modo, but it’s repeated time and time again and someone who knows the inner runnings of the club says the opposite on more than one occasion.

I said in the summer left back was our biggest concern. It still is. Also relying on Jota and Donkey.

The reality is we have a very good squad that puts us as one of the best sides in the world. We just need to swap out people for others who are a. good enough to play for us, b. available and c. want to come here.

We have two international standard players in every position with several international captains.

You lot need to be more Viking and less pussy.

That first bit would fit with another piece of scuttlebutt at the time, which was that Anelka was so keen to stay that he offered to sign a permanent deal for lower wages than those he was on with the initial six-month contract. If we'd kept him I reckon we could have won the title next season and who knows how often after that. The whole thing was GH's first serious blunder.

Well obviously it's hyperbole, which club isn't interested in winning?

I just think our interest in winning comes with caveats. Too many caveats.

Because we should have another striker and Nunez apparently is a non-entity.
Jota dies every two weeks.
Diaz is a winger.
Something's gotta give.

Can't keep waiting until the next season. We did it last year and lost everything. Except the fucking league cup.

Wanting to win - there is saying and there is doing...

we are decent though, but should keep building and improving

not quite sure what’s happening with him now he’s been recalled but i said start of the season I’d love Chalobah.

He went to palace and became their best CB. Now Chelsea have recalled him. If we could get him on a free, I’d be all over it. If he were available for £10m this window, likewise.
