'don't even bother to look at the league table until we're 10 games in'

When you look back to the side that almost won the title, we had four world class players out of the the attacking six in Gerrard, Torres, Alonso and Mascherano.
We are along way from the quality of that attack now.

So all we need is half a billion on players and we're sorted.

I've got 37 pence here to get the whip round started off.

Not necessarily.

Instead of competing against the likes of City, Chelsea, Barca and Real for players we should be beating the likes of Ajax, Udinese, Porto to the absolutely cracking players they pick up regularly for fractions of what we pay for a average talent.

It requires much better scouting than we've been accustomed to.

Agree with this, so could it be possible that we've signed players like Downing and Adam first because we have not established an excellent scouting network?
Our scouting network is probably not as extensive as it should be yet so could we be seeing more value for money players in the near future?

Exciting times.

I agree with this but aren't we at least attempting this with our youth?

Kind of, the point I was making is that you don't need half a billion to sign good players.

They're always out there, we just need to be better at finding them.

for me the bottom line is given the amount we've spent we need to be averaging to 2 points per game, if we aren't doing that we are performing below expectations.
take man city (and their half a BILLION outlay) we are in and around the top performers.
we need to be more clinical up front and meaner in defense but who is to say these things wont happen? carroll and suarez are starting to build an understanding, henderson is growing more confident, and skrtel and agger look in tune with each other.

nov/dec is usually when things go tits up, with a bit of luck we'll escape winter and still be in with a shout of a top four place. we're below my expectations but only just.

Modric - 16m
Bale - 10m
VDV - 8m
Adebayor - free

Those 4 players were signed for the same amount that we paid for Andy Carroll.

I think we need to take more gambles with regards to wide players. in the first team squad we only have one out and out wide player (ONE!) that's pretty fucking pathetic.

ade is a dressing room meltdown waiting to happen.

we tried to sign bale.

VDV was bought on the cheap because of real's desparation to get him of the wage bill.

modrid was bought when alonso and mash were on the books (I think)

I'm not sure what your point is, anyone could have had him. We didn't / couldn't go for him. Levy stepped in and got a bargain.

I don't think the point was that we should have signed those players, just that quality players do appear on the market for relatively cheap.

I do think we pay a premium in transfers, because we are Liverpool though.

'so, how are we going to win the league?'

'we need better players'

that GENIUS!!

'how are we going to keep more clean sheets?'

'by stopping the ball hitting the back of the net'

---
my opinion of the players we've bought in the summer;
carroll - I thought he was amazing at n'castle and we somehow have to unlock that potential but the potential IS there

henderson - was overwhelmed by his move but is gaining more confidence

can't be bothed to asses the rest of them but the point is before pining for new 'better' players let's develope the players we already have.
I see bale is in the list of 'better' players but how did he start at spurs? is that start any better than henderson's start?

Just a quick point with Bale. He was pretty average for his first couple of seasons with Spurs but has matured into a very good player. This may be the case also with the likes of Carroll who is still young but certainly needs to be playing more.

Bale was 17 when he signed for Spurs, was he supposed to be the finished article then ?

And all credit to Spurs for recognising that a full back who can't defend is worthless. One day maybe we'll do the same.

Neil what about Downing - he was going to guarantee us goals and assists that would win us the league wasn't he ?
He was 18 but no he wasn't supposed to be the finished article at all. The same can be said for other young players such as Henderson and Carroll though. There's no defined timetable of footballing maturity.
Neil - you're fucking killing me. You're fucking killing all of us.
I may well be but it pisses me off when we hold up players that we should be buying when some of those players have had indifferent starts and THEN went on to become great players. carroll and henderson are both young and can massively improve, yes we paid a premium for them but they have big potential and we have to bring that potential to the surface rathering than continually going on about what we don't have which helps noone and is frankly fucking BORING.
he is disappointing me no question but even you must admit given some of his crossing this season he should have SOME assists.

Have we not started to acquire exciting young talent as well - case in point - Seb Coates. I think there's a definite intention to start doing this but it will take time to come to fruition. Unfortunately things don't tend to happen overnight in football. I see progression with the club and team from 12 months ago but we do need to push on further that cannot be denied.

Neil - have a look at that list of spurs players. Then have a look at the name Andy Carroll.

Have a looooooooooong look. Don't reply until you're ready to.

look I get your point about the huge fee but that fee has been paid. carroll didn't set the fee and carroll doesn't pick the team. we need to move past fee now and work towards realising carroll's potential.

This is true. I suspect - though who knows? - that had we signed Bale when Spurs had done he would have ended up being one of those players who we later got rid of for a similar fee.

That is not a dig at Benitez by the way but at that point we needed to buy players who could perform straight away because we had to qualify for the CL every season. Spurs were in a position then when they could invest heavily in young players without needing to maintain relative success (not a lot to maintain at the time).

Does the wage bill add up to the same though? An often overlooked factor and something we had massive issues with. Paying too high wages for utter shite potentially preventing us from securing other players.

is that still true after our clearout?

I don't know. Did it make that much of a difference?

We bought in quite a few new players and we're still paying a big chunk of Aquilani's and Joe Cole's wages.
