I thought that Ayala showed real potential when he played last season and can only improve. If any of the centre halves is shown the door, it's definately going to be Zorba.

I'm surprised by the length of Wilson's contract. Only 3 years for a prodigy unless the plan is to have a decent look at him for 18 months then offer him an upgrade?
I think its sensible.

He might not end up any good for starters. At 18 its not so easy to tell.

He might only have asked for 3 years. We hardly have the best record for bringing young players through. He might want to see how it goes.

Also, I doubt we will be paying him top wages between the ages of 18 and 21. He might want a guaranteed time in the not-to-distant future when he knows he can re-negotiate

Given our strength in depth with centre-backs I'd be tempted to sell Skrtel for 10m and spend elsewhere (left-back, more towards a top striker).

We'd still have the Greek, Wilson, Kelly, Ayala as back-up to Carra and Agger.

There are still doubts over Agger's fitness this season and many believe that Carra, at 32, probably won't be playing every game.

Say that Agger gets injured again. Would you want one of Ayala, Wilson or Kelly (with less than 10 Premiership games between them) stepping in full time, or the good in the air but slow and old Greek partnering Carra?

Selling Skrtel would be quite short-sighted IMO.

The Greek (who seems to be gaining importance beyond his entitlement throughout this thread!) will no doubt be gone next year anyway. Carra could well be slowing down by then too.
If we sell Skrtel now (who we know is a good player) we are banking on at least 2 of Ayala, Wilson or Kelly being able to be first team regulars within the next year or so, and if they don't we might be faced with having to buy another defender next summer

Get rid of The Greek while we can still get something for him

I find this contempt for Kyrgiakos very difficult to understand. He was signed as an emergency measure and did a great job for us. I don't remember him having a bad game.

Yet people won't even afford him the courtesy of calling him by his proper name. Why does he have the be "The Greek," "Spartan" or "Zorba?" Do we have some kind of prejudice against Greeks?

:🙂

We'll miss the Greek when he is gone. He created a cult hero status during his limited time here.

I couldn't be bothered to spell his name correctly.

I have nothing against him but as you say he was an emergency short term measure. We don't necessarily have that emergency now so no need to keep him, and if we can get some money for him then we should.

He'll be able to leave for free next year won't he? Would you sign a player we don't especially need for 2 million pounds (which we won't get back) just because you quite like him?

I'm not against selling him if it is decided that there are better options for our centre-back pair.

It's just that I don't like the apparent contempt in which he is held around here.

The guy stepped up to the plate when we needed him.
I think you've completely misunderstood the whole situation P.
Calling him 'The Greek' is a term of affection. Personally I love the fucker. Proper cult hero status.
The Greek is a respectful nickname. There are 24 million Greeks but only one 'The Greek'.
Exactly. It's a proper emotional term. He is THE Greek.

Zorba as our best CB last season is abouty as useful, interesting and relevant as fucking Lucarse being our 'third best player' or whatever the fuck the useless cunt was.

See Portly. That's how you use a nickname offensively. 'The Greek' really is an affectionate term for most.

Yeah, there has been no contempt.

They're just harmless nicknames.
Yup, actually I think getting nicknames indicates the player's decent at least.

If they're shit they're just called 'shit', or 'cunt'..or Lucarse.

Charlie Adam can see a bright future for Scotland – and it can start with some Northern Lights in Aberdeen tonight.

Blackpool’s playmaker has watched many of his countrymen sparkle down south this season, and is delighted a handful of them will get the chance to transfer this promise to the international stage against the Faroe Islands.

Losing an entire team to injuries has opened the door to many youngsters who hope to be future stars for their country, and the former Rangers midfielder is as excited as any of them at the prospect of fresh blood being allowed to flow at Pittodrie.

Adam said: “The manager has brought in new players. It’s good to see the lads who have done well with the Under-21 side getting the opportunity. It will be good to see the lads show they can step up to the mark and that they deserve to be in it. The manager has seen a lot of games, and he thinks they are good enough.

“There is plenty of talent –they just need the opportunity. I saw Barry Bannan playing for Aston Villa and he has been sensational. I saw it when he was on loan at Blackpool where he was different class.

“David Goodwillie has scored a lot of goals in the SPL, and he is still a young boy. Danny Wilson got his move to Liverpool in the summer. He’s probably not played as much as he would like, but he is still a top, top player.

“He cruised it at Rangers. I’ve watched him since he was a young lad. Liverpool is a massive club, but he will learn from them and become a better player.
So the future is god.â€

Somebody tell the BBC who he plays for now. In the sports bit of their TV morning news today some bint called him a Rangers player.

The verdict was simple and heartfelt as Danny Wilson, a player who deals in millions in transfer fees and wages, reflected on his Scotland debut almost with a wide-eyed innocence.

“I’m living the dream right now and I’m pinching myself every other week,†said the 18-year-old after marking his debut with a goal, volleying home a Charlie Adam corner in the 3-0 defeat of the Faroe Islands.

“It was an incredible night for me. It couldn’t have gone any better for me,†said the centre-back who signed for Liverpool in the summer from Rangers in a fee believed to be in the region of £2m but which could rise to £5m.

“I didn’t even expect to start let alone score a goal on my debut,†he said. “It was beyond my wildest dreams.â€

Wilson, who is the eighth youngest scorer in Scottish international history, was eager to recall his first strike in what could be a long Scotland career.

“I remember the goal clearly, it’s not something I’m likely to forget,†he said. “I went to the back post, just managed to shake off my marker and I got the ball into the net. It was my right foot, too, not my strongest.â€

His solid defensive display was also complemented by an assist for the third goal. Wilson’s night was made extra special because the presence of his family who travelled to the game and were part of a crowd of more than 10,000.

“I’ve played in the Champions League, moved to Liverpool but this is right up there with anything I’ve done in football,†he said.

“It’s pretty special and something I will always look back on with pride. But it’s only the first step for me and there is lots more I want to achieve in the game.â€

Wilson was part of an inexperienced team as Craig Levein blooded a clutch of youngsters. However, the centre-back insisted: “We had an inexperienced team in the sense we were lacking in caps. But we weren’t lacking in quality. We had a lot of quality in the team,†he said.

Of his immediate future, he said: “I will need to take my time and be patient. I knew it would be tough going down to Liverpool. I knew I wouldn’t walk into the team. But it’s a learning process.â€

Wilson has only played once for Liverpool, in the embarrassing defeat to Northampton Town in the Carling Cup, but he said: “There are some great plaers at the club and my chance will come. I just need to make sure I take it when it comes.â€

Its a nice gesture by the Beebs. There might have been some of his relatives watching, and they didnt want to embarrass the young lad.

I don't know if it has been said before, but Binny is the most useful forummer here by a country mile.

Not only does he post relevant articles in several different threads, he also highlights the important bits for lazy guys like me to skim through and comment in an all-knowing manner after that.

I'd like to see him start getting some first team action.

Our problem is that we have a manager who is desperate and so is increasingly unlikely to risk blooding players like Wilson, Pacheco and to an extent, Kelly.

Its been blindingly obvious that Kelly should be regularly starting at RB, yet he moves out best CB there to 'compensate'

I'm not sure what Binny's best position is though. 😉

Agree otherwise. Good oost.
