Downing wants to stay

In the first half of the season the England international could hardly get a game and when he did it was sometimes at left-back.

Rodgers told him in November he could find another club when the January transfer window opened, but injuries provided an opening in the team and the 28-year-old seized his chance.
"That's football for you," said Downing.

"Me and the manager have always had open conversations and I found it difficult at the start of the season because I didn't play, it wasn't that I wasn't playing well.

"Once I got in the team and had a run of games my form picked up and I think the team got better and better and we've had some good results, especially after Christmas.

"There have been some positive signs and personally I'd like to stay but that is the manager's decision."

Downing believes that upturn in performances since the new year points to a sense of optimism for Rodgers' second campaign in charge.

"I think overall it has been a decent enough season," he told BBC Radio Merseyside.

"There has been a lot of change, the football is certainly better the way we play.

"If we keep this team together - and I am sure the manager with strengthen - then we can have right good go (next year), that will be the big test.

"The change in manager, the change of players coming in and the change in the way we play we were not going to win everything this season.

"Last season we got the (league cup) trophy but we didn't finish high in the league because we didn't play well enough.

"But next season is obviously the big test for us."

Fellow midfielder Jordan Henderson believes his hard work on the training ground has been rewarded with the best goalscoring campaign of his career.

But the 22-year-old is not satisfied with his tally of six, scoring three in his last half-dozen games, and intends to become more of an attacking force next season.

Henderson is the club's fourth-highest scorer this season, with the leading two, Luis Suarez (suspended) and Steven Gerrard (injured), unavailable for the final two matches.

The latter's absence because of a shoulder problem means Henderson is likely to get the chance to play in his preferred central role at Fulham on Sunday.

But there is no doubt his all-round game has improved and he wants that to continue.

"It's always important for midfielders to get goals. Hopefully I can keep working on that and get a few more next season," he told liverpoolfc.com.

"Scoring goals has been brilliant for me on a personal level, but I think the team has definitely progressed throughout the season and we can only get stronger and better and we look forward to next season.

"We've played some really good football and won some really good games.

"We're definitely progressing all the time and we'll look to continue to do so in the last two games and next season."

I think the above highlights why we should move Downing on ... Downing says he had a 'decent enough season' ... No Stewie - you had a decent season compared to last year, but it's not good enough. If we get an offer of 10 or more, we should sell.

Contrast his attitude to Henderson, who despite actually coming along, talks about wanting to do more. He'll take his game to the next level next year I think.

The very fact he sees this season as decent is enough to suggest he is not the level we need. We need players who are gutted we are 7th, gutted we didn't win anything and gutted they won't be in Europe next season.

We need all our players to have a winning mentality. I want Downing sold ASAP. Let's bring in a young, hungry player eager for success.

I don't think he'll be here, I think it's the last chance we've got to get a reasonable fee, and all things considered, like his wage etc will see him sold to fund someone younger. He's done ok this season and proven to be a good squad addition, but the money will always weigh him and us down, like Carroll.

Am I imagining that when he got into the team we started to beat people and have better balance?
Im not saying hes awesome, but its not his fault we're 7th.

I agree yeah, kind of like Riera did for us. He was never brilliant but he gave balance to the midfield and we looked a better side with him in it.

I may be wrong, but he offered nothing against decent teams ...He's not the reason we're7th though.

Despite the balance an all that, I think alot of it is down to fairly average players though, particularly Downing, Johnson, Enrique, Lucas, Allen etc, they've all been inconsistent this season and it's that lack of consistency that's cost us. So it's a culmination. I do agree that he gives us balance and is probably further down the list of reasons why we've fallen short, but he's not infallible either. We need add about 4 or 5 really good players to the squad to push on, and that's not accounting for some unforeseen departures that may crop up.

Dont get me wrong, if we can afford Munian or whatever id sell superstu in a heartbeat but CB and a DM/CM would be my priority.
If we can get 15m for him and Assaidi and bang that on a top LM then cool. As long as we have the clout to address the real problems.
Remember how many games we shipped spawny goals in this season.
Downing can do a job, hes proved that.

He has been alright since Xmas. I agree he can do a job and is worth a place in the squad. I would rather have Tadic though.

I would like to endorse this this product and / or service

we won't get enough money to justify selling him so lets keep him, he is a decent player

You want a player who thinks he had a 'decent season' this year? If I had said, "I was well below where I want to be - and I need to improve to justify my wages here if I want to stay," I'd agree with you. But he doesn't belong in a big club ... Henderson, on the other hand, does

Flat track bully who shits the course in the big games.
If we wan't to return to the higher echelons players like him is not what we need.

It is not just about the transfer fee but the wages that he earns each week.
He has another two years on his contract I think, that is £10m.
I would be very surprised if we can't get an equally effective youngster in, on half those wages, with the potential to develop and become a very good player for us or generate a substantial fee on the transfer market

He's probably our weakest player over the age of 25, and he's on a lot of wages. I think we could easily replace him from the youth team with people who are at least as productive. I'd sell if we could.

That's basically the truth.

Sterling should be champing at the bit to displace him in this team. Hope the kid kicks on next season.

He HAS had a DECENT season.
What do you want him to say? It was brilliant when I wasnt playing?
Fuck me.

Indeed he should though he will need competition/cover.
I would prefer if that was another young player with bags of potential over a player past his pretty average peak who seems happy to be cruising through his final big paying contract.

It's more bewilderingly complex than that. When he's been on form he's often done well in big names. He was widely praised, for example, during Boro's games on their way to the UEFA final. He's usually done very well in derby games for his current clubs. He was one of the better players for us in the League Cup final and scored in the shoot out. He's also scored eight goals against Liverpool. So it's not as simple as him just being a flat track bully. That's what's so maddening about him as a player - sometimes he'll be crap against the small clubs and sometimes he'll get MOTM in a big game. His high points aren't anywhere near frequent enough, and he never plays as well as he ought to, but he's a strangely mercurial player.

Fuck me.

"I was poor this year, I know I can do more and I do even better next year" ... Sounds better than "Oh I was decent" ... No, you weren't. He lacks confidence and self belief to play for a team that has aspirations to challenge for the top 4. It's not his fault, we need players who have that swagger or self belief. It's a large part of the battle.

but he's a strangely mercurial player.

Your right but mercurial is always a term Ive associated more with players who have brief but outrageous spells of form, not guys who struggle just to be vaguely underwhelming

He should be a goner this sumer, regardless of the other positions that need attention we should be able to sell him and find a reasonably priced replacement on lower wages, I mean its not as if we are trying to replace Messi, Downing plays about 7/8 good games a season

That's true, but why wouldn't other clubs think like that too?

He's going to be a tough sell.

Goals - Assists
Oscar 4 and 4
Downing 3 and 5
Valencia 1 and 4
Nani 1 and 2
Lennon 4 and 6
Milner 4 and 2
Gervinho 5 and 3

Fairly average of the standard of your non world class wingers (Mata, Cazorla etc)

Certainly comparable with the others (although Nani seems to have missed a lot of the season)

Most of Downings came after xmas when he got a run of games and did a 'decent' job.

We can certainly do better but giving it because he said he had a 'decent' season is not the one.
