i don't know how anyone can think downing is better.
[/quote]

It's because he is.

Better crosser, better attitude, more consistent, better team man, more suited to our side, more versatile (left or right), better and more reliable end product.

Why do you think he isn't?

I have a feeling if downings thunderbolt had of went in instead of hitting the crossbar you wouldn't be starting this thread skully.

i guarantee i would have. downing looks good but young has been brilliant so far.

Just checked and yes, Downing and Young have played one competitive game each for us and Utd respectively.

downings crosses are better, young will score more goals, and probably make more too, having said that i dont think he'd be nearly as effective in our squad as i think he will be in uniteds, he seems almost tailor made for them, just as downing would probably do better here than he would there

I would say that young is a lot quicker while downing has better delivery. I think you could only gauge this debate by their impact on their respective clubs this season. So far I would say that young is in the lead.

i watched all united's preseason games for gambling reasons and i saw all our as well, obv. i've also seen these play for years for other teams. if that's not enough then i'd have to ask you why you're so sure of downing's superiority with such a dearth of information with which to form an opinion?

i'm really not sure that's true but if it is, it may well be the essence of our problem.

united play much quicker counter attacking football, even at the end of last season when we were playing some good passing football it was nowhere near the speed that united did it. not saying that its necessarily better though

Quite happy with Downing, not that much difference between the two to be honest. Had we been in the CL, we would have had Young, and there lies the difference.

regards

young is much more exciting to watch, while downing is more effective more often - overall i don't think there's much between them over a season. can't deny i'd have preferred young at the start of the window, though, and he looked the part for utd today.

also, good point that no-one would've started this thread had that shot from downing been a couple of inches lower. very, very unlucky, and a whisker away from a goal of the season contender.

Watched most of the united game today and Young was shit for most of it, constantly stopping short to cut in and deliver a shit ball. He passed it to Rooney who had a moment of brilliance in the first half, then nothing at all until he shimmied went passed Chris fucking Brunt of all players and got shit lucky. He's very good at set pieces and will score the odd cracker. Downing is better for we needed which was to become less predictable and harder to guard. But for me they are much the same with Young's end product winning out and Downing's overall play including strength and stamina being better.

Agree. Downing is better for what we needed.

Indeed. The real question isn't which player is better individually, but which player helps his team more, and it's only at the end of the season that we'll know the answer.

ask the question again at the end of the season.

When Young is parading around Old trafford with the Premier League trophy in his hand ?

That doesn't really answer the question though does it? If Downing moved to Old Trafford he could easily be the one parading the League Trophy.

Both are decent wingers ..

If I'd have been given the choice, I'd have gone for young.

He beats his man with ease and can whip decent deliveries in.

That said downing looked ace yesterday and if his shot had gone in, this conversation would be null and void. I think downing will go on to be a key player for us.

If we can get gerrard fit, I'm massively excited for this season

Carroll
Suarez
Gerrard
Ming
Adam
Downing
Kuyt

That is a quality pool of talent capable of creating those match winning moments.

Get Kelly fit and bring in a Cahill And a.n other creative talent to come off the bench and I really dont see a chink In our armour.

Henderson
Kelly
Shelvey

3 young British players in the flanks ready to tear things up to.

Very excited for this season to get going good and proper .

P.s downing will score against the gooners
