European Super League

Yup, it just cannot work here.
This sucks, but as Hal says, I think there's no way back now.

I'm not convinced about that last bit yet. The big clubs have been telling UEFA for some time that they want a bigger share of the money which they themselves are largely responsible for bringing into the game, but they surely can't be unaware of the threat this move poses to their own fan base, so it may yet turn out to be a negotiating move, albeit on a very large scale. Arsène Wenger was interviewed on the radio here today in his capacity as FIFA's director of global development and apparently that's how he sees it panning out.

Isn't that essentially a description of how the PL operates?

Well it's hard-written in now. 15 of these teams will be in the league regardless of how they perform. There's no sporting merit. It's gone. There's no jeopardy. No incentive. Just show up and collect your billions. Results are secondary.

As for playing the same European giants every week or whatever, think about it like ice cream. We all love it and enjoy it on special occasions. Some of these times are memorable and stick with us forever.

However, now you're being force-fed ice cream morning, noon and night. It's no longer special. It no longer means anything. You just get fat and gorge on it until you throw up. Then you eat it again.

Possibly. But I for one am done with the lizards for even proposing it. Then you look at the resignations from UEFA boards or whatever they are from people within these member clubs. I think it's happening.

I get sticking one to those corrupt fuckers in UEFA but doing by creating a cartel without any kind of sporting merit is proper shithouse behaviour. Our owners will be made up that they no longer have to invest in the team as their revenue is protected. Unless it damages the "franchise brand" or something. Gobshites

It's for the NHS you see, the tax they pay on their wages helps to fund the NHS. God damn heroes those players, putting the NHS above their own principles.

The Premier league and FA are threatening measures that could cost them far more in the long run as if they exclude the 6 English clubs involved from domestic competitions then surely the next step would be for those clubs to create a new english (or British) league and possibly new domestic cup competition. Because these 6 clubs would be involved the money would follow them from broadcasting , sponsorship and advertising and there would be plenty of other clubs keen to join up once they could get a slice of the pie also.
Plenty of clubs are complaining about this at the moment mostly because they aren't involved.
I'm not in favour of this super league and the financial aspect is of course the most important part of it to the 12 clubs involved but power and control are also a big motivating factor.
Fifa, Uefa, Premier league , The FA and plenty of other governing bodies are not arsed about sporting integrity or sentimental about smaller clubs rising up to supplant the traditional giants of the game they just want their nose in the trough just like everyone else. How long ago was it that Fifa had half of it's employees arrested and charged for bribery and money laundering, Uefa doing back alley deals with Man City and PSG because they knew their own FFP rules were being ignored but they were powerless to do anything about it so colluded with them to keep it quiet. They only attempted to ban them once City's financial records and emails were made public in a German newspaper and then they still lost out in court.
The premier league had been touting playing some games in other parts of the world for years but still pretend to govern in the name of the average football fan which they don't really give a shit about. If they did then why did it take a fan run protest to change ticket prices for away games from the exploitative farce that it had become.
The premier league was also complicit in allowing broadcasters to so alter the scheduling of matches that any idea of football being what it was in the eighties or before is ridiculous. They spout and complain that we must adhere to footballing tradition but that was abandoned decades ago.

Liverpool as a club know exactly how trustworthy the FA can be when they presided over the Hillsbgorough disaster with organisational skills that beggar belief. The FA decided to play the game at a venue without a safety certificate and gave Nottingham forest the larger end of the ground even though our average attendance was significantly higher than them at the time. Not one of the Fa officials involved was prosecuted or even demoted because of their actions or errors so the FA can get to fuck.
The clubs and owners involved in this might well be cunts but so are all other parties involved apart from the fans. No one asked the fans when the Premier league was formed did they or the Champions league , Europa league so why is anyone surprised that we're being ignored again. Fuck the lot of them

Play the same teams every year no relegation no qualification incentive just play for money money money . What's the fun in it ?
Hang on. When was the last time one of the Big Six were relegated ... was it United umpteen years ago? Then no relegation in the ESL will be no different for the 6 English clubs anyway. And who really gives a shit which three different (promoted) teams we get to play each season.

There was still some continuity with the premier league and champions league. A line back to a past that was better, which gives a sense of hope that you just need to preserve that line through the shit until the future is back on track. Like the lineal boxing champ, the man that beats the man is the man. That type of linear record keeping is critical to preserving the competition as something valuable worth winning. Breaking away cuts that line, and then cuts out the competition element altogether for the lols in this case. So the sporting contest is essentially dead at that point, which means it sure as fuck better be just exciting to watch in isolation, which football is not.

At the end of the day the ESL chairmen and their sponsors will have thought out every single aspect of implementation and every potential threat to its implementation that anyone can come up with, inc. potential legal action and banning players from UEFA/FIFA competitions (restraint of trade?).

Therefore this is either simply a massive bargaining chip for more money/power from UEFA or it's going to happen because the economics of it make real sense given the potentially dire straits they could be in as per the debt tables Binny published above. How many people would rather prefer the club to go under because UEFA/PL/FA are skimming off more than is reasonable from a club that 'donates' via it's worldwide fan base, far far more than the average team.

I've no idea which scenario it is but I'd go along with a) (preferably) forcing UEFA to concede more power/money to the club or b) ESL if that is the only viable alternative.

In some bizarre way I am quite relieved about this super league. Like many, I've been gradually falling out of love with football over the last 10 or so years. I know that as a 58 year old there's a nostalgic element of "football was better in my days" pervading my opinions BUT I also think that football is now a commodity and football teams are just companies........the heart & soul of the sport has gone. Who wants to see Neymar diving and feigning injury for £500,000 per game?

My love for the game wasn't even rekindled when we won the league last season; I fucking loved winning it but only because we finally scratched a 30 year itch.....this season has meant nothing to me. I was prepared to stick with Liverpool over the next few years as my love for the game kept dwindling but this super league is just what I needed...........a quick end to the shit-show.

Before Covid I went to see my local team, FC Zlin, in almost every home game. Even though they are in the Czech Premier League they struggle to fill their 7,000 capacity and a top half finish would be considered a fantastic season. Despite that, I love going, there is a great atmosphere, there is great beer being delivered to your seat for £1 a pint, someone is always passing around bottles of slivovice (Czech brandy), there is never any trouble with away fans (apart from maybe Banik Ostrava whose fans are a bit feisty) and winning is not the most important thing - it's all about just supporting the local team.

If this super league goes ahead; my official "first team" will be Zlin and when the mood suits I might watch Kentucky Liverpool play Fiat Juventus............or maybe I won't.

Such a good post. Nail meet head.

UEFA, PL, FA can all get to fuck. Time to pay up or risk the alternative which could be their ultimate downfall.

FSG are desperate to negotiate the clubs TV rights separately from the rest of the pack or at least the little ones that add no value. Cunts
You're right FSG have been pushing for more control (and therefore more money) from broadcasting rights for years. They tried with the foreign TV markets but failed to get enough backing from other premier league clubs as for most of them it would be like Turkeys voting for Christmas. Why back an idea they gets you less money?
It's like a spoilt kid at his birthday party wanting to be the only one with jelly and ice cream and wondering why he has no friends.

Now I get why Covid was utterly rife in the CZ Rep. !
