Hodgson, we're over-staffed

We were unbelievably over-staffed when I came to the club and, if the truth be known, we still are over-staffed," Hodgson said.

"It was just as big a job making sure some of the players who never feature for the first team move on and that we limit our squad to players who are either in the frame to play first-team football or who have a bright future who are still anxious to play academy and reserve team football.

"We don't want that middle group who are too old for reserve football but are not serving any purpose for the first team because they never feature."

------------

I'm guessing it's bye bye, Darby, Spearing and everybody that's on loan.

I like it. It's old school 'see me in my office son' type management. No point pissing ££££ up the wall on the Degen's and El Zhar's of this world.

The fact that he's saying these things publicly suggests to me that he's trying to emphasise the fact that he's differentiating himself from Rafa's regime.

Another way of looking at it, if you want, is that Roy has been brought in as a yes man and the money men are busting chops to reduce costs wherever possible.

We had a redundant, absolutely useless youth system which we spent shitloads of money on.

There were all these stories about how our academy and reserve side had no integration. The result was a mess. So he's right.

It's a system which for the last few years has Insua as its crowning achievement.
Why wouldn't he do that? The regime was a complete fuck up in terms of players he brought in over the last 5/6 transfer windows. The club has too many (shit) players and needs to be trimmed. Roy is talking complete sense, again.

I see some of the usual cyber-mentalists are claiming that this statement is a move ploy designed to justify asset stripping.

Obvious stuff and about time a LFC manager said it.

As long as Torres stays fit we will be fine til Jan.

No we won't, and what exactly is going to happen in January with any certainty?

fair enough..

i think we probably had enough players for 4 reserve sides last year..

Silva
Ince
Ngoo
Ngog
Wisdom
Ayala
Suso
Palsson
Adojian
Kelly
Ecclesston
Amoo
Robinson
Pacheco
Bouzanis
Gullaci
Coady
Wilson
Shelvey
Saric

From what i have seen these should be the guys we should keep. I may have missed a few of the younger local lads that arent getting much coverage.

I like this from Hodgson, it might well be that in the process we lose some talented youngsters but at the same time their is nothing wrong with a bit of pressure on them to push on and challenge, we do need more coming through and this could well focus a few minds on their jobs...
Not really. Any sensible human being would try to get rid of players like Degen, El Zhar, Plessis and Insua because they are absolutely hopeless.

I case I've been misinterpreted, I don't believe that this is to do with asset stripping or Roy being a yes man, just pointing out that some people with an agenda will see it this way.

Ha yes, welcome Tuher, you must be one of the sites most spasmodic posters, over the last three years!! 😉

Kelly, Pacheco and Nemeth???

In fairness, Insua has more than likely played more first team games then those three put together.

Also, Tuher is bang on the money.

Rich or poor, it's pointless paying the wages of people like Degen, Voronin, Darby, Spearing, etc. It's such a waste for no return.

If a player is not in the first team squad by twenty then he should be shown the door.

And for that matter Amoo, Suso, Ince and Wisdom amongst others. A lot of work has been done to improve the Youth system over the past years and you could just as well argue that getting our hands on such fine looking prospects, like Suso, is part of the revenue.

Cue: Rome wasn't build in a day...

There are players who are late bloomers. That said, much as I rate Spearing, if he doesn't break into the first team fairly regularly this season it is time for him to go. Darby needs to go too.

Suso *will* get 1st team games this season, which at 16, is pretty exciting.

Its good he's getting rid of the dross. Rafa's buy 10 in the hope 1 turned good system was a shocking waste.

Plus, with only 25 allowed in the named squad, if you're not in the youth you're actually doing fuck all.

Don't forget Michael Ngoo, David Ngog (will be homegrown next year) and Nathan Ecclestone.
I'm quite sure that in 2-3 years time our first team will be full of home grown talent.
