I'd like to see him start getting some first team action.

Our problem is that we have a manager who is desperate and so is increasingly unlikely to risk blooding players like Wilson, Pacheco and to an extent, Kelly.

Its been blindingly obvious that Kelly should be regularly starting at RB, yet he moves out best CB there to 'compensate'

He played 3 times last year.

He's played 10 games this year under Hodgson.

Danny Wilson has been handed his first real chance to break into the Liverpool first team, with Rangers hoping that he can capitalise on an opening created by Jamie Carragher’s shoulder injury.

Carragher, who sustained a dislocation against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, will be out for three months and yesterday Wilson was immediately promoted to the side to start against Steaua Bucharest in the Europa League tomorrow evening.

Although he earned his first senior Scotland cap in the 3-0 victory over the Faroe Islands last month, the only Liverpool game he has appeared in was their penalty shoot-out defeat to Northampton Town in the Carling Cup.

Rangers’ interest in Wilson is more than just the normal goodwill towards a product of their youth development system. He left for £2m in July but there are substantial “add-on†payments with financial rewards for the Ibrox club if and when he starts his first Barclays Premier League game and again when he reaches 10, 20 and subsequent appearance triggers.

Roy Hogdson, the Liverpool manager, spoke with the 19-year-old before the Faroes match and told him he had been impressed with his work and attitude since moving south in the summer. Hogdson is known generally to prefer experience over youth, which may mean Wilson has longer to wait than would be the case at other clubs, but so far there have been no discussions about sending him out on loan when the transfer window opens in January. The long-term absence of Carragher has moved him up the pecking order. Martin Skrtel and the former Rangers defender Sotirios Kyrgiakos are their other available, senior centre-halves. Daniel Agger is out with a calf injury.

C'mon Roy , give Danny a chance.

Did I mention I was out with him and his girlfriend the other night 😛

CELTIC are eyeing a stunning bid to snap up former Rangers kid Danny Wilson on loan.

Record Sport has learned Parkhead boss Neil Lennon made what is being described as a "tentative" Inquiry about a possible deal to bring Wilson back to Glasgow from Liverpool for the rest of the season.

This coincided with the youngster - who left Ibrox in August for an initial fee of £2million - having a heart-to-heart with Reds boss Kenny Dalglish yesterday.

It's understood Dalglish told the Scotland new boy he is part of his plans for the rest of the season and the club would be reluctant to let him go.

The 19-year-old has made only three top-team appearances since moving and has been struggling just to hold down a place on the bench since Dalglish took over from Roy Hodgson.

This prompted Wilson to ask to be allowed to leave on loan - and Lennon has made it clear he would be at the front of the queue if the answer is yes.

A Celtic source said: "Neil has made a tentative enquiry about getting Danny because he is desperately trying to find some quality defensive cover before the transfer window shuts.

"We suspect at this stage Kenny will want to keep him for the club's Europa League campaign but Neil has not given up hope of bringing him in."

Lennon is desperately searching for central defensive options following Saturday's hamstring injury to Swedish stopper Daniel Majstorovic. After a scan yesterday Celtic confirmed the Swede will miss the next three weeks.

The Parkhead boss had hoped to fast track Kelvin Wilson's arrival from Nottingham Forest but has been told it will cost as much as £600,000 to secure him now rather than land him on a free transfer in the summer.

And Forest boss Billy Davies has hit out at Lennon for revealing he wanted the City Ground ace on board this month.

Davies said: "I think Celtic have done a lot of talking in the press. Losing Wilson and having to then replace him, with all the disruption that would entail? For me, it is a no-brainer."

It would be a strange one for him to go there on loan but hes not getting games right now and young players need to build experience more than anything else, I wouldnt be against it provided we had the right to recall him if he was needed. I think alot of our fringe players would benefit from first team games in the lower league or the SPL

We should've loaned him out at the start of the season. He was never going to get many games here.

That's something Utd do quite well with their youngsters - get them good loan deals at decent clubs.

Not if they are good enough mate.

Look at Kelly for instance.

He seems to have been the exception to the rule though, or rather shows that every other youth player in recent years has been pretty shit

the loan worked out well for Kelly, so much for spider's kiss of death

every footballer is different, there are always exceptions. it's just very hard to break through regardless unless you're super talented and there aren't many who are

There are no hard or fast rules to developing elite footballers, so throwing around such assumptions is pointless.

DANNY WILSON insists he would have been STUPID to join Celtic on loan last month.

The former Rangers kid, who moved to Liverpool for 2million in the summer, was wanted by Hoops manager Neil Lennon when he faced a defensive crisis.

Celtic spoke to the Reds about taking Wilson on loan but the bid was rejected by gaffer Kenny Dalglish, who was instrumental in taking the 19-year-old to Merseyside.

Now the defender has spoken for the first time about why moving to Celtic was NEVER an option.

