World Cup 2014: Steven Gerrard tells Harry Redknapp to name and shame Spurs stars who turned down England

Steven Gerrard has urged Harry Redknapp to name the Tottenham Hotspur players he says came to him to try to get out of playing for England

By Matt Law

Steven Gerrard has challenged Harry Redknapp to “name and embarrass” the Tottenham Hotspur players who he claims did not want to represent England.
Redknapp said yesterday that he managed “two or three” players at Spurs who told him that they did not want to play for the national team. England captain Gerrard said Redknapp must not protect the players’ identities and reputations.
“I tell you what, I’d be interested to find out who those players are,” said Gerrard, who insisted that every member of the England squad that has already been eliminated from the World Cup has been fully committed to the cause. “If Harry is making a comment like that, he should name them and embarrass them. No one in this group wants to go home. No one wants to go home.
“Should Harry not name them? If it’s the case, it’s disgusting. For me, if a player doesn’t want to be [with England], he doesn’t deserve to be here at a World Cup. The comment is a comment, like ‘them’. ‘They’ didn’t want to play for England. Who? Name them. Is it Aaron Lennon, Kyle Walker, Andros Townsend? I don’t know who he means. Five years ago? Ten years ago?”

So then who do you think it could be? Harry managed Spurs from 2008-2012 so It can't be that hard to work out.

I bet it was David Bentley - He always looked like a right tart to me. Thoughts?

Lennon looks like he can't arsed. Crouch was probably told by Abby Clancy to attend some fashion show instead.

Bentley, King, Lennon.

Maybe Defoe towards the end of his time when he was being overlooked, I still find it hard though as he always seemed to be one of the guys who liked England more.

Bentley pulled out of U-21 Euro's one year claiming to be 'too tired' to play. Wasn't he tormented with gambling problems around the same time?

Ditto Walker. If folks think Magic's slapdash, I shudder to think what they'd have made of that waster.
Most overrated player in England, because he can run fast.
In fact he's the ultimate English player, he can run fast, tackles hard but recklessly, scores/comes close with the occasional long range effort, beats a player two times out of ten, that's all the media and fans seem to rate in this country. See Andros Townsend and Jack Wilshire (minus the speed).

Harry is such a gossip, they probably don't exist or it happened once with one player.

If.. it is true, are we just talking about friendlies? People used to laugh at the thought of Giggs doing it, is it that big a deal?

Poor the Townsend, he never even played for Harry. The list is not a long one, and you can discount the strikers because they would happily play in friendlies to boost their goal tally, you can discount the shit players who've never been capped, you can discount the ones who are well capable of getting injured themselves, you can discount Scotty Parker. That just leaves a few douchebags out of which you'd have to say it's Lennon and Walker.

David Bentley (7 England caps)
Jermain Defoe (55 caps)
Tom Huddlestone (4 caps)
Aaron Lennon (21 caps)
Jermaine Jenas (21 caps)
Darren Bent (13 caps)
Jamie O’Hara (0 caps)
Michael Dawson (4 caps)
Ledley King (21 caps)
Jonathan Woodgate (8 caps)
Kyle Naughton (0 caps)
Kyle Walker (10 caps)
Peter Crouch (42 caps)
Danny Rose (0 caps)
Scott Parker (18 caps)
Jake Livermore (1 cap)

Ha - I was half way through compiling a list just like that (with the strike throughs and everything) Good job I checked this thread first. That's 15mins of my time I'll never see again....

It is not Scott Parker that's for sure. He would do ANYTHING for his country.
I seriously doubt it's Huddlestone as well. He's been on record several times saying how much he wants to play for England. I think it's either Lennon or Bentley for sure.

to be honest i'm not sure what to make of this whole story and i'm not sure if gerrard is coming across too well here. I suspect he's very frustrated and down but i don't believe this is the time to get caught up in something like this, especially listing players like this is some sort of witch hunt . Now they'll need to defend themselves , if i was one of the players mentioned and i didn't do anything wrong i'd tell him (and Harry ) to fuck off .
I mean he's right on some levels but what's he going to do if he gets this name ? Call round the players gaf and have words ?
And anyway can you really trust Harry Redknapp ? . He's the sort of lad who has a poodle bark at him in the park and 10 mins later he's telling sky sports news how he fought off a pack of wild wolves .
And lets be honest , i'm sure gerrard has pulled out of friendlies in the past when he's been asked to by us. It's a dangerous game to start pointing fingers.

Actually another thing i've never got about international football is this whole thing that a player and club can be fined and sanctioned left , right and centre if they refuse a call up or pull out . Yet all you have to say is " i don't want to play for you anymore" and they can't touch you . They play on this whole "it's a privilege to play for your country " . I guess maybe as i am not the most patriotic of people i'm not so passionate about it .

Largely agree. I can understand him and Budgie being cheesed off with what Harry's been saying, but it would have been better just to ignore it.

Gerrard should stop taking the high ground and forget it. It makes no difference now does it? Retire from England and get on with it. Your time is up.
