He's a keeper...

I have a horrible feeling we won't sign a goalkeeper this window and we will be forced to endure multiple heart attacks as Mignolet and Jones compete neck and neck for the title of worst goalkeeper in the league

We should ALL over that. To be honest we've had months to sort this out so I dont understand why we dont have anyone lined up.

Mourinho saying he wont block a Premier league move for Cech. Sign him!

This ! This ! So much this !

However in other news Ochoa is odds on to join us 4/7 and only 5/4 to stay at Malaga. In virtually every other case (bar Shaqiri to Inter and Sneijder to Juve) it's odds on no movement.

Cech is available for 5 mill this summer.
No point in signing someone half decent in January if we can get him this summer.

Liverpool have put Cech high on their list of potential replacements for Mignolet. He will decide on his future in May. (Telegraph) #lfc

Ochoa doesn't strike me with much confidence.
Good WC and good for Nice. Cant get a game in La Liga.

He's got much of the same as Ming imho, and wont be able to command his box or communicate with the defence.
Better with the ball at his feet no doubt, but overall not a massive step up.

Can't agree more with the thoughts you've expressed. I was just about to ask if in addition to his shot stopping, anyone here is/was impressed with other parts of Ochoa's game.

He strikes me as a keeper whose spectacular actions draw attention away from his inadequacies - as Hansern listed them.

He never really lived up to the early hype, and only shone again after leaving for France.

In fact, he was so good there, he impressed Hansern with his performances for Nice while actually playing for Ajaccio😛

Victor Valdes offers Manchester United safety and security in net

ESPN FC's Shaka Hislop praises Manchester United for signing keeper Victor Valdes.
"That's Victor Valdes' place," Luis Enrique said to me in April 2013 as we walked close to his home south of Barcelona. "Not bad, eh?"
Ahead stood the finest looking of all the houses owned by Barca players. Clad in white, the futuristic property overlooked the Mediterranean Sea and was a house that showed the kind of material rewards a working-class boy can acquire if he makes it as a top footballer. Valdes, who turns 33 next week, has been absolutely at the top level for most of his career.
Since breaking into the Catalans' first team in 2002 under boss Louis van Gaal, he's won 21 trophies with Barcelona: six league titles, three European Cups, six Spanish Super cups, two Copa del Reys, two Club World Cups and two European Super Cups.
Individually, Valdes won the Zamora five times, the award given to the top-flight keeper in Spain who concedes the fewest goals. It helped having some of the greatest players on the planet in front of him, of course, but shouldn't detract from his record.
"He's the greatest goalkeeper in Barcelona's history," said Pepe Reina. "He's the number one," purred Andres Iniesta of the goalkeeper who has played 521 games for Barca, 376 in the league.
On Thursday, Valdes signed an 18-month deal with Manchester United on a free transfer. Now in charge of United, Van Gaal confirmed he arrives at Old Trafford as the No. 2, behind David De Gea, placing into question the future of backup Anders Lindegaard.

Victor Valdes is presented as a Manchester United player on Thursday.
Valdes' decision to leave Barcelona raised eyebrows. When he told the club that he wanted to go in December 2012, they thought it was a negotiating tactic for a better deal. Valdes, who always maintained that spending one year as Barca's goalkeeper was like three years at another team, was adamant; he wanted to try something new and stated that his decision was "irrevocable." Fans were perplexed. He hadn't fallen out with anyone; he was playing with his mates.
Monaco emerged as the suitor in 2014 before Valdes ruptured his cruciate ligament. With three months of his contract remaining, he never got to say goodbye to fans after a game and was soon unemployed.
Liverpool wanted Valdes and there was an offer from Juventus, too. He didn't feel right about either club, especially Liverpool even though their goalkeeping situation is far more fraught than United's and he could have been a realistic first-choice custodian.
In the end, Valdes felt better about Manchester United, in part because he knew Van Gaal and United's goalkeeping coach Frans Hoek. United welcomed him in October with a view to him training well, then passing a medical and signing for the club. Valdes accepted United's offer.
Valdes was always something of an Anglophile. In 2012 he told me: "I like the respect of the crowd toward footballers in England. It's a different way of living football. They clap a simple tackle in England, we're not used to that. I really like it.
"I've played in Scotland, too. That's a difference world, isn't it? There's always a spectacular atmosphere in Glasgow. I've played against Celtic and Rangers and, during the game, looked around and heard the noise and thought, 'Wow, this really is amazing, this is incredible.'"

