Jesus wept. Two points immediately jump out at you from that piece - even ignoring the fact that he chose a keeper totally unsuited to our playing style.

There are 4-5 positions in the team that are almost always key to having a really top team, the spine. You can get away with somewhat 'steady-eddy' wingers, full backs, a midfielder or even one of your two CBs, however they always have at least :
one powerful CB (Ferdinand, Vidic, Terry, Kompany etc.),
one powerful dominant Midfielder (YaYa, Matic, Keane, Viera),
one attacking Midfielder (Silva, Lampard, Hazard, I'd class Rooney here too),
a top goal-scorer (Drogba, RvP, Aguero, Suarez, RvN) and .....
a top class keeper (Cech, Schmeichel, Hart (last season), Edwin van der Sar, De Gea, Courtois).

I've always believed that goal-keepers are under-valued in their importance to a team, they are often every bit as much match-winners as strikers, and that on a £ for £ basis they are probably the best value players you can buy. Why do we penny-pinch, £9m, when what was, and still is, needed is splashing £20m or so on one of the best 5 or 6 keepers around and paying him £100k a week ? I'm not saying over-paying just for the sake of it, but paying double for a much better keeper than the likes of Mignolet or Begovic. Had we done that to replace Pepe then we wouldn't now be looking at replacing Ming and having then spent well more than £20m in total.

Rodgers admits a new keeper is required this month. “I think we need a goalkeeper of some sort, it’s just depending on how long Brad Jones is going to be out injured,” he said. “We are obviously down and have got two young inexperienced keepers behind Simon, who is only just back in the team, so we need to assess that.”

A keeper of SOME SORT ? FFS. If it is dependant on how long Brad Jones is going to be out that doesn't sound like Cech or Ter Stegen or any fucking top keeper for that matter.

No doubt it'll be the transfer committee's fault that they didn't recognise Mignolet has webbed fucking feet.

Just like it'll be the committee's fault that nobody had bothered to check if Balotelli ran before we spent 16M on him.

Not Rodgers' fault in the slightest.

No, we cant. Begovic is a much better allround keeper.
Firstly, he commands his box and is aggressive.
Secondly, he can actually kick the ball with both feet.
Mignolet is horrendous in both.
Thirdly, Begovic is probably just as good at shot stopping.

We might need an even better keeper but there is no doubt we would have been better off with Begovic 18 months ago.

Not buying that. He's been linked with bigger clubs more than once already, but none of them has taken the plunge. Given Mignolet's collapse in form it's obv.possible that Begovic might have done better, but "no doubt" is OTT however often you repeat it.

The other top clubs already have good goalkeepers bar Arsenal.
Two of his strenghts are kicking and commanding his area. Both areas were Ming is awful so there's the no doubt upgrade.

Doesnt matter anyway. We are were we are mate 🙂
