Left back - who would you buy?

So with Insua on his way for the princely sum of 5m we're left with no recognised left-backs. It's probably fair to assume that Woy will have the Insua fee plus a bit extra (from other sales or a chunk of Masher money), say 8-10m to spend.

If you were Woy (or Cecil), who would you buy? Would you split the money and buy two left-backs, or rely on Agger/Kelly etc as cover?

I'd be happy enough with Figueroa for 7m odd, use Kelly/Agger as cover, and put the extra (+ Babel cash) towards a striker/ (+Riera cash) towards Turan.

I was also impressed by Perreira of Uruguay. He's primarily a right-back, but played at left-back in their opening game against France and was man of the match for me. Felipe of Depor was superb in the first half of last season too.

He's going to buy Figueroa from Wigan

Most probably. But more importantly, who would you buy?

Ideally Gibbs from the Arse, but can't see that, a halfdecent cheap one, Illunga.

We have certainly been linked with Illunga once or twice

Coentrao in a straight swap with Plessis.

Then Taiwo - he really impressed against us at least.

If that doesn't work out then perhaps the Argentina sub during the WC. Rodriguez perhaps?

And then there's Oscar Wendt from FC Copenhagen. He'd come rather cheap and as I reckon we should have decent cover I'd bring him in as well. Roy knows of him.

Felipe from Deportivo.

Disappointed not to see him feature at all in the World Cup.

Yeah, I was gutted. He was on my list of defenders I was really keen to see play

Give Benefica 5 mill + Plessis

I've only really seen him for Portugal, but he looks like a very gifted player. Eliminate a problem spot for us.

Didn't we have like 4 left backs 5 minutes ago? Couldn't we have just transplanted Doss's ankles onto Aurelio?

What is his build. The right build is very important for a full-back.

I like mine "wiry".

I'm not sure that'll suffice mate but yeah he really looked hot on heels but as with you I've only seen him for Portugal.

He's most certainly going to end up at Madrid however.

He's a cracking player Brendan. He broke his leg in Janruary only to return in 3-4 months and went on to make the Brazil world cup squad. So yes I was looking forward to seeing him play.

Why not just stick to the Woy bashing eh?

I'd say a mixture of Vieira and Petit.

Slender and midget-like.

And fast as a racehorse.

The world doesnt seem to be full of quality left backs..

Taiwoo would be a good option..

It might be worth looking at right backs with decent ability with both feet.

Its a shame we dont have someone like Arbeloa on our books that is so flexible and reliable.

As someone has already mentioned Kelly could perhaps be an option as well.

He looked so promising in his few cameos last Seasons that I think it's fair to have got high hopes for his future.

LB was a gaping hole in our team last season, since when we've lost/sold both our first-choice LBs. So we need to sign two replacements, even if it means spending half the Mascher money.

Taiwo (£8m): big, solid, fast, tough-tackling, bit headless at times, but I like the way he crunches people.

Trémoulinas (£8m): slim, fast, skilful, very attacking, slightly dodgy in the air and a bit lightweight perhaps, but he's great going forward and has a very good cross. Could play LB against the shit teams and LW against the better teams.

Obviously the French league is the one I know best. I'm sure there must be other good options in Spain, Portugal, Germany etc.

Tremoulinas is a good shout.

I almost forgot, David Luiz from Benfica.

He was awesome against us and can play both as a central defender and at left back. Especially at Anfield he was almost their most attacking player bar Cardozo.

At home one play stood out as he simply outran Torres over half a pitch.

Would be the buy of the summer but probably out of our league.

Too injury prone to be relied on as a 2nd choice left back.