Suspect that he just didn't have much confidence in the backline setup.

Agreed. The signing of Valdes could be their attempt to insure against that happening, especially since he's not really the kind of player you'd expect to be happy with being a no.2 choice for any length of time.

Didn't feel right about the club, he's got a point who'd want to be coached by Achtenberg

True dat. Valdes might not have known about him beforehand but it probably took him all of 10 seconds to spot that the guy is a whopper.

We dont offer players aged 30+ a 2 year contract (unless stevie G) which probably cost us on this transfer and and any hope on signing cech

Saw an article the other day about the Mancs having to sign Falcao for about 43 million squid before De Gea will sign a new contract and he only has 18 months left. They both have the same agent. Can you guess who he is?

Guardian says we are after a new keeper this window:

Simon Mignolet’s problems at Liverpool stem not from his hands but his feet, according to manager Brendan Rodgers, who has confirmed he wants a new goalkeeper in the January transfer window.

The Liverpool goalkeeper lost his place to Brad Jones recently and only returned to the side after the Australian suffered a thigh injury against Burnley on Boxing Day. He has made an inauspicious return, struggling to control the ball at Turf Moor or to command his penalty area during Monday’s FA Cup win at AFC Wimbledon where, in fairness, he was in collision with 16-stone striker Adebayo Akinfenwa.

Mignolet has kept only four clean sheets in 25 appearances for Liverpool this season and is liable to be targeted when he faces former club Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Saturday. “If an opposition goalkeeper is struggling for confidence, then Sunderland should put him under pressure, whether he is a former favourite or not,” wrote former Sunderland player Gary Rowell in his local newspaper column.

Rowell added: “In Mignolet’s last season at Sunderland, he was outstanding and nobody did more to keep them up, making crucial saves that won his team points. He also started his Liverpool career well, so it’s difficult to work out why it’s gone wrong for him this campaign.”

Rodgers believes the answer lies in his goalkeeper’s footwork and concentration levels. He held several conversations with Mignolet, signed for £9m in 2013 as first choice over Pepe Reina, during the keeper’s “indefinite period” out of the side and admits the 26-year-old is still adjusting to the different demands of playing at Anfield.

“Simon was at the time we were watching him, and still is, a wonderful shot-stopper,” Rodgers said. “He makes big saves but the adaptation for him is coming into a big team where you are not having to make as many saves and therefore concentration is important and you probably have more touches of the ball with your feet than what he might have expected.

“He has come in here under massive expectation to replace a player who was outstanding for Liverpool for seven or eight years. He is trying to develop areas of his game. He knows he needs to improve with his feet and he is working hard on that on a daily basis. He is analysing the games and working with the coach and doing everything he can to be the best he can be.”

Mignolet made 101 appearances for Sunderland before joining Liverpool and Rodgers’ admission the club signed a player uncomfortable with his feet appears startling but he said: “Everyone can improve. If you bring in an outfield player or a goalkeeper they can always look to improve their touch or their ideas. It was a new way of working for Simon and for him it was about understanding how a big team and a big club plays, which is to dominate the ball. In my time of working with the players they understand that but it doesn’t always happen straight away, sometimes it can take that wee bit of time.”

Danny Ward, the Wales under-21 international, will be back-up for Mignolet at Sunderland and Rodgers admits a new keeper is required this month. “I think we need a goalkeeper of some sort, it’s just depending on how long Brad Jones is going to be out injured,” he said. “We are obviously down and have got two young inexperienced keepers behind Simon, who is only just back in the team, so we need to assess that.”

It's pretty unbelievable stuff really.

How do we get ourselves into these situations?

Good job on identifying the fact that he's completely unsuitable after signing him.

Can we stop going on and on about Begovic...there is zero proof that he would have made the step up to a bigger club easily.

There is not a lot between Begovic and Ming and we clearly need better...
