Is it time to cash in on Lucas?

Lucas was 29 this week. Now, many people reckon that 28-30 is often the "prime" age for a footballer, especially in midfield, as experience is allied with peak physical fitness.

But I think perhaps we have already seen the very best of him, he's been here since he was 21 or so. It seems clear that he is not a first XI player under Klopp, with Henderson, Can and Milner all ahead of him in battle for midfield places, and even Allen is getting on before him.

At 29 he has one more move in him, and this is the time when we could demand the highest transfer fee, maybe up to £5m, so should we cash in now, before age takes its toll, and we see a sadly declining force, as we witnessed with Steven Gerrard.

Should we be brave and let him go now, in order to allow Grujic and other players a chance to sit on the bench?

For the amount of money we'd get, it hardly seems worth it. He's capable of coming in from the cold and putting in a good performance, so he's useful in that sense as a squaddie. That's all though, despite the "thinking mans footballer" pretentious bullshit that someone will inevitibly come out with.

Not until we've given him a new contract with a huge release clause.

Surely never having another thread on him would make it worth it?

I think he still has something to offer us and has had a few decent games this year. Milner, Henderson and Can will and should be the midfield mostly in the future, but they can't play every game and Henderson may need some time out here and there with his heel issue. With one year left on his deal in the summer would anybody offer more than a couple of million for him? 4 million or more sell, less then keep him around as a squad player and let him see out his contract.

I was surprised that the thread title didnt have Lucarse in it...

Weren't we offered 3 mill £ or something this summer, or a loan move? He's worth fuck all sadly. I'd sell him this summer as he just isnt good enough.

Lucas is worth more to us as a useful squaddie than exchanging him for the handful of coins we'd be offered for him. Wonderman stays.

I don't think the process will even have to be initiated by the club. He'll probably push for a move at the end of the season if he's starting on the bench for most games from now till May. I think this has happened for two transfer windows - or at least there were stories about it - and each time we had a timely injury that conveniently opened up a spot for him to start more games and keep him happy.

I'm not sure there will be a third time though. Klopp has shown in his recent selections since Milner and Henderson returned that he'd prefer his CMs to be versatile and effective on both sides of the pitch. I think he'll be off in the summer; he probably won't want to hang around for the last year of his contract warming the bench (or worse still, not in the matchday squad).

Someone should make a 'scouse boom-bust cycle' diagram as it pertains to predicting the downfall of Lucas.

This is the year!!!

Good post. I'm sure you're right about Klopp wanting his midfielders to be all-rounders and TBF Rodgers did too. The problem is that doing without a DM is a bit of a luxury when your defence is as inconsistent as ours has been for some time now. Hopefully Klopp's factored that into his planning.

Ha, nice tongue in cheek thread.

I'll give a serious answer while I'm here sure. There is no point selling Lucas. We'd only get about 5 million tops and he is handy to have around the place. He can still do a competent job in the middle for us and he's excellent at welcoming the new south Americans.

@Arn would go into meltdown of he was here now

Allen and Lucas both need to be sold, but only when better players have been in brought in to replace them

A playmaker and a solid DM please
