Replacement for the Greek, definitely. And a threat for a first team place.

When do 18 year old CBs play in the premiership?
Rio?

If you're amongst the best in the position, you should play.
Rio is that rare exception. It's a tough one, with Kyrgiakos, we had someone a little too slow, a little too old.

Hopefully Agger can stay relatively injury free. Wilson will, in all likelihood, not factor significantly for some time.

Listen Senor Fark, I have no issues with what you've written. However, if Wilson shows himself to be 'that' good (and I don't think he's there yet), then he should factor in with time. If not, then not.

He's a good talent though - so hopefully Cup games and a league game here, or there.

the reason why I say I don't think he'll get much game time is I think skrtel is ahead of him in pecking order, as is the greek (if he stays) so in fac games or europe if roy wants to rest carra he will just pick one of those two before he gets to wilson.

In the last couple years we've seen guys like Ayala, Paletta and Hobbs have get a rare game in the league. If this guy is meant to be a cut above - which he better had be for the money we're paying - it's not unreasonable to expect him to get a couple of games. Hopefully we have better luck with injuries this year, but with Agger and Skrtel you never know.

What pecking order though? Rafa's? Hodgson could come in and have a totally different outlook about who are the priority centre backs and which makes the best pairing.

I don't know how good this fella is but if we are ditching the greek then chances are we will need him at some point.

He's not just come from the youth team, he has played at a decent level, and i didn't think we were in a financial position to be buying players without at least including them as a squad back up.

true enough, I guess but if the CB pairing isn't agger and carra with skrtel on the bench v arsenal, I'll be very surprised.

From what I've seen of the lad, playing style wise he's a clone of Agger. Possesses a cultured left foot, likes to play the ball out of defence and also the raking long diagonal ball. Hopefully he'll get games to aid his progress, looks a talent already.

Its not carra's pace that's a problem, but he's becoming more erratic. Hopefully the odd rest will help cos he looked out on his feet at times last year.

Considering how much Chris Smalling cost, 2m +3m add ons is not a bad deal for someone 2 yrs younger.

Presumably Martin Kelly will be our 4th choice CB, if the Greek goes? That would put Wilson as 5th choice. Obviously there's a chance Kelly will be used to cover RB and possibly LB as well (depending who comes and who goes in those positions) but given the age difference, I'd expect him to be ahead of this kid in the pecking order. Unless Wilson really is a prodigy...

Its not like United have been ripped off for a youngster before!

3 year deal is good. He's 18 right? He doesn't have to be part of the 25 man squad, and if he doesn't turn out to be good we can release him when he's 21.

I think Ayala looks a good centre back, and he's a big lad too. So Ayala (if he doesn't go on loan) and Wilson as cover for centre back, the Greek sadly leaves and Kelly as cover for right back.

Ayala had a good game on Wednesday evening against Grasshoppers. 🙂

Very good game Sir, very good game.

Spartan can't leave.

He's the only defender who can head a football, and it turned out last season that this was quite important.

I'm sure I would agree if I knew who Spartan was.

Haha!

It's Kyrgiakos, Mr Portly.

Ah, thank you DHSC! In that case, I definitely do agree. Kyrgiakos turned out to be a great signing and saved our defensive bacon many times last season. 🙂

I would prefer to keep Skrtel. Last season he had the occasional dodgy game, but I put that down to the learning process. Usually he is sound.

For those that have seen Danny play, is he better than Kelly right now?

I think Kelly is a good enough 4th CB, but many seem to suggest Danny Wilson will be above him in the pecking order.
We can't keep them all! No club needs seven CBs.
Exactly.

But I believe that Agger, Carra, Kelly and maybe Wilson(?) can also fill in in other positions in an emergency.

Carra is still our best defender, but we have to assume that he won't go on for that many more seasons.

Agger and Skrtel are still young, still have a few years on their contracts and are both decent defenders. Kelly and Wilson are both promising by all accounts but inexperienced.

If we keep Carra, Skrtel, Agger, Wilson and Kelly we should always be able to be able to select strong defenders, at least 3 of them can also provide cover at full back in an emergency, and if and when Carra moves on, with a bit of luck we might not need to buy expensive replacements.

I don't see much of a case for getting rid of, say, Skrtel, keeping The Greek and then possibly having to go out spending more on centre backs next summer.

I thought that Ayala showed real potential when he played last season and can only improve. If any of the centre halves is shown the door, it's definately going to be Zorba.

I'm surprised by the length of Wilson's contract. Only 3 years for a prodigy unless the plan is to have a decent look at him for 18 months then offer him an upgrade?
