Martin Kelly believes he’s finally ready to compete for a first-team place at Liverpool FC.

The 23-year-old defender has been battling to regain full fitness since rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee against Manchester United in September 2012. Kelly returned to training back in pre-season but it has taken until now for him to get back to the required level to handle the demands of Premier League football. The Academy graduate made his third substitute appearance of the campaign against West Ham at Anfield last Saturday and played for the under 21s earlier this week too . He is hoping there will be more opportunities to shine over the festive period.

“It was a good chance for me to get some minutes,” Kelly told the ECHO. “I’m feeling a lot sharper. I’ve been doing some additional training over the past few weeks and I’m ready to push on. “It has taken longer than I hoped to get back to this level but that’s been brought on by us not being in the Europa League or having much of a run in the League Cup. “It’s been difficult to get game time as the manager has to pick his best XI to start every game “I was just made up to get on against West Ham and now I need to keep progressing. I’ve been working hard and I feel a lot fitter than back in pre-season. “I don’t think there’s been a mental barrier to get through as such, it’s more about not feeling as sharp as I wanted. “Ask anyone who has had a long-term injury and they’ll tell you it’s tough to get back to that level you were at before the injury. “It takes time and it comes back slowly. Now I’m back nearly to peak fitness and I’m ready to go.”

Whiston-born Kelly replaced Jon Flanagan for the final 11 minutes against the Hammers as he filled in at left-back. Most of his 57 appearances for the Reds have been on the other flank but he’s content to play wherever Brendan Rodgers needs him. “I am happy playing anywhere across the back four for Liverpool,” he added. “I’ll just concentrate on my own fitness and do all the extra work I can. “It’s a case of biding my time, being patient and making sure that when the manager gives me another opportunity I am ready to take it.”

Rodgers’ squad has been depleted by injuries to Daniel Sturridge, Jose Enrique and captain Steven Gerrard, while Jordan Henderson is battling to overcome a badly bruised ankle ahead of Sunday’s trip to Tottenham. However, with spirits high following back to back wins over Norwich and West Ham, Kelly believes the Reds can maintain momentum. “It’s a big one next weekend and we’re all concentrating on that,” he said. “It will be a test of the squad, but we have got the depth to cope with that. Everyone is competing for places and there is healthy competition. “The spirit is good. The Christmas period will test our character but we definitely have the mental strength to get through it.”

I hope he's right. It was painful watching him earlier in the season, he looked as though he was never going to be truly fit again.

I think that if he could stay fit throughout this season, next season he should be given a chance at CB, who knows, maybe he could clame it his own next season.

We don't need any more CB's! We need to get rid of some. He might be decent competition for Johnson though which is good.

Why though?
He's built like a brick and maybe, just maybe, next season he could form a partnership with Sakho and that way we wouldn't have to worry whether it'd be Skrtel or Agger that fuck up this time.
I know it probably won't happen...but it'd be nice if it did.

Ha yeah at the moment it seems like it but in all seriousness Kelly's a big lad and I said it'd be nice even though I know it probably wouldn't happen.

I have a feeling that out of our 2 young CB/RBs, Wisdom will find his best position at CB and Kelly at RB.

When he played at the start of last season he was pretty consistent and reliable which you can't say about Wisdom and I remeber thinking he should be given a chance at CB.

I know what you mean, I just think he's well down the pecking order for central defense. I know it's an idea that's always been mentioned on here, but it's only something he's done in practice at reserve level. We do need a right footer for the long term though, but I guess that's where Illori or Wisdom might come in.

It is sad how everyone gave up on Skrtel long-term and how Sakho limited Agger's long term position just because he's a leftie too.

It is, and arguably both have a part to play, but at their age, neither of them have nailed their place in the team by showing enough consistency, so their positions and futures are rightly open.

I see way more potential in him than Wisdom, which I'm sure a lot of people would disagree with, but his height, pace, and the fact he's come through our youth, suffered a lot of injuries, but at a great age now gives me hope that he might be able to make it.
Much, much, much prefer him to Flannagan if that means anything.

I don't really. The thing with Wisdom is he's clearly not a right back, Kelly had the hit-and-run pace to get by in that position, he'd knock it down the wing, run onto it and try to whip a ball in, whereas Wisdom looked suspect in tight areas, but when you put him at centre back, he's a different proposition bringing the ball forward and looks far more at ease technically.

Kelly just seems alot less subtle in many respects and for all his pace bailing him out at fullback, his positional sense makes Johnson look like Marcus Babbel. There were too many games where he was getting found out and leaving gaping holes between the right hand side and centre back. Wisdom just made mistakes because he was clearly incredibly uncomfortable there. Longterm I think Wisdom has all the raw attributes of a big commanding centre back. I've not seen enough of Kelly there to make a judgement as of yet, but time is pushing on for him and as I said, as a fullback he's not quite as good as his mobility from that position suggests.

Flanno is quite Carra-like I guess, though his technical ability has come on loads in the last few years, he's a defender first and foremost and it's perhaps afforded us that ability again to have one of the fullbacks tucking in as a third defender in the centre when needed. Something we've lacked since Rafa's Arbeloa/Finnan days. You lose something going forward but it's given us that extra solidity on that side.

But wingers have been skipping past Flanno with ease over the last two games...

I don't remember much going down his side against West Ham. Like I said in another thread, players have been rampaging down our right handside for years, but no one seems arsed, coz yer know, Johnson's good when we have the ball.

I see far more in Wisdom than Kelly.

Time will tell I guess, and certainly neither of them look bad players - there's talent there in both of them - but I guess from what I've seen of Wisdom, he looks an absolutely outstanding prospect.

I used to have great faith in Wisdom and Kelly maturing into CBs for us but Ilori has blown that out of the water. He's the new Lawro, a huge prospect with great skill, great temperament, and I can't see anyone stopping him from becoming a regular CB for years to come. It's one place up for grabs now IMHO.

Good to hear that.

From what I've heard he's been physically fit for ages. It's been the mental worry of getting injured again that's been the problem.

Johnson's ridiculously poor at stopping those crosses coming in, but you should also recognize the importance of his involvement when we have the ball. It would have been brilliant had he become a top defender, but looks like he never will. So it's about the balance of what he offers. And when he was out this season you could really see how much we missed him by having no width on the right, and even on the rare occasions our rb got forward, could do fuck all with it.
Same thing with Enrique being out of the team on the left, as him, Coutinho and Suarez have often combined brilliantly in attack (and no one gets past Enrique on the left, though poor marking/concentration is his major downfall).
Kelly's solid enough as a defender but also offers pace and is an outlet down the wing, so I'd much rather see him there than Flannagan. Would be different if Flanno was as good at defending as Carra was as a side back, but he clearly isn't.

that's low. if you're description of magic was right we would be having a the konchesky rb equivalent in our team for the last few years. you have a serious agenda against magic, which makes you come out with irrational statements.
