That Ireland performance was woeful last night.

But then - in the Charlton days he had a team built around players from Liverpool, Arsenal, Utd & Everton (then), now the key players are from West Brom, LA Galaxy & Everton (now)

And Charlton supporters still defended him playing long ball saying he didn't have the quality in the team to do otherwise ...

Admittedly England were playing the equivalent of a County FA team last night, but that was a good all-round display from Lambert. As well as being on the spot to score, he played others in around him very nicely.

Suarez scored twice (one pen.) to lead Uruguay to a 1:2 win @Peru.
The lad was looking hungry. 2 more games and he's back!

That's some squad, certainly, but they've had decent squads before and not achieved anything with them. It'll be interesting to see how they go in the next Euros.

And Company wasn't there either.
They've been doing some good work there over the last few years.

It's been a long time since they last had a quality squad. I think you may have to go all the way back to thed days of Pfaff, Gerets, Van Der Elst Vercauteren, Scifo, Ceulemans et al. And that squad did not win any trophy but got them to the semi final of Mexico 1986 where theywere beaten by Maradona.

That Belgium squad is stupendous for the size of the country - as Holland's always is, of course. People always go on about Germany's achievement in producing their current standard of player, but they've got about 8 times as many people as Belgium.

Would be lovely if they could do something at the World Cup next year.

Witsel is a very interesting player, had not realised he went for 32.5m!!!

Anyone know his natural position? DM/CM?

The Football Association have announced Daniel Sturridge will not be fit for England's World Cup qualifier with Ukraine on Tuesday.

The Liverpool striker missed Friday's win over Moldova after returning to Melwood to undergo treatment on a thigh injury.

England had hoped to include Sturridge in the travelling party for the trip to Ukraine, but he'll instead now remain on Merseyside.

An FA statement read: "The FA can confirm that Daniel Sturridge will not return to the England squad ahead of the World Cup qualifier with Ukraine on Tuesday.

"Club England medical staff have been in constant contact with their counterparts at Liverpool Football Club since he returned there on Thursday, his injury has not progressed as had been hoped and it is now clear that Sturridge will not be fit for the match in Kiev on Tuesday evening.

"No additions will be made to Roy Hodgson's squad of 23 players who travel to Ukraine on Sunday evening."

I forgot we've got Moses there. Makes me feel an eensy bit better about the possible lack of Studge.

Not a fan of the "no run-up" style myself. You can't possibly generate maximum power in the shot. The keeper nearly saved the one in that clip above.

Which Clip? Moses penalty? The keeper only started moving when the ball hit the net (see the replays ~1:00)...

Back to England. How good was Stevies goal. Awesome. When I'm in pubs watching England he genuinely gets a lot of respect from most England fans. He has been the only golden generation man who has played consistently well for his country. He bossed that game.

pause on 1:06 and see that the goalie has barely moved and the ball has crossed the line ... he's as close to saving it as the middle east is to peace.

That keeper is shit too. That attempt at saving the penalty looked amateurish.

Does that not make him a cunt in your book, Modo?
Must be at least as bad as biting an opponent.
