[article=http://www.theguardian.com/football/2014/apr/08/micah-richards-leave-manchester-city-summer-despite-contract-offer]Micah Richards, Manchester City's longest-serving player, has reluctantly accepted he needs to leave the club and decided to turn down their offer of a new contract and pay rise.

Richards, with almost 250 appearances to his name since making his debut in October 2005, believes he needs a fresh start elsewhere to play more regularly and try to rediscover the form that enabled him, at 18, to take Rio Ferdinand's record as the youngest defender to win an England cap. His move will be part of a gradual exodus of English players from the Etihad, with at least four others on their way out in the summer.

City had been trying to dissuade Richards from joining that list, offering a new deal with improved terms, but Pablo Zabaleta has established himself as Manuel Pellegrini's first-choice right-back this season and that has been uppermost in Richards' mind.

His talks with Pellegrini have been amicable and there is an understanding within the club that it has been a difficult decision for a player who has been involved with them since the age of 14. City will want around £7m for the 25-year-old, citing his importance in their title-winning season before injuries allowed Zabaleta the chance to take over on the right-hand side of their defence.

Richards was nominated for their player of the year award that season – described by Gareth Bale as the most difficult opponent he faced in England – but there have been times in the current campaign when he has been fully fit and not even among the substitutes. After losing his place as a regular in England's squads, the past two years have become increasingly difficult, culminating in him being restricted to only 10 starts at City in Pellegrini's first season at the club.

The news has been partly expected at City and the club have already started making contingency plans, sounding out Bacary Sagna to determine whether the Arsenal defender is tempted by a move to Manchester. Sagna has been locked into a contract dispute with Arsenal because of the club's willingness to offer only one-year deal extensions to players in their 30s. Richards, a boyhood Arsenal fan, would be a contender to replace Sagna if the 31-year-old France international leaves north London.

Richards has also been linked with Liverpool and Newcastle and should not be short of options. The defender has 13 England caps but has not featured under Roy Hodgson and is determined to resurrect his international career. His departure could feasibly leave City with only two English players in their senior squad.

Jack Rodwell, the £12m signing from Everton, is available after two injury-troubled seasons at City while Joleon Lescott has already confirmed he will leave and Gareth Barry is working on the basis that his time at City is finished. He will have plenty of offers after a successful year on loan at Everton, with the strong possibility that he will be tied to a permanent deal at Goodison Park.

Scott Sinclair, on loan at West Bromwich Abion, is likely to leave while Richard Wright, the third-choice goalkeeper, is out of contract at the end of the season and that leaves James Milner and Joe Hart as potentially the only senior Englishmen in Pellegrini's squad.

Milner, like Richards, has also been frustrated by his inability to win a regular place in the side and is open-minded about his future, but City intend to hold talks with him about a new contract. Dedryck Boyata becomes a free agent in the summer and the Belgian defender is also expected to leave.[/article]

I don't understand the big deal. English players aren't good enough to make first teams shocker.

The renewed focus on academies will help, buts there's only 11 places in fantastic squads.

For me, the "interest" is on the home grown players part. Currently 8 registered, excluding Sinclair and Barry. If the mentioned names were to leave, they'll be left with 3 (Clichy, Hart, Milner). Would that play a part in their summer transfer plans?

I think Richards is definitely worth going for, especially if £7m is all they're asking for. He has the potential to be a very good RB. Rodwell as well if it's under £10m, but isn't he a hardcore blue?

Certain other players were hardcore blues before they joined us.

We are interested in Micah if you believe some of the reports/rumours. Some suggested he would have moved in January to us if they had signed Mangala.
He'd be a decent option imho and has loads of potential.
Pace, strength and can play both RB and RCB.

Close mates with Sturridge.

[article=http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/west-ham-newcastle-battle-sign-6932816]Newcastle and West Ham are locked in a battle to prise Micah Richards away from City.

M.E.N. Sport understands the clubs both want the 25-year-old and could obtain his services for as little as £4m.

Richards has been with the Blues since he was 15 and won an England cap at the age of just 18.

Before Sheikh Mansour’s takeover he was linked with a big- money moves to Chelsea, with a potential fee of £20m.

However, Richards suffered from injuries under Roberto Mancini and his successor Manuel Pellegrini as well as the consistent form of Pablo Zabaleta.

The Argentine has made the right-back position his own and already has 41 appearances this season.

Richards’ contract expires next summer and City, who have been linked with Arsenal right-back Bacary Sagna, could cash in.

Oldham Athletic have a 20 per cent sell-on clause in any potential fee after Richards was a member of their youth system before joining City.

Richards was offered a new deal last summer but did not sign it.

That offer is not thought to have remained on the table.[/article]

Richards looked frighteningly good when he first came through. Injuries, and subsequently not moving on for first team football have hampered his progress. He should have about 50 caps for England by now. I don't know if I'd take him now, but there was a time when I definitely would have.

Richards always looked brainless to play right back for a top team, with right partner could do better at centre half

Defender Micah Richards, 25, Manchester City's longest-serving player, has reluctantly accepted he needs to leave the club and will turn down their offer of a new contract and pay rise.

That's fucking ridiculous, he's done nothing to earn that, less than nothing because he's proved a bit of a sick note recently and yet they still offer him more money. It's funny how the homegrown rule is actually stunting some players development with mega-rich clubs, Sinclair, Johnson, Rodwell have all arguably gone there to make up the numbers.

I'd take a grand a week to sit on Citys bench if they need homegrown quota fillers 👍 call me guys!

Richards is far superior. And he was far superior at Wisdom's age too.

Yeah but Richards was one of those lads who was a top class prospect. He was expected to go and be an England fixture, like Luke Shaw now is. As it's turned out, Wisdom could well go on to be as good if not better than Richards has become.

far superior? disagree. he may be better but in a year or twos time, i think wisdom will have the edge.

Maybe, but I doubt it. Richards is quicker, taller, and stronger. But he's a bit thick. But then Wisdom doesn't seem all that bright either. I'm not talking about his brain cells off the pitch (where he's already proven how thick he is), but on the field.
I just don't see the potential in him that some people seem to see.

Steel and Grit.

I'm not sure this would be a good move. Oh hang on you mean Micah Richards, not Michael Richards. Nah, still no.
