Downing wants to stay

O
"I was poor this year, I know I can do more and I do even better next year" ... Sounds better than "Oh I was decent" ... No, you weren't. He lacks confidence and self belief to play for a team that has aspirations to challenge for the top 4. It's not his fault, we need players who have that swagger or self belief. It's a large part of the battle.
Oh i seeeeee You just read the bolded parts.
If you had read it all you would see more than one comment about wanting to do better, to score more, how next season is a big test, how he wants to help us improve...

Never mind mate, at least you read a line or two before forming your opinion.

Goals - Assists
Oscar 4 and 4
Downing 3 and 5
Valencia 1 and 4
Nani 1 and 2
Lennon 4 and 6
Milner 4 and 2
Gervinho 5 and 3

Fairly average of the standard of your non world class wingers (Mata, Cazorla etc)

Certainly comparable with the others (although Nani seems to have missed a lot of the season)

Most of Downings came after xmas when he got a run of games and did a 'decent' job.

We can certainly do better but giving it because he said he had a 'decent' season is not the one.
Its because of stats that we got downing in the first place. Stats don't paint the whole picture and you know it. He's a very average player who is playing to the best of his ability which isn't good enough for us. Tom Ince would offer more and would be a lot cheaper and i'm not even a fan of tom ince as i think we need even better than him.

I dont know who you are disagreeing with.
Im saying we need and can get better.
Im saying there are other areas we need to strengthen first.
Im saying he had a decent season.

The position needs adding to, not replacing.

Downing is the only right sided attacking player we have. That's why he's a fixture in our a team and a problem for us when he's out of form, because there's no competition.

I wouldn't be against swapping him, but its certainly not a priority right now and can wait until January or the next summer.

I'd agree with all that. We have at least 5 areas that need to be addressed. Replacing Downing is number 6.

🙂 You really should read it again ... You're reading what Henderson said (which I commented on), and not Downing ...

You see mate, let me lead DA. I'm ready.

"I think overall it has been a decent enough season," he told BBC Radio Merseyside.

"There has been a lot of change, the football is certainly better the way we play.

"If we keep this team together - and I am sure the manager with strengthen - then we can have right good go (next year), that will be the big test.

"The change in manager, the change of players coming in and the change in the way we play we were not going to win everything this season.

"Last season we got the (league cup) trophy but we didn't finish high in the league because we didn't play well enough.

"But next season is obviously the big test for us."

Precisely ... Nothing about "wanting to do better, to score more, how next season is a big test, how he wants to help us improve..." He's a player who lacks confidence, and it's obvious in the way he expresses himself ... Compare it to Henderson:

"It's always important for midfielders to get goals. Hopefully I can keep working on that and get a few more next season," he told liverpoolfc.com.

"Scoring goals has been brilliant for me on a personal level, but I think the team has definitely progressed throughout the season and we can only get stronger and better and we look forward to next season.

"We've played some really good football and won some really good games.

"We're definitely progressing all the time and we'll look to continue to do so in the last two games and next season."

He expects to be here, and wants to do more ... Downing doesn't know his place (despite all the stats you listed etc) ...

I just think we should be doing better.

It says RIGHT THERE 'Big test'

It says RIGHT THERE 'Big test'

I crossed it out ... he doesn't talk about improving personally etc, or doesn't even know if he's staying. He's not being realistic, that's how he's been since he got here despite the King being behind him 1000% (Ryan reminds us all the time) or Mr. Rodgers trying the opposite. Sorry mate, Mark compared him to Riera and while they're similar, one player believed in himself and it showed on the pitch. The other (sadly for us) doesn't.

For fuck's sake - i can't even spell c r o s s e d out without TROLLOCO!!!!!!!

When you have players like Downing, Lucas, Hendo, Enrique and Johnson as nearly half you team, you're coming 7th. At best.

If you want to finish higher than 7th, address that as an urgency.

Downing isn't shite. He's an average Prem player. Which he has proved in his time with us. Unfortunately, we paid 20M to find that out.

I couldnt possibly disagree more.
He came back into the team after xmas, scored and created, performances improved, results improved, we are about to finish higher than last year, with more points, with more goals and playing FAR better football.

I think this is a retarded conversation.

Ultimately a bunch of you are using one line in an interview to suggest he is happy with his/our season and i disagree.
Lets leave it there eh?

Sorry that was to LTw.

He was important in our short European run - and played well there.

Ultimately, I'm using a line that confirms what many of us feel ... That he's not got the mentality to succeed at a big club, and that shows on the pitch ... I don't have any issues with the player, it's just he belongs at a club like Villa (before this season's poor performance for them), where there's no pressure or real expectations from the fans.

This.

I don't think we can afford to have him as the squad player he should be on the wages he's on - but I don't think we'll be lucky enough to get a buyer who will pay him the same wages.

We need better if we're to progress - it's that simple.

It's simple really, most don't rate him but unless we can sell and get better he is what we've got. Being pleased finishing seventh is probably his way of expressing relief at finally getting into the side after 2 years. I'd sell in a heartbeat tbh, I don't imagine we will be swamped with offers mind you.

Downing should only be sold IF we get above 10m. His wages could be put to better use granted, but downing should be getting knocked out of the average standard xi, not binned off for the sake of it.

We need depth.

Yea and hes right.

If you say so ... I've gone through the thread, and no one has 'insulted' Downing etc ... We just want (and need) better. Considering how you've praised Rodgers for lowering the wage bill, do you think the wages he's on (probably 70k+) are worth the end product?
