Just checking if I have my totally rose-colored, homer glasses on, but I was talking with a Scum fan about their proposed Sneijder deal, and an argument erupted when he said that Sneijder is better than any of our midfield players. I replied with "Yes... everyone except Steven Gerrard, obviously." Is this even an argument? Yeah our captain has had injury problems, and Sneijder's star is on the rise, and maybe I'm overrating his past seasons and legacy, but Gerrard is a world-beater and will be remembered long after he's gone, I just don't put Sneijder in the same class as him. Am I wrong?
[/quote]

No you are not.

Unfortunately England's lack of success has really damaged the reputation of Gerrard and Lampard. Both of them, Gerrard especially, deserves to be mentioned in the top 3 or 4 CMs the game has seen in the last 15 years, but unfortunately he won't be remembered as such....ho hum.

For nearly 10 years, i wouldn't have picked any other midfielder for Liverpool before him. He will win that Title for us. I'm convinced. He has still got a lot of football to offer, and his game is well rounded to adapt to his loss of mobility...which i expect we will start seeing now. I'm very interested in seeing how he handles it.

I think Sneijder is a fantastic player; he was head and shoulders Inter's best player and his attitude of never, ever, ever being beaten is just awesome. Better than Gerrard - not yet and never will be unless something amazing happens. Putting aside out and out wingers, Kaka is the only player I've seen in the last 20 years to challenge our captain - and even then he fell short in a number of aspects.

The old adage of "good at many trades, master of none" holds Gerrard back. People think he can be an AM, CM, DM, RM, RB very well - not true. He can be the best in the world as a CM, AM and, I believe, RB. He's outstanding as a DM and RM. People underestimate how good he truly is as a playmaker, tackler and goalscorer. This and the failures of his club and country have reduced his standing in the eyes of many.

Dont think Utd will sign him for the follwing reasons

35 mill for a 27 year old

220k wages a week

Isnt a CM and Utd would have to accomodate their team after him.

Granero is a player I really like. Don't want him to go to Spurs (obviously) but at the same time it would be interesting to see how he would cope in the epl. I'd rather see us sign him than Downing (for 8m lesser!).

He's as much a CM as Scholes was.

Also, bear in mind that this a team that plays Giggs in the heart of midfield.

I love the BBC football gossip page today, they've suggested that if the Scum don't get Sneijder they're going for Hamsik who is nowhere near as good.

Sneijder hasnt played cm though, Scholes did that for Utd.

Sneijder has always been playing behind the strikers...

Even though they csn plsy him there the wages are the biggest problem imho.

Spot on 35m in transfers and then say 10m a year in wages for 5 years means a total outlay of 85m! Can't see this transfer happening. The time to get him was when he left Madrid, we should've accepted the deal offered by Real to swap Sneijder for Alonso plus cash! Shame really

Thanks lads, I was sure I wasn't alone in thinking that Stevie is still tops, I just felt like I was taking crazy pills.

Granero is an attacking midfielder and Downing is a left winger though.

He´s been playing all over the (attacking part of the) midfield.

Cattermole ready to quit Sunderland for Anfield after captaincy row

LIVERPOOL could be set to make a £10million move for Lee Cattermole with the Sunderland player devastated at losing the captaincy to new boy John OShea.

Black Cats boss Steve Bruce has handed his recent signing from Manchester United the armband, delivering a massive blow to the tenacious Cattermole.

And now the Merseysiders are keeping tabs as Kenny Dalglish continues his policy of signing top English players and the former Wigan midfielder, 23, could be next. There will be no lack of spice when Sunderland head to Anfield for the first match of the season on August 13. Bruce has signed three midfielders in Craig Gardner, David Vaughan and Seb Larsson plus young Irishman David Meyler meaning Cattermole may not even make the starting line-up.

He could also be reunited with old pal Jordan Henderson, who left Wearside to join the Reds last month.

Cattermole (right) found himself under fire last season because of his dire disciplinary record of TEN bookings and two sendings off including a dismissal in the opening game against Birmingham City. And, after this weeks tour of Germany, Bruce will announce OShea as his new skipper ahead of his fellow ex-United signing Wes Brown because of his superior fitness record.

Despite Sunderland bringing in no fewer than nine players in the close season, there could yet be more arrivals before the big kick-off. Heading for the exit will be right-back Marcos Angeleri, who is set to return home to Argentina.

Dalglish is also looking abroad for young talent and is poised to bid for young Swedish centre-half Alexander Milosevic rated at £1.5m by his club AIK Solna.

The Reds chief sent his top spies to check out the 19-year-old last week and have opened talks with his club about bringing him to Anfield.

Milosevic has played over a dozen times for AIK and the Kop want to snatch him now before ARSENAL and SUNDERLAND make their moves.

What a crock of shite. Cattermole?! Wont happen.

Milosevic is a full back no? Great article....

I thought Milosevic was a dead war criminal.

Couple of interesting statements from some journo on TalkSh!te earlier:

1. The Sneijder-to-ManUre deal is "destined to happen". The hold-up at the moment is because Inter are spinning things out in order to force ManUre to raise the fee.

2. The journo in question (didn't catch the name) wouldn't be surprised if both Fibreglass and Nasri are still Arse players next season.

I'm sure they said they would be the last time they spent that much money on someone that old.

Liverpool identify Uruguay international for £15million

Liverpool’s spending this summer seems set to continue as Uruguay international centre back, Diego Godin has emerged as a top target for Liverpool this summer. Liverpool were strongly linked with Phil Jones before the defender joined Manchester United and it is understood that the Reds are still in the market for a central defender.

Roy Evans came out and claimed that Liverpool still need a new centre back this summer in order to challenge this coming season. “I do feel we need to find a centre-back, as we seem a bit short at the back, and that’s a worry,” is what the former Liverpool manager said.

According to Fanatix, Godin is now a target for Liverpool and we would be up against Chelsea to try secure the 25-year-olds signature. Chelsea tried to sign Godin in the January transfer window but his club, Atletico Madrid refused to sell him and thus Chelsea had to sign David Luiz.

Atletico currently value Godin at £15million after they signed him for £6.6million last summer from Villarreal. There is also a suggestion that Poulsen could be part of the deal as the Danish midfielder would go to Atletico. This would be great news in my opinion as I think Poulsen is part of the dead wood that must leave Liverpool this summer.

If it comes down to race between Chelsea and Liverpool to sign Godin, I think we will have the upper hand. Luis Suarez could easily talk to Godin as they are international team mates and convince him to join him at Anfield. Godin may not walk straight into the Chelsea starting lineup as they have Terry and Luiz already whereas at Liverpool there is a huge fight to partner Carragher in central defence between Agger, Skrtel and Soto and it is a fight Godin may win.

Godin is very good actually. We have also been linked with Coates, another Uruguay centre back. 6"6 and decent on the deck aswell.

Liverpool have invited Mexican striker Marco Bueno over for a 10-day trial and are in talks over a potential five-year deal for the 17-year-old.

The Pachuca striker won the Under 17 World Cup with Mexico earlier this month.

Pachuca vice-president Andres Fassi said: "We are conducting negotiations with Liverpool and possibly, on August 1, Marco Bueno will pay a visit to Liverpool.

"We have already practically closed negotiations with them. They want to buy 100% of the rights.’’

Liverpool are hoping they have unearthed another striking gem after watching Bueno's follow Mexican Hernandez shine for Manchester United last season.

Anyone know how serious the link is between Arsenal and Ribery?

That would be an amazing signing for Arsenal and a distinct improvement on anyone they've had out wide since Pires IMO.
