Diego Costa

Borini hasn't had it easy with injuries. A good preseason now should show us what he has. BUt after 35 years of watching football, and no expert, my spidey senses are telling me he's a bit part player. On the positive side, he hasn't had to move apartments in the past year

Whatever Suarez' concerns are about a lack of marquee signings, it's been pretty obvious that in the short time together on the pitch, there's a fair bit of promise in his link up play with Aspas, they've looked decent together. Early days, but add another to that who wants to fight tooth and nail that badly, and they could potentially be a fucking nightmare for anyone to shape up against. Brings a whole new meaning to defending from the front.

Indeed. IF we can sign a couple of lads such as this Costa fella there is no reason we cant be a very dangerous proposition for the opposition. I should have said IF we sign a couple of players like this AND keep a hold of Suarez.

I really hope we don't bottle it and sell to buy...

The fact he scored that many goals in La Liga gives me hope.... I'd probably say the quality of defending in La Liga is slightly higher than the Premiership, so you would hope he might be able to force 20 goals per season.....

I think its the other way round

The fact we are actually being linked with an attacking player that's taller than 1.80 cm bodes well imo. I get that we want to play a fast-paced, passing game with loads of movement and interaction between the front players, I really like that too, but sometimes it would actually be nice to win an attacking header without having to rely on one of our two central defenders.

I would certainly hope so.

In seriousness though, Borini, Sturridge, and Suarez are all taller than that figure

If we get him, teams are really going to hate playing us. For me, too many of our midfield and defence are insipid. It's good to see us bringing more bastards into the side.

Yeah but the problem is that our midfield is still insipid. You can't imagine any team being scared to face allen, Lucas or hendo.

If we sign him, I'll be putting some decent money on him getting sent off at OT or Goodison.

I hate this. First Soldado, now this lad. I thought I liked Rodgers' taste in attackers, now I see I was wrong. I really have no idea what he is thinking, blowing all of our transfer money on an unpolished, technically average player whose only real talent is diving and ridiculous wind ups.

I may be proven wrong over time, but this is one signing I would be firmly against, especially at this price. I can't even understand Rodgers' logic here, how he can have players with real God-goven footballing talent like Eriksen, Dzagoev, Honda, Muriel all available for much less and he goes and opens the checkbook for this guy. Maybe he wants more fight in the team - fine, then buy Papadopulos or some real hard-balled defensive mid. But in attack we need more talent, not more diving and controversy. I was excited about this transfer window, but now I fear we'll be taking a step back rather than forward this year.

Rui Costa was my favorite player as a kid.... This guy better live up to that name....

No chance. Rui Costa was a poet on the pitch, one of the most intelligent midfielders of the 2000s. Diego Costa is a Brazilian Kevin Davis.

And, @Ryan, he is nothing like Rooney. Rooney is not just hard work and blue collar mentality, first and foremost he is a world-class football talent. Diego Costa has no comparable talent, not even close. And unlike Rooney, he is more of a target man who uses his strong frame (and a large arsenal of dirty tricks) to receive the first pass and lay off the ball to his teammates (it's true however he is more mobile than most target men we're used to seeing in the Premiership).

I am really taken by surprise by this sudden development of Rodgers chasing overpriced Spanish league target men, with big bids for 28-year old Soldado and now Costa. Why was he so desperate to get rid of Andy Carroll then? Why didn't he try to get Mario Gomes, a proven 25+ goals per season striker, who ended up at Fiorentina for only £17M 14M+add-ons (as a comparison, Costa's best ever league goal return in a season is 10)? Or why not Llorente, a much better finisher and overall player who ended up at Juve for free? Why not Miro Klose? Fuck, if I knew that we are ready to splash £20M+ on Diego Costa, I would have said we should go all out for David Villa, even if he is 45 and on insane wages. At least he can play. And score.

I also didn't think playing with a target man is really what Rodgers' system was about. Barca does't have one, Swansea didn't play with one either. It seemed that with Suarez, Sturridge and Coutinho we had the makings of a fluid, mobile and creative front 4 and he just needed to find one final piece to replace Downing. Mkhitaryan would have fit the mould perfectly, shame it didn't happen (and I am still not convinced it was Mkhitaryan's choice to snub us), but there are still other players in a similar mould available, you all know the names - Eriksen, Dzagoev, Honda. If he wanted a top class right wing-forward, Di Maria is available. It's simply baffling to me that instead of pursuing one of them, Rodgers suddenly switched his priorities and started flinging big money at workhorse target men. And that after dealing with various Suarez controversies all season, he wants to bring into the club an even bigger scandalist, diver and cheater, but one without the redeeming quality of a world-class footballing talent. I'm sorry if I spoiled someone's mood, but this is just absurd to me.

well "absurd" is what liverpool fc have done well for the last few years .

It's a tactic.... Bring in this twat so Suarez looks like a saint.

We can then sell him for Bale kind of money...

I have no idea what he's like, but if we sell Suarez and end up only with this lad, I reckon we'll be in bit of a shithole this season.

Hunter and Karlsen seem to think he'll fit in perfectly with us and the Premiership.
From what I've seen Costa isnt your average target man like Carroll/Davies either.

Can play on either wing and upfront and will add what our squad is lacking according to them.

Rurik is wrong from the start Rooney is NOT world class, he has shown glimpses of world class talent but never on a sustained basis. Rooney has to be one of the most overhyped players of all time. He is a very good player but not world class, never has been never will be. For me there are only 2 world class forward players - Messi and Ronaldo, the rest (Suarez, Ibra, Falcao etc) are all great players but just a rung below the 2 world class players.

Rooney is in the tier below the great forwards, the very good class.
