Probably one of my all time favourite footballers of all time.
I've loved watching this guy for the past 16 years and was delighted to hear that he penned a new 5 year deal today. It will keep him at his boyhood club for whom he signed as a 9 year old untill he is 37.
I love shit like that. Hes been too good for that Roma team for years, but hes stayed and regardless of what else he ever did, he will always be able to say he captained his boyhood and home team to the title in Italy. Bet he wouldnt trade that for 4 European cups elsewhere.
A legend and a brilliant WORLD CLASS footballer, look forward to the next 5 years.

Yet Alan Shearer is slated in this country (mainly by Salfordites I guess) for joining his boyhood team.

Totti never did enough for me. I know he won a world cup, but seemed to go missing in big games.

Still, fantastic achievement and wonderful to see. We need more.

Roma is a big club.
Newcastle aren't.

Never lived up to the hype for me.

Granted I probably haven't watched enough of him but in Europe and for Italy he never really delievered on the big occasion or consistently enough.

A bit of an enigma for me as to why he gets called a footballing great.

He did get the European Golden Boot a few years back....And he is probably the best Italian technical footballer still playing, think the Totti love comes from the fact that he's come through he Roma academy, became a big name and is still there. The same sentimental reason why people love Maldini.

No, he isn't. He's slated because he won two bits of fuck all.

The idea that Francesco Totti always disappointed for his country & Roma is one of football’s darkest myths.

At Euro 2000, the he was some people’s Player of the Tournament. Totti scored twice, also chipping his famous ‘spoon-kick’ in the semi shootout win over hosts Holland. In the final itself, which Italy lost dramatically, Totti was the undoubted man-of-the-match, executing a genius back heel in the build-up to Marco Delvecchio’s opener.

At the 2002 World Cup he provided numerous assists for goals that both stood and were wrongly disallowed before being incorrectly sent off against South Korea. A half-fit Totti still provided more assists than anyone else as Italy won the 2006 World Cup, also executing a crucial last-gasp second round penalty against Australia

Honours:

World Cup winner: 2006
Serie A: 2001
Serie A Footballer of the Year: 2000, 2003
Italian Footballer of the Year: 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2007
Serie A Top Scorer: 2006-07
European Golden Shoe: 2006-07

Nothing but respect for this guy.

He's stuck out with Roma, when he could have easily left at any point in his career. He has put his loyalty above glory.

Maldini is up there with the best left backs the world has ever seen.

Totti is nowhere in the list of top attacking talent so that comparison has no foundation.
You clearly havnt seen enough of him.
Im a Roma fan and have watched him since a lad. Hes an incredibly gifted footballer who i enjoy watching almost more than any other. His passing, control, skill, vision, creativity and finishing are as good as anyones in the world.
He along with the great Batistuta dragged a hugely inferior team to the title and for almost every other year (as evidenced by his yearly player of the year award) single handedly keeps Roma in european contention.
It would be the equivalent of Everton having kept Rooney and him keeping them in the top 4.

For those saying he hasnt really done it, did you know that on Monday night, he was honoured in Rome city centre as the top goalscorer in Italy today. With 178 goals, thats more than Vieri, Del piero, Trezeguet etc. He's now 9th on the all time scoring charts. NINTH! Not bad for a player who doesnt really do it eh?

I think he's a fantastic player, as well as being one of the few remaining role models for young players to look up.

He's all too often overlooked when talking about 'the modern greats'.
Yes. Its also him who is a unicef ambassador who does a shed load of charity work, including penning joke books to raise money for childrens charities. And who roped in a bunch of other players to help on a show to raise money for underprivelidged children.
Lets not pan the guy who made the error of gobbing on a player once in a 25 year career. Yeah it wasnt nice, but it should hardly warrant character assassination.
I think hes fucking awesome.

While I'm not sure Ryan agrees with your evaluation of Totti to a tee, I think his reply to DB was more taking the piss of his 'I haven't seen him enough' comment ...

As for me, Totti has been a class act. Similar to Roma what Baresi/Costacurta/Maldini were to Milan

KIND OF.

Except Rooney will never be as good as Totti. NEVER.

Totti's ability is all natural, a gift.

Ok, Rooney will probably never rival Totti as a goalscorer or a leader, but he's just as able, if not better, in many other categories.
I disagree. Other than hard work Totti is miles better in almost everything its possible to judge a footballer on.

Totti has more natural talent in my opinion - he is fantastic with the ball at his feet - but without comparing the two in the cuntiness stakes, I'd rather have Rooney in my team.

Totti is one of those players, a bit like Ibrahimovic, that non Serie A fans always anticipate watching to see what all the fuss is about and end up disappointed. And he is prone to blowing hot and cold, for all the talent he possesses. Rooney is more consistent.

No no no no no Oncy.

I love Totti. I was just cutting yer man's post to show that he doesn't rate him, but then admitted he hadn't seen enough of him. Anybody who's watched him more than once every 2 summers recognises his quality.

Would never have come up on my radar as one of the top European footballers in modern times.

I will put my hand up and say I have not seen alot of him, but I would have seen him in the top tournaments both international and club and he has not done enough to live up to his domestic billing.

The games I have not seen him in would be the domestic Italian league and if that is where he is making his name then good for Roma, home is where the bread and butter is earned.

But to be up there with the best, he has to do it when placed against the top teams in the top tournaments.

Its for that reason that I would level the same accusation at Ibrahimovic.
