People forget that Di Matteo "won" the Champions League after AVB had already qualified them out of their group.

He effectively won the knockout part of the comp playing defensive, counter-attacking, heavily reliant on Drogba football. That doesn't work in league comps if you want to win anything, hence their league performance was fairly shite last year.

I very much doubt, given the evidence of Di Matteos poor effort in the group stages this year, that he'd have had them winning if in charge al last year.
