Flat back four

We seem to be leaking soft goals no matter who plays, but our fullback positions seem a real worry. I thought Agger did quite well in the second half but he was understandably rusty in the first half. Flanagan has done really well when he's played too, while Johnson, well we all know he's well under par.

So should we go with a typical flat back four of out and out defenders to try and rectify this problem? Agger and Flanno are both comfortable in possession, support reasonably well and won't get caught too far up field. They are defenders first and foremost and may help solidify a leaking back line, at least as a temporary measure.

So for the time being:

Flanagan---Skrtel---Toure---Agger

Any takers?

Yeah, I'd try it. Not many of our goals have come from the fullbacks being near the box anyway

Misunderstood the thread, yes I agree, Johnson should be benched for the next few games.

Flanno is out for a couple of more games isnt he?
Johnson was shockingly poor today.

I've been a fan of Johnson for many years but fuck me he's testing my patience. I'd sell if the price was right and go after better.

No.

We shouldn't do it, and Rodgers will never ever ever do it. Unless he's forced to field something as 1970's as that through injury or something.

So yeah, no.

I don't think I'd be interested in seeing Agger at fullback again, I didn't like what I saw today. I'd be tempted to put Sterling at right back for a home game against Hull if he wasn't doing so well where he is or if Sturridge was available.

Also I haven't been impressed with Coutinhos effort at times, I know he's not expected to bust his balls to get back but standing there like he's too good for the dirty work isn't right. There was a moment against City that stood out for me, it was only around 65-75 minutes, we lost the ball high up the pitch and he could've gotten involved with trying to retrieve it but he clearly thought fuck it and just stood there. Unacceptable.

is McLaughlin an option for this? I think Cissokho is a donkey but I'd still prefer him to Agger in the Hull match.

No.

1970's as in being able to defend rather than rampaging up and down the line aimlessly like Glen Johnson does? 1970's as in, playing Agger at fullback like he did yesterday, and Jon Flanagan at fullback, like he did two weeks ago?

This pretentious bollocks is getting a bit irritating, the condescension about what people do & don't do in the game anymore and how modern your thinking is. It's still a round ball played with XI players. You just shot it down (predictably) despite the fact that it's something that's been utilised in part anyway. But yeah, crossing, attack minded fullbacks and midfielders who don't make tackles in the middle of the pitch is soooooo new age. I bow down to your self-righteous superiority.

So yeah, whatever. Watch a game in 3D and marvel at at how the ball is whipped in from the side of the pitch onto Lukaku's head, and then tell us it's not called crossing (that's so flares and sideburns!) but a precise aerial maneuvering release, or something.

Could you be any more sanctimonious these days?

Heh. You've been a longstanding advocate of "defenders should be able to defend" and "fullbacks should be defenders first and foremost" and it's perhaps on that side of things that I can sympathize with Ryan's post a little bit (don't yell at me too!). I think you kinda need to admit defeat on this one Mark!

I don't mind people disagreeing with me, and I agree we do need attacking support from the backline, but it's not "1970's" is it? that's just a shitty condescending dig.

Houllier's sides had a good solid defense that first and foremost could defend, he didn't build on that with the attacking prowess we needed, but he got close, so to suggest it's yesterdays dream is wide of the mark. You could say the same about Rafa.

I'm not expecting fullbacks to camp on the edge of our box, like I said, Flanno and Agger aren't exactly Carragher when it comes to technical inferiority, are they? It was a suggestion as a temporary measure. I thought that much was clear, I find it irritating that people take opinion based on form as me saying "this is the way it should be FOREVER", especially coming from Ryan who can't stop ripping the piss out of every "best XI" thread because, you know, it's a squad game.

Johnson is playing shit, Cissokho is poor, it just seemed like a logical option, I didn't say it was going to rip the Premiership up, it's a temporary measure that's a viable option, so I don't need the self professed oracle telling us (again) how un-modern it is, actually.

It's pretentious guff.

Yeah, I know.

Unfortunately I don't think we have the options to make any changes. Agger has shown he's not particularly good at LB, Kelly is seemingly out of favour / struggling to regain any kind form and Fannagan will be facing competition from new signings by the time he's back I would imagine.

We're coming up against some "easier" sides now so hopefully the defensive abilities of our fullbacks will be less important.

I'd be surprised if Kelly makes it, I've never been a massive fan (his positioning is suspect and he just seems to kick and chase the ball).. I'm not overawed with Agger there either, but the alternative is Cissokho. We could put Flanno there, but why should Johnson get a continual reprieve?

It'll be interesting to see who plays centre back anyway. Skrtel has been up and down, Toure has had a bit of a breather so might be up for the challenge of his earlier form and Agger has been indifferent too, but at least we know what we're getting with him, more or less.

I had really high hopes for Kelly. Not as a RB but as a CB. He seemed to have all the qualities you'd want.

Shame about the injuries.
