Gulasci - recall ?

On the bench? I'd play him. It'd be Jones on the bench (at best) if it were up to me.

I'm kind of leaning that way too JJ. Cant say I've seen enough of either to make an informed decision but, from what I've seen, Gulasci looks the better option. I'm no expert of course.

Well, true and Jones is clearly prone to a howler but it'd be a massive risk which could cost Kenny his job (not suggesting he should!) if he played Gulasci.

Why ? Both are inexperienced. It's like choosing between a rock and hard place. Jones's reactions just seemed a little slow for me and I think Gulasci cuts a more imposing figure i.e. he's a big fecker less likely to get bullied off the ball which you know will be the EFC tactics. I still expect Jones will start though

I won't be basing my opinions of Jones on that last game. It was a strange game, and anyone can make mistakes, especially when they haven't played in a long time.

Jones is the more experienced and should start.

Although I'm saying this without having seen much of either of them.

Neither has Jones apart from last night.
I don't know about reserve games, regarding Gulacsi but Jones has been a regular for the reserves. So at least he's match fit.
I guess they'll see in training.

Fair point but you don't have to be super fit to be a goalie. It's more about sharpness and Jones just didn't look it for me although nerves may have played a part.

Uphill with the penalty save- downhill with the gaff.
I think the win gave him some confidence. I think he'll do well with Skrtel and Agger infront of him.

the fuck up from jones was amazing. if I were everton I would just bombard the keeper with hoofs into the box*

*in other words it will be business as usual for everton.

Brad Jones = the new Patrice Luzi

Being a third choice keeper can't be the most fun job at the best of times but its hardly a further confidence boost if, possibly the one time you are ever called upon to actually play, the club brings someone in to replace you!

To be honest when you get down to the third choice keeper they are probably much of a muchness anyway so I can't say I'm too concerned which one plays.

what did he do?

Dudek got injured during a game, Kirkland was already injured (obviously) so Luzi came on as sub. We won the game (1-0 at Stamford Bridge) but then the next day Houllier went out and got Paul Jones in on loan.

Houllier was always a bit harsh on keepers come to think of it

Basically our second choice keeper was injured (Kirkland, no surprise). We were playing Chelsea and Dudek got injured during the game, so Luzi was brought on and did relatively well (we won). So this was Luzi's big chance.
However, a couple of days later Houllier decided to contact Southampton in order to loan Paul Jones, basically a goalie past his prime.
He was terrible and that was the first and last time Luzi played for us.
Everyone questioned what the point of a third choice keeper was after what transpired that season.

In fairness, Jones wasn't terrible. We won one game with him and lost the other. Sure it seemed harsh on Luzi but Houllier was the one seeing him in training every day I guess.

On another note. I believe the rule will be changing next year and such challenges will earn a yellow card instead if a penalty is awarded. The logic being, although a goalscoring chance is denied one is also given via the penalty

would be great news if true, i've been banging on about the lousiness of the current rule for ages. the other one that always gets me only giving a pen and red card when a player handballs a shot on the line. it'd be better to give a goal and a yellow card, so to avoid obvious injustices like Ghana suffered in the World Cup.

Lad I work with is a qualified coach/ref and was telling me about the changes yesterday

Imagine you are 2-0 up with 20 mins to play in an important game you need to win. You also have a massive match coming up next. The attacker gets past you and is clean through. What you are going to do now; foul him outside the box, get sent off and miss the next match (which could be a massive loss to your team) or concede the penalty and hope that it is either saved or you can hang onto to your now 2-1 lead?

It's almost a moral dilemma at that point and might depend on your relative worth to your team. When the rule first comes in you are right and people will instinctively not want to give away a penalty. But after a short while, and once some player does make the counter-intuitive choice for the greater good, it could take on a whole new dimension in tactical thinking in those circumstances.

Or attackers just won't get fouled at all as they run through because the permutations are a nightmare for the defedning team.

but we've already got the reverse of this situation with defenders desperately trying to tackle before the box, because a few inches further back the punishment is much more lenient on the team (if not the player).

the main consideration is whether a penalty is as good a goalscoring opportunity as a normal one from open play. if it is - it'd be interesting to see what the stats say - then there's really no sense in sending a man off for denial of a goalscoring opportunity, because there'd be no incentive to act as you suggest: you might as well let the play proceed and save the yellow card.

Liverpool Football Club can confirm they have spoken to Hull City about the recall of goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi.
The agreement is subject to approval from the Premier League, Football League and the FA.

Not a done deal....

Have you seen the size of Neville Southall? We should get him on loan and keep feeding him till he filled the goal.

Goalkeeping legend Neville Southall has dived into the net and launched his own ‘football consultancy’ website – but don’t expect to save any money.
Inspiringly named, asknevillesouthall.com, the former Welsh international, who won a record 92 caps, charges £50 per email, and £99 for a single, hour-long phone call.
