He who shall not be named

I read a few weeks back that Spurs scouts had given the same type of reports as ours, not good enough.
Seeing as they're now going for him then they must have missed out on some other targets.

Will be interesting to see how he fares in the EPL. Knowing our luck he'll be a star.

He'll be a star and it has nothing to do with our luck. Just our stupidity, that we are not the ones seemingly going to gain from it.

We must have other targets lined up. Amazingly cheap ones too I guess.

PANICS!

Guardian now reporting Spurs have bid €8m which is what... £7m odd - so not much more than we paid for Alberto..

We clearly have zero interest in this player.

@Marcotti: Eriksen textbook "eye test" case. Scouts see him as soft + unathletic, analytics guys love him. Ideological clash.

I know who I'd rather have for the money.

At that sort of price it would be a crime it to be involved in signing him.

That's less than the price quoted for that 18 yr old from Derby.

Maybe he eats babies or has a third nipple or is a fan of Justin Bieber - whatever it must be a top tier crime against humanity,

To me it sounds like he's more interested in putting out a soundbite than shedding light on anything.

Maybe, he's just sharing what scouts have told him though. Its strange that so few teams have gone after him.
That said, for 9 mill its pretty risk free and he'll probably end up a very good signing for them.

Anyone think Spurs might be near finished with their signings yet? You know, just so we can have a look at what's left. Time is running on.

According to Dutch press, it's €12M, which will be paid in 4M installments within 3 years. There is also a bonus in case Spurs make CL.

🙁

Heh, wow. Tough luck Khl.

It will be interesting to see how he develops in England, particularly compared to Coutinho, Alberto and hopefully some day soon, Suso. It's hard not be at least a little rueful here but hopefully our players will end up giving us cause for faith in the management's decision making (hey, it has to happen one day).

Someone suggested last night that the transfer committee sets a fee for a player before FSG start the negotiations. For Eriksen it was 10 mill, ended up being 12 mill € hence why we're not in for him.

It wouldnt surprise me either as we apparantly missed out on Willian because of 3 mill. Although Chelsea would have gotten him in the end regardless.

Do you guys think he would choose us over Spurs?

(Of course if we'd have acted earlier in the summer it may not have been an issue)

Spurs -- or more accurately, Levy -- has played a blinder this summer. It's a masterclass in spending the fortune from selling your star player. While we supposedly balk at the €12M and refuse to bulge at our evaluation of €10M, the reported payment in installments suggests it's less of an evaluation issue and more of a negotiation one.

The window isn't closed yet, but I can't help getting disappointed, and more than a little frustrated, by our own inactivity. Rather than a star football player, our marquee signing should be a star chairman or football man. A Daniel Levy or a David Dein. I don't know the real ins and outs of the club and what we are fed from the media is only a smidgen of what really goes on, but dang it, FSG are making it easy to point fingers at them.

I don't know, I think it's pretty telling that no one has gone for him though and that he's obviously not a first choice for Spurs either. Also, why would Ajax get rid of a player at that price, when the original fees earlier in the Summer being quoted for him were £15m-£20m? Just shows how much transfer value gets inflated based on hype, only for it to dwindle when no one bothers.

His set pieces might be a big plus, it'll be interesting to see if his overall ability makes him worth it in the long run. No doubt he'll be a player who gets posted about everytime he does something decent.

Can we please move on?

I'm sorry, we were never interested, can we stop caring about this player now?

I don't think people should really be throwing Alberto into the mix either. He was bought months ago when Rodgers clearly thought he was in a position to go on and spend big on another player, and at a time when the fees being mentioned for Eriksen were much higher. If we opted to spend £6m on Alberto NOW as opposed to getting in on this, then maybe yeah.

This prejudice of yours is getting pretty tiresome Mark.

This prejudice of yours is getting pretty tiresome Mark.

What prejudice? Is any of that untrue? No one has bid for him all Summer, yet he's been lauded as this great player, and now he's going for 3x £4m installments. I've never said I don't rate him, I've got my doubts and the lack of Summer activity has compounded that concern. As opposed to Kris asking "what on earth are we doing?. No prejudice there, obv.

No worries Mark, promise you I'll leave him alone if/when he goes to a rival club, then he's out of our reach and as such of no interest to us anymore.

Having said that he's not been paraded at White Hart Lane yet why there's still hope.

His set pieces are amazing and especially his corners has been so for a long while, the fact he's been scoring on 2 out of 3 attempts in the past month from free kicks indicates he'll be a monster in that area as well. Has scored 5 direct free kicks in his past 9 games. To comparison fake Ronaldo scored two in all of last Season for Real. It's pretty rare and obviously he won't continue at this rate, he just seems very confident hitting them and got the skills to do so.

That's not the reason why we should be in for him, much more so that he'd be the perfect player for us in Rodgers system, would be a creative beacon in the mist of hard working, not so creative midfielders in our team. Apart from Coutinho and to some extent Gerrard, I struggle to see how we are going to create enough chances over the course of a Season - let alone add goals from midfield. Henderson will hopefully have a massive Season and this will help us we still look amazingly slim in that area.

There've been stories emerging from Holland that Spurs are buying him for the XI, expecting to apply him on their left central midfield area or on the wing - a bit like Bale's role - exactly where we could make use of him as well.

Oh, and can we please stop all this no-one's interested bollocks?

He has rejected all of the usual Russian clubs this window, a German club as well as given all the clear indication he'd only consider a move to a club considerably bigger than Ajax -and that he expects to be playing. He has rejected City three times over the course of the career - last Season being latest - and has also rejected Chelsea several times. AC Milan and AS Roma has both been linked to him as has Arsenal and ourselves. Even United it seems.

He's 21-year-old and talent wise in the same bracket as Isco. And we are absolutely crazy if we are not at least giving it our best shot, by the looks of it, he's even going to a club with no ChL to show at this moment. No matter how you address this, with the quoted fees in mind, we are in a right mess if we are not fighting our chances, even if some daft scout thinks he's soft and not athletic enough.

*rant over*
