Rui Costa was my favorite player as a kid.... This guy better live up to that name....
No chance. Rui Costa was a poet on the pitch, one of the most intelligent midfielders of the 2000s. Diego Costa is a Brazilian Kevin Davis.
And, @
Ryan, he is nothing like Rooney. Rooney is not just hard work and blue collar mentality, first and foremost he is a world-class football talent. Diego Costa has no comparable talent, not even close. And unlike Rooney, he is more of a target man who uses his strong frame (and a large arsenal of dirty tricks) to receive the first pass and lay off the ball to his teammates (it's true however he is more mobile than most target men we're used to seeing in the Premiership).
I am really taken by surprise by this sudden development of Rodgers chasing overpriced Spanish league target men, with big bids for 28-year old Soldado and now Costa. Why was he so desperate to get rid of Andy Carroll then? Why didn't he try to get Mario Gomes, a proven 25+ goals per season striker, who ended up at Fiorentina for only
£17M 14M+add-ons (as a comparison, Costa's best ever league goal return in a season is 10)? Or why not Llorente, a much better finisher and overall player who ended up at Juve for free? Why not Miro Klose? Fuck, if I knew that we are ready to splash £20M+ on Diego Costa, I would have said we should go all out for David Villa, even if he is 45 and on insane wages. At least he can play. And score.
I also didn't think playing with a target man is really what Rodgers' system was about. Barca does't have one, Swansea didn't play with one either. It seemed that with Suarez, Sturridge and Coutinho we had the makings of a fluid, mobile and creative front 4 and he just needed to find one final piece to replace Downing. Mkhitaryan would have fit the mould perfectly, shame it didn't happen (and I am still not convinced it was Mkhitaryan's choice to snub us), but there are still other players in a similar mould available, you all know the names - Eriksen, Dzagoev, Honda. If he wanted a top class right wing-forward, Di Maria is available. It's simply baffling to me that instead of pursuing one of them, Rodgers suddenly switched his priorities and started flinging big money at workhorse target men. And that after dealing with various Suarez controversies all season, he wants to bring into the club an even bigger scandalist, diver and cheater, but one without the redeeming quality of a world-class footballing talent. I'm sorry if I spoiled someone's mood, but this is just absurd to me.
