Liverpool related transfer speculation

Yes, if something was getting done, it would have got done by now.
The only transfer news we're getting this month is about outgoing loans at the end of the month because we want to see what the injury situation is before we dump McConnell, Danns, Morton etc.
Or if it does get done it will be some broken player who we get on loan who will spend half the season on the treatment table.

Remember when we got Kabak and Ben Davies because we shit ourselves last minute

This may happen again

Pretty laughable that they are splashing the cash ahead of the outcome of 115, let's face it, nothing's going to happen to them. Hopefully these three players become forever associated with that time Pep split up with his wife and had a mental breakdown.

OK, in the hope that it will stop everyone slitting their wrists that we haven't spent half a billion quid overpaying for players who may or may not be good enough... Don't shoot the messenger if this doesn't happen but...
The Premier League pays clubs various sums on account of the media deal at various points through the year in a system that is referred to as "stabilised cash-flow". Think of it as being like when your Dad or Grandad used to give your Mum / Nan a weekly allowance to manage the household bills and shopping. They don't give it all out in one go so clubs don't go mental, spend it all, and then plead poverty a month or two later. They drop it at various points during the year when the normal profile of club cash-flow means things get a bit tight.
One of those times is January (or it certainly used to be) but they pay it mid-month. We'd had to tell the footballing guys to hold off on doing deals, or to negotiate a little longer to pay until after the PL money had dropped. It's possible that's what's going on here, but given the size of our bank facilities I'd be surprised if we had to wait this long as they should stretch to borrowing a little bit for a week or two.
But chances are if we were going to do a deal in January, then it would probably never have been on January 1st.
And the failure to resolve the three contracts will be a factor too, as it means we don't know precisely how much we have to spend. That needs sorting, one way or the other.
If anyone wants me to go over the ups and downs of the cash-flow profile then let me know. But as a guide, think about how much this will swing in a transfer window, or in the season ticket renewal period, for example, and also how income drops off over the close season.
Even buying from British clubs v overseas clubs can introduce big cash flow swings because of short-term cash-flows from VAT (sales tax for non-UK readers). In the UK, you have to pay the VAT on the entire transfer fee (not just the first instalment) to the selling club (typically within 7 days from the date of the deal), and you could potentially then have to wait up to 3 months to claw that back through your quarterly payment on filing your return. So for a £60m transfer, you're £12m out of pocket for a month or two, compared to buying from overseas.

Our analytics have revealed that the best course of action is to release approximately 437.5 grams of liquified feces into our special watching briefs.

As if we make stupid decisions based on inflexibility. We money ballin.

@Beamrider doing the samaritans work

I appreciate this, but clearly it’s the poor results that highlight what we all know we’re lacking. Jota is now a doubt for Brentford, and we all saw what a difference having a decent striker does in the Forest game. I think it’s okay to ask questions when your only signing for what will be 3 windows is an Italian that’s played about 34 minutes total all season.

Samaritans is a good analogy. I'm not promising life will get better, I'm just trying to talk you all down from the bridge.

Yeah, I agree that we should make moves in this window and I've said so a few times in the last week or two. First-teamers if they're available, extra legs to ease the burden on the current squad if not.
But January is a difficult market. We've been lucky historically in that we made some significant signings in January - Coutinho, Sturrridge, Suarez (but Carroll too), Virgil (although he was really a delayed summer signing) and most recently Diaz and Gakpo (who were supposedly planned signings for the following summer). But we've also made some duff signings as well. I think Kabak gets more stick than he deserves. The lad did his best but he wasn't much better than what we had in reserve.
The kind of signing I think we need now is an Anelka type, even if only on loan for 6 months. He came in during the January window and gave us the extra impetus we needed to go on and win the Cup Treble. That we then binned him off to sign Diouf, presumably because we thought Anelka would be too much trouble, still infuriates me. Anelka was made for us back then. Not sure who the equivalent would be now.
But the point of my post was that if we were going to make a move in this window, it was unlikely to have been early. Don't give up hope, but it is hope, not expectation.

I hope you’re right mate. Just hoping we’re not all having pints at the O.K. Corral telling each other “Someone will be showing up any minute”

Forget about signing players, we can't even keep the ones we currently own.

I think it's been an eternity since we signed anyone substantial? Even when we shipped out 40-50m in Fabio and SVDB we are still skint.

We are currently on the top of the league and the CL. It will be good to have a reinforcement or two, every bit helps.
When the big 3 leave at the end of the season, and the other clubs know we are desperate, we will be fleeced all the same.
So why not try to do something they will have to do anyway, 6 months earlier?

Do they actually want to win or not? It's baffling.

Kinda sick and tired of expressing the same views season in season out , I'mma just do what I am better at - cut and paste.

(Fingers crossed, I hope point no. 3 of we are not, won't happen this season).

Maybe we could get our money back by charging kids to ride around on Darwin’s back for a few minutes before games at Anfield…
He will only drop them and we have to issue refunds.

But now, we are seeming letting contracts run down on players whom we are actively trying to renew. This feels new.

I haven't seen anything indicating we've inquired but Osimhen on a 6 month loan would seem to tick some boxes here.

totally agree, i don’t think we’re proactive enough but at the same time we have to judge edwards, hughes and co over a longer period when they’ve laid their own foundations but it’s not looking any different at the moment.

the counter argument is kind of easy to make as well… we’re top of everything currently but we’re making such hard work of it and others have left the door open this season

hopefully we’ve got enough to do it this season
