so four center backs (if the greek does indeed leave)
carra and agger as first choice, skrtel on the bench and wilson eased in as carra is phased out.
I actually think Carra might be 3rd choice this year... controversial!?
Hodgson would need balls of steel to drop Carra straight away.

Perhaps this purchase means that agger might be first choice cb but back up lb when needed? Meaning we have our 5 centre backs, until the lb gets injured, then we have 4 cbs and left back all covered

I think Wilson will be an under-study to Jamie this year, and suspect Carra may be used a little more sparingly to keep him as fresh as possible through the season.

Carra shouldn't be 3rd choice because he is consistently our best defender.

He is getting older of course but he was never quick anyway. Ferdinand and Carvalho are the same age. Terry and King are not much younger. They are still good, and Carra is injured less than them. Shame our younger defenders aren't so reliable.

Also, remember Sami Hyypia was roughly Carra's age when we won the CL. Should he have been phased out?

This season is going to be hard enough without losing our best players through choice! Carra is still one of them

Wilson + Cole = Purslow signings??

He seems to be quicker than Ronald that's for sure!
Yeah its strange for a guy who is secretly trying to destroy the club, perhaps he is trying to lull us into a false sense of security by being far more effective than his predecessor

Carra should have been rested more last season, but we could not afford to because of injuries. For the last couple of years he, more than anyone has shown signs of real fatigue towards the end of the season.
It's not phasing him out, its being sensible with him, for his good, and the teams

Well we'll find out - we just shouldn't expect immediate things from an 18 year old.
Who'd only played in Scotland!

I think it would be beneficial for Carra to sit out every 1 in 4/5 games this season, especially if we progress well in all comps. Glad to see Wilson sign, I think he's the first 'starlet' we've signed in a long time that will actually live up to the hype (eventually).

I'm not sure any 'starlets' we've signed have ever done very well when its come to it. Normally they don't even play.

Any chance of Arda Turan signing next? 😛
Doubt it - we've now got Cole, Jovanovic, Kuyt, Maxi and Babel on the wings
nice ... Some really good footballers there, if a bit slow, will some fucker PLEASE get a good striker in!

Left Back + Striker .. next please 🙂
Then a DM if Mascherano is leaving

this could be a great window. 2 good signings soo far. Add figueroa + remy and we have done really well

Is this any good for the future though? He's a left-footed centre back and unless he can play left-back, I don't see how he's going to get into the first team. He certainly can't play alongside Agger. Two centre-backs without much aerial presence don't bode well. Neither does a partnership of two left-footed centre backs.

He IS for the future.

Plenty of teams have two right footed CBs ...... there's not much wrong with two left footed ones.

That should work in theory. I've never seen a partnership of two left-footed centre backs though. Ever.

And I ask whether he is for the future because if Agger remains at the club, the left centre-back position is his and I don't see Wilson dislodging him. I'd have been happier if we'd gone after someone like Cahill or Shawcross as a future replacement for Carra.

Perhaps Wilson can play left-back though, in the Maldini mould? Has anyone seen him play? Is he quick enough to be a full-back?

I've seen him play. He's not a FB. I suppose he could fill in if required, but that's about it.

He'll get some games this season, and according to some Rangers fans can play full back aswell.

Fantastic talent that we have done ever so well to sign, great signing.

Cahill and Shawcross would have cost a fuck of a lot more than £2m though. Given Agger's injury record, maybe Wilson is HIS understudy/future replacement, rather than Carra's?

Is this lad not that good in the air then?

More of a ball-carrier is he?
He doesn't look like a big 'Hyypia' type, more like a Carra build.

Possibly. Doesn't make too much sense as I thought the Greek was adequate back-up to Agger. Getting a replacement for Carra will become a priority very soon and I don't think Wilson is it.

Replacement for the Greek, definitely. And a threat for a first team place.

When do 18 year old CBs play in the premiership?

Rio?

If you're amongst the best in the position, you should play.

how old was rio when he was first choice for west ham?

He's 1.87 m at 18 years old. He's a good header of the ball and won't have any problem with that aspect of the game.

Rio is that rare exception. It's a tough one, with Kyrgiakos, we had someone a little too slow, a little too old.

Hopefully Agger can stay relatively injury free. Wilson will, in all likelihood, not factor significantly for some time.

if wilson is indeed half decent then he'll get his chance in the carlin cup, I can't see him being risked in the fac or europa and I don't think he'll get any games in the league this season.

Why? Because thats how Rafa did things?

If he's half as good as he's cracked up to be (I've only seen him twice but I was impressed) then he will be given chances, let's wait and see.
