No arguments from me with regards to Yossi. The way he was managed last season was criminal, particularly given his good start to the season. However we were very short on the left given injuries and the rather bizarre Riera situation. I would've shifted things about and perhaps even played Dirk there, but the choice was basically Babel or a player out of position. Complaints would've followed no matter what.

Anyways, Rafa's downfall ultimately came from his failings in the transfer market more than anything else. Hodgsons and Purslows biggest challenge right now is to patch up the squad as best they can with the finances available. It's a lot easier to let the players go out and play if you've got the right ones to pick from (stating the obvious here, I know).

Or alternatively Rafa could have done the obvious - fine him a couple of weeks wages and put Riera on the left, or sell him in January and get in a decent replacement.

No-nonsense = English?

We've been down the high-profile 'Premiership proven' route before, with Ince and more recently the likes of Keane and Bellamy

It's hit and miss

I think there are issues Bren, like wives not being able to settle, and perhaps a yearning for the Mediterranean climate when you have to travel to Sunderland for an evening kick off in February.

The wives not being able to settle in Machers case is pure bunkum, how many of our football team are Spanish speaking? Just checking his wife is indeed from a spanish speaking country, I'm 99% certain she is.

Fine. I don't disagree with that. We were having a shit season and we could've used him (although who knows the extent of the fallout behind the scenes).

Anyways, we all know that Rafa had a bad season last year and we all know he made mistakes. If you want to argue that he spent the last couple years constantly playing people out of position and employing mad tactics, I'll leave you all to it.

I've probably been the longest proclaimed admirer of Hodgson on these boards, and whilst I have been encouraged by the start he has made, the only place for judgement will be at the end of the season.

If he gets us back into the Champions League, it will have been a brilliant turnaround given the fierce competition around.