He said: "My reaction when I heard Celtic had asked about a loan was like everyone else's. It's just stupid, isn't it?

"After being associated with Rangers for so long - I was there from age nine - it was never on the cards.

"I have no interest in going to Celtic. Would I have gone to another club on loan? Maybe.

"But after speaking to the manager he doesn't really want me to go anywhere. That was good to hear
."

Wilson is enjoying life under legend Dalglish, who replaced Roy Hodgson in January. He's now determined to show he's worthy of a place in the starting line-up after playing just three times for the top team this term.

He said: "Kenny is a huge figure at Liverpool. He got instant respect as soon as he walked in the door.

"He's happy with how I've been performing in training. If an opportunity arises he won't hesitate to put me in."

Wilson won his second Scotland cap in midweek against Northern Ireland. And Craig Levein has admitted he expects Wilson and teenage Blackburn star Grant Hanley to be his future defensive pairing.

That's music to Wilson's ears as he played alongside Hanley at Murray Park.

He said: "It gave me great encouragement to hear Craig say that about us.

"I played with Grant when we were nine at Rangers. We were defenders even as kids.
"

Anfield No.2 Steve Clarke is pleased to see Wilson getting a chance with Scotland and believes it will help his Liverpool career.

Clarke said: "It's a fantastic honour to get picked by your country. That's Danny's reward for all his hard work."

DANNY WILSON took a leap of faith by leaving Rangers' first team to join a queue at Liverpool.

But Kenny Dalglish has no doubts the Scotland teenager will be right at the front of it before the season's out.

The 19-year-old has managed only three starts since his £2million switch to Anf ield last summer - one in the Carling Cup and two in the Europa League.

And with Jamie Carragher, Dan Agger, Martin Skrtel and Soti Kyrgiakos all battling for the same spots, the central defender has a tough job ahead of him if he wants to land a starting slot.

Dalglish admitted: "We're strong in that department because they're all back now.

"The first opportunity we get, though, he's in.

"The difficulty is he's had three managers.

"He was seen under Rafa Benitez, he eventually signed for Roy Hodgson, and then I've come in.
At 19, that's a hell of a hit, and it's to his credit that he's never missed a beat.

"It's a big leap for him to take, from playing for the first team at Rangers to coming down here and not playing.

"He's had to take the long-term view - but he's a mature boy. He wants to be involved and we try to keep him involved.

"He'll develop. We've been really pleased with him in training - he's done everything and more.

"We just have to guide him properly and pick the right games for him to play in.

"The last thing we want to do is lose someone through our bad management or bad judgment.

"If we can identify when the time's right and do it properly, then that will help him and the team.

"If we pick the wrong time, the wrong opponent and it doesn't go well, it could be harmful - and we don't want that."

Levein insists Scotland can still be successful while change is being made.

He added: "That's the challenge.

"There's the two different things - the immediacy and the long-term view - but it doesn't mean you can't do the two things.

"I think if you concentrate too much on one, to the detriment of the other, then it's a problem.

"But in this job it's a bit easier to spend time between matches looking at the long term than it would be at a club."

Levein is keen that this will be his legacy when he quits Scotland.

He added: "I'd love to be doing the Scotland job for a long time but that depends on success.

"I am desperately keen to leave some sort of legacy so that things can move forward in the future.

"Bringing younger players into the squad is key.

"The likes of Danny Wilson, Grant Hanley and Barry Bannan are kids who, in three or four years, will be important ones and guys who are speaking out about their country on a regular basis."

Hopefully Wilson's progress wont be halted/affected by the lack of playing time in his favoured central position.

He is fucking rubbish.
You've never been more wrong Oncy, the kid will become a top player.

I think it's very hard on the lad to play him out of position when he first breaks through into the first team.
He's a liability at LB, that I do know.
That is harsh. Being new to the league and playing out of position should merit a little bit more grace than this.

I would agree that he looks shakey there Squiggs, but I just think the term liability is harsh.
He is young and will learn. He can't be any worse then Insua & Konchesky!

He certainly has proved that hes not ready for our first team. His outing at West Ham was his worst display by some way. I think he gets beaten far too easily.

He's looked dreadful at LB and a long way off a first team spot for Liverpool based on his outings there.

It's a worry that he's seemingly unable to play there given that he came in with a reputation for being a bit of a footballer, but perhaps like Skrtel, who put in one of the worst defensive performances I've seen in recent times at RB, he's a CB and nothing more.

Too bad nobody has come in (or we've not released him) on loan for the final few months. With no Europa games, and with the defenders all back (*touch wood*), he could do with some minutes in the Championship.
It's not harsh at all. He's just not a LB, Stu.
He needs time but he looks worryingly nervous on the ball and his positional sense has been poor, that said, he's not a left back. In the second half against the Hammers he decided to suddenly find composure so maybe that's a promising sign, it's early days.
